just went to disneyland last week (for like the 20th time in a couple years.) one of my favorite rides was pirates. went on the new one and to tell you the truth, i wished they would have left it the way it was. Way too commercial now. Its seems like one big movie promotion. Walt Disney is turning in his grave because that ride was his personal favorite. Anyone else been on it yet?

Haven't been to Cali in about 8 years, but might be going with my family to D-land. Is a saturday a bad day to go? How long are the lines?, Is it worth it?

well, all summer long itll be busy. But the funny thing is is that i went last saturday. suprisingly it was not that busy. (at least for a saturday). the reason why was it was sooooo hot. so, with the kids complaining, the adults taking the complaints, a whole swarm of people started leaving the park. So, you can take your chances on a really hot sat. Its possible that a lot of people will not want to walk around in the heat. If you don't mind it, then your looking at an average half hour wait for each ride when usually its about an hour 20. Regardless, its always good to get a Fast Pass for the ride you really want to go on. Its helps, trust me.

I haven't been in quite a while, but that ride was a favorite of mine - How did they change it?

I went a few Mondays ago... ridiculous. California Adventure is much better during the summer because the lines are so much shorter. Get a park hopper, do the fast pass for a disneyland ride you want to go on, go to CA adventure and ride a few rides, then fastpass something at CA Adventure before you leave back to DL..

Also, take LOTS of water. Wear cool clothes. Take something that'll keep you cool. Wear lots of sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. It is ridiculously hot right now.

That said, I totally dug the new Pirates ride. I don't think Disney has seen a character as popular as Jack Sparrow in a long, long time. The few enhancements they made, especially the cleaning and the Jacks, made it a better experience for me.

SPOILER WARNING!!

-they added more houses in the beginning (bayou scene)
-different banjo song playing (not "oh susanna")
-an illusion of a waterfall appears after the second drop that shows Davey Jones Talking
-Captain Barbossa replaces the other pirate at the battle scene in the water.
-Jack sparrow makes 3 appearences. He replaces the two pirates at the end trying to haul the chest up the hill. He sings the lyrics.
-Theres no lyrics to the song until the last 5 minutes of the ride.
-improved sound throughout the ride.

My wife and kids go to Disneyland about once a month. They said that the incredibly long lines are definitely not worth the minimal changes that they made to the Pirates ride. I heard that the pirate above the boats just prior to the big drop has a different audio track.

At least it doesn't seem like they changed the entire thing. I also heard that the ride went back to the old version of having guys chasing the women during that one portion...which was switched w/ something else several years ago.

Is the ransacked village still part of the ride? How about the pirate chasing the women around in circles?

those are still on the ride. the pirate chasing the women or visa-versa, they're holding the plates of food. thats been around for about 5-6 years now because of that carpet munching women's rights lady.

The food plate thing was funny, because they swapped it for the women, but then the women were pissed that the "plus size" woman was chasing food...so it ended up being a guy chasing a "plus size" woman with food. So...the classic double standard when it comes to certain liberals.

Oh well.

We went over Thanksgiving last year; the Haunted Mansion had some updates from The Nightmare Before Christmas; I liked it with the more spooky old theme.

That's just a seasonal overlay; it goes back to the way it was after the holidays...

Yea, that was just so stupid. Kind of like Han shooting first...

You make a change that ends up making no sense at all.

Disney should have stood up to them in the first place; I mean, this is a depiction of something over 200 years in the past; things were different, deal with it. I had heard they changed this back to the way it was, but haven't been there to see it yet. I hope they did, because the whole chase change was just plain stupid. It is a reminder of the horrible management of the park by the previous regime.

Ours too, but PoC was open for a couple of days in late June, so we got to go. I agree that it now seems like a big movie commercial (although if I remember right, the part about it being Disney's favorite was false -- it was the last ride Disney worked on, but he died before it opened, so he never actually saw it). There's a technology upgrade -- better "sky", better sound, etc. There's a general refurbishment -- for example, the treasure room has more & shinier gold. The "waterfall" effect is cool. But yeah, other than that, I walked out thinking I had just ridden an advertisement.

By the way, you can still go on blockout days, for about half price of regular admission. If you do it once it's worth it, but if you go twice you might as well pay for the upgrade to the next level pass.

And another "by the way," they let you upgrade a pass to the next level of pass by paying the difference in price.

(From the "things you can do that they don't go out of their way to tell you about" files....)

yea, i see what your saying but before the movie, pirates was a ride on its own. No major billboards all over the place or any kind of heavy murchandising outside of disneyland itself. Now, it just seems like its a big movie trailer or something.
