Any opinions on why the sharks have begun swimming so close to shore and biting humans? I'm inclined to say global warming.

My Sig line comes from a story about beached baby seals who have lost their food source because the warmer water has changed when their prey are in the areas where they have always been ... So they are born without a food source to feed upon.

What else is there

I don't think so. They're hunting for seals. The seal population has exploded. They've been protected for years.

The sharks are swimming where they always have. Sharks congregating in Florida is a seasonal thing. There's just coincidental spike in incidental attacks. I highly doubt that's induced by global warming.

You're discussing something different than CI. I believe he is referring to the string of attacks on the east coast. And the pinniped problem occurring at the moment is primarily with sea lions, who are much more of a populace than seals. That situation is very much a GW driven phenomenon. The bait fish they typical feed on have been driven to other areas due to changes in water temperatures.

As for the Southern California shark situation, the sharks that are being seen off of the beaches are juvenile great whites who are hunting for small fish. It's a behavior that has always gone on. The whites we have in this part of the state are too small to be hunting big prey like sea lions. The great whites that target sea lions and seals are larger adult sharks who typically patrol from Point Conception North, though they have occasional been known to feed off of the Channel Islands, but again, mostly the northern collection of islands like San Miguel and Santa Rosa etc.

Would overfishing cause them to look for food closer to shore?

In Mexico, the Cartel dumps bodies into the ocean and the carcasses are disposed of by sharks. The bloody, rotting corpses attract the predators from miles away and this has given them a taste for human flesh.

** This is all according to some Shark Week special my kids were watching last year. Sounded legit, but also sounded like some scare tactic BS. Discovery isn't exactly credible these days.
