What's next for Lakers as they struggle to win in free agency?

BY ERIC PINCUS
July 1, 2015, 3:34 p.m.
After striking out with Portland Trail Blazers free agent LaMarcus Aldridge, the Lakers will meet Clippers center DeAndre Jordan.

While Jordan may choose to change locker rooms at Staples Center, he may be more likely to re-sign with the Clippers or flee to Dallas to join the Mavericks.

The Lakers also met with Detroit Pistons forward/center Greg Monroe on Wednesday.

A single yes would use up most of the Lakers' $22 million in spending power this summer, but what happens if both say no?

The Lakers are well positioned in the backcourt with rookie D'Angelo Russell, second-year guard Jordan Clarkson and Kobe Bryant. The team also has Nick Young and Jabari Brown.

Lakers' losing continues as LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love shun them
July 1, 2015 Updated 8:03 p.m.
BY BILL ORAM / STAFF WRITER

LaMarcus Aldridge, the Lakers' top target on the free agent market, reportedly eliminated them from contention for his services on Wednesday.
TONY GUTIERREZ, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Lakers learned Wednesday just how swiftly free agency can move, and how fast optimism can dissolve into continued frustration.

Over the course of one afternoon, the Lakers watched as their top target, LaMarcus Aldridge, reportedly booted them from contention for his services, and one of their contingency options, Cleveland’s Kevin Love, decided to stay put.

It sets up a far less promising free agency period for the Lakers, who are coming off the worst season in franchise history and have won just 48 games in two years. A team of executives led by Mitch Kupchak flew to Washington, D.C., overnight Tuesday to court Detroit center Greg Monroe, then returned for a Wednesday evening tete-a-tete with Clippers center DeAndre Jordan.

We're prehistoric compared to the Spurs/Rockets/Mavs.

Also, Lin would be a horrible fit--we shouldn't want him back, and I doubt he'd have any interest in coming back.

So it is true, nobody wants to play alongside Kobe except a bunch of low tier players. Kobe was better off at home or maybe we should have asked magic to come. Like it or not we are not going to make playoffs and get mid to top players until Kobe is gone. Bye bye Kobe thanks for the championships.

Pray they sign both

Center-poor Lakers to meet with Greg Monroe, DeAndre Jordan

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
Wed, 01 Jul 2015 11:39 AM ET

In an attempt to fill a gaping hole at center, the Lakers will make pitches Wednesday to free agents Greg Monroe and DeAndre Jordan, per the Orange County Register.

Monroe, who has reportedly felt unappreciated in Detroit, averaged 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for the Pistons last season.

Jordan is a defensive specialist and premier rebounder who has struggled mightily hitting foul shots for the cross-town Clippers and boasts virtually no offensive range. He led the NBA at 15.0 rebounds per game, but shot a horrific 41.7 percent at the line.

Whether we don't sign another teams free agent center, I can only hope we resign Ed Davis & play him & T. Black 28-30 minutes a game, both players give effort & play defense which this team of youth needs. They don't need the ball & leave the offense up to the trio of Clarkson, Russell & Kobe, Randle also.

Shaggy, Kelly & Wes Johnson can go for all I care. Trade Nick & Boozer for a big if possible & Wes has shown nothing but inconsistency since he arrived. Byron needs to give the players consistent minutes in order for improvement! Lin won't start anymore & he looked very uncomfortable out there coming & going. We'll field a team of 12-14 guys but it's gonna take another year to regain some respect once again...

Questions

With LA and Jordan looking to be part of a team that is very close to winning a ring, and not being the next "Face" of the Lakers, were the odds in our favor to get either one who are not leaders - albeit very talented. Lakers are looking for the next leader, not adding another talented piece

Were they expecting LA to play center (like Pau)- with Randle, Black and Kelly playing the 4?

Since Jordan is not Shaq (on offense), teams are able to take him out of the game because of his FT woes?

Maybe Monroe (an older version of Okafor) would indeed be a better choice.

The Cousins situation appears to be very fluid

I'm thinking the Lakers feel they already have their next "leader" in DRuss and I agree with them. The guy's a natural born leader. I don't understand all the negativity. We are measurably better than we were the past 2 years and much more exciting. The reason we are failing to attract FAs has nothing to do with L.A., management, Kobe or anything else. Once we show that we have some nice pieces in place and show improvement, free agents will come. I am not concerned about that at all. The Lakers brand is still historic and legendary and that won't change anytime soon.

Agree. Rebuilding wasn't going to take overnight. A lot of delusional/over emotional responses on LG recently

Doesn't next years draft pick go to Philly?
And the 2018 pick to Orlando?

Thanks to the trading of a 50 yr PG and loosing the best centers.

The Lakers NEED to hire a FO that is forward thinking and is a team builder.

Not just wildly go after FA thinking they will sign. The Clippers are now the
premier team in LA.

The Lakers will just have to earn their way back.
