I've been looking to replace my broken t2i, hopefully staying under $1000 pre-tax and more bang for the buck. Still have the original 18-55mm lens that came with but I'm wondering if a 55-200mm may be better for sporting events. Some of the ones that I've been looking at are the t5i, t6i, d3300, d5300.

As a Nikon guy, I advise you to go Nikon. I still have my D90 that I purchased a few years ago with a bunch of lenses.

IIRC, anything under the D7200 doesn't have the autofocus motor in the body, so you can't autofocus with older Nikon lenses. And you also don't get the LCD on top of the body. So I recommend going with the D7200 (or even the D7100, if you can find it in a good condition, considering the improvements from 7100 to 7200 were not significant), which is more expensive than the D5300, but it's worth it.

55-200mm would be good for sporting events, but keep in mind that the aperture can be very small closer to 200mm, so you need a lot of light (or increase the ISO) to capture good shots.

With a new 7200, you'll get an 18-105mm (iirc), which is a pretty good all around lens. I still use it, even though it was a kit lens that came with my D90.

Haha, I've usually been more partial to Canon's since I can get a relative's employee discount and I'd only have to get one more lens if I do get a 55-200mm upgrade.

I'd imagine the autofocus motor issue is negated with the 18-140mm+55-250mm lens that some D5300 bundles come with.

With the D7200, I think they're now 18-140mm also. B&H has a sale combo with 16GB SD card, backpack, and extra battery for $1496 and no tax. A shade more than I'm hoping to pay for even with the goodies. I did see several refurbished ones (manufacturer and third party) for much cheaper (one including a 75-300 with the standard, another with just a 18-300mm). Are those any reliable?

The af issue won't come up unless you purchase so-called AF-D lenses. They're considered old technology, but Nikon still makes a few models. When you see "AF-S," then the motor is inside the lens itself, which describes the lenses you listed.

Having that large range covered with a couple kit lenses is a good start. Later on, you can purchase more specialized prime lenses, which, over time, you'll use more and more, such as the 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, and 85mm 1.8. None of them are too expensive, but they deliver great image quality.

If you can find a good deal for a refurbished model from B&H, I'd purchase it. Should have no issues with it.

Quick update. Got the D7200 18-140mm kit with a used NIKKOR 70-300mm (FX version) for $1.7k, boatlload of accessories, and no tax. They certainly undersold the FX lens because even though they rated it a 3/10 grade, it's in pristine working condition. Works like a dream so far.

Sorry to bump this but does anyone know if you are allowed to bring DSLR's into Staples for Kings/Lakers games?

From the Staples Center list of prohibited items:

Quote:
Go Pro cameras, monopods, tripods, selfie sticks, and cameras with telephoto or interchangeable lenses (professional photography equipment) are not permitted inside STAPLES Center at any time.

Staples No Go List

Technically, the Rose Bowl and other sporting sites have banned them and I've been able to bring them in this year. Does anyone have any experience with this?
