LA Lakers free agency news 2015: Trade for Pacers' Roy Hibbert looms

Forward Brandon Bass and guard Lou Williams are acquired from free agent market

The Los Angeles Lakers' quest for a big man is coming to an end as they are nearing a trade deal with the Indiana Pacers to acquire two-time All-Star center Roy Hibbert.

The Lakers failed in their free agency campaign to lure in big men LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan, Greg Monroe and Brook Lopez, but the addition of Hibbert will be a notable move for the franchise.

According to ESPN, the deal might get accomplished after July 9, when the NBA lifts a league-wide moratorium on roster business.

The trade deal will make Los Angeles absorb Hibbert's $15.5-million salary for next season, ESPN quoted a source as saying. According to reports, Indiana Pacers president Larry Bird wanted Hibbert traded so his team could play at a faster pace next season.

The Pacers already acquired guard Monta Ellis to fulfil Bird's plan. Last season, Hibbert, 28, played in 76 regular season games for the Pacers who missed the playoffs after four consecutive postseason appearances.

The veteran center averaged 10.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.6 blocks per game last season. Hibbert will definitely be a presence in the paint for the Lakers and is no doubt still one of the best rim defenders in the league.

A look back at Roy Hibbert's career with the Pacers
ROY HIBBERT'S CAREER WITH THE PACERS
The Pacers reached agreement with the Lakers on Saturday to send Roy Hibbert to Los Angeles. Here's a look at Hibbert's up-and-down seven-year tenure in Indiana.
PROMISING START

The Pacers acquired Hibbert, selected 17th overall out of Georgetown, in a trade with the Raptors in 2008 that sent Jermaine O'Neal to Toronto. Though a useful reserve for Toronto and Miami over the next two seasons, O'Neal was no longer an All-Star and Hibbert provided the Pacers with a young building block.

Hibbert was effective as a rookie and became a full-time starter during the 2009-10 season, averaging 11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 25.1 minutes.

Frank Vogel took over as head coach during the 2010-11 season and Hibbert's ascension to becoming the best rim protector in the league began.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Car Crash at UCLA
... Wearing Lakers Jersey

7/7/2015 7:03 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is having a rough year ... the NBA legend got into a car wreck at UCLA yesterday ... and TMZ Sports has the pics.
Kareem was arriving to UCLA Medical Center, where he underwent quadruple bypass surgery earlier this year, when he got into a collision with another vehicle.
Sources connected to the Hall of Famer tell us he's doing OK -- no major injuries -- and it appeared the other person in the wreck was also fine.
People recognized Kareem at the scene ... not just because he's huge, but also because he was wearing his old Lakers jersey at the time of the crash.
Cops showed up ... but we're told there were no major issues, just your usual fender bender.

Lakers Player Profile: Roy Hibbert
by Hannah Kulik 20m ago

The Lakers endured resounding criticism this past week for their failed efforts to sign LaMarcus Aldridge, which was ironic since the team had very little chance of signing him all along. They had a huge void at the center position, and while they were waiting for Aldridge to make a decision, the top free agent prospects all signed elsewhere including their very own Ed Davis who had said he wanted to return. Those who were so quick to bury the Lakers, however, forgot that the offseason was not over and important moves were still possible as the Lakers were one of the only teams left with available cap space. When all seemed lost, or so the so-called experts proclaimed, the Lakers pulled off some welcomed moves in acquiring Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams and Brandon Bass, and they did it without giving up any significant assets to make it happen.

D'Angelo Russell impresses new Lakers teammates in first summer league practice
July 6, 2015 Updated 8:37 p.m.
BY BILL ORAM / STAFF WRITER

It took just one practice for Lakers' first-round draft pick D'Angelo Russell to impress his new teammates with his passing ability.
JAE C. HONG, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
EL SEGUNDO – With just 14 minutes of official NBA action under his belt, Julius Randle still has more experience than most players on the Lakers’ summer roster.

But that doesn’t mean he was ready for D’Angelo Russell.

More to the point, he wasn’t ready for Russell’s famous passes, which the No. 2 pick in the draft was already making Monday during the Lakers' first practice before they head to the Las Vegas Summer League later this week.

“I can catch them,” Randle said, describing himself as "surprised" by Russell. "But it’s just having that point guard that’s hitting you right on time.”

WHAT LOU WILLIAMS BRINGS TO THE LAKERS AND HIGHLIGHTS
July 07, 2015by Lakers Facts

Lou (Louis) Williams is coming to the Lakers. Williams has agreed to sign a three-year, $21 million contact with the Lakers and that is a bit a good news for Lakers fans. While he might not be the best free agent on the market, he is the Sixth Man of the Year and can bring in a spark off the bench.

With Nick Young's future uncertain, Williams is a solid pick up. What I like about having Williams on the team is this. If he is on the court at the same time as Kobe Bryant, then he can play the two and Kobe can drop down and play the three. In this part of Kobe's career it would probably be beneficial to play the three as often as possible. Kobe's footwork is still some of the best in the game and with his size he will cause some mis-matches down low.

Lou Williams on defending Sixth Man award: 'I look forward to it'
FOX Sports

JUL 07, 2015 2:33p ET

Move over, Nick Young (maybe literally). There's a new volume scorer coming off of the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers, and he has the award hardware to back him up.
With Lou Williams on his way to Los Angeles, the whispers about Young's future with the Lakers are growing louder. But that's neither here nor there for Williams; he's been hired as a Laker to get buckets, and that's what he's going to do. He's also the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, and Williams told Basketball Insiders' Alex Kennedy that he's looking forward to defending his title:
"Absolutely. I look forward to it. That’s become something that is part of my career and it’s a role that I’ve learned to love over the years. If you’re going to be a Sixth Man, if you’re going to come off of the bench, you want to be the best one to do it."

Lakers Free Agency: Learning to love the Lakers' offseason moves
By Tom Fehr  @TJFsports on Jul 7, 2015, 6:00a 108
Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports
Coming around on the moves the Lakers have made this offseason for Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams, and Brandon Bass.

The Los Angeles Lakers had me worried in the early days of free agency. They missed out on the big fish, with LaMarcus Aldridge going to the Spurs, and DeAndre Jordan going to the Maverickss, though that was to be expected. From the sounds of things, their meeting with Aldridge was just short of disastrous, featuring a presentation that focused little on basketball, and left Aldridge reportedly very unimpressed.

But the disappointment didn't stop there. Realistic Lakers targets fell off the board left and right, with Robin Lopez going to the Knicks, Brandan Wright going to the Grizzlies, Kosta Koufos going to the Kings, and Tobias Harris re-signing with the Magic without signing an offer sheet with another team.

Williams believes he can ease Kobe’s workload

Lou Williams (centre) in action for Atlanta Hawks. (TNS)

By Mark Medina/Daily News, Los Angeles (TNS)

Father Time punched Kobe Bryant hard enough to end his season prematurely for three consecutive years. That made the Lakers determined to find antibiotics for their star player.
The prescription entailed a full recovery, an upgraded roster and reduced playing time.
Though they expect Bryant to fully heal his surgically repaired right shoulder once training camp starts in late September, the Lakers whiffed in free agency on LaMarcus Aldridge, and DeAndre Jordan. Still, the Lakers collected a decent consolation prize in Lou Williams, the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year who could ease Bryant’s workload because they both share the same position and love for scoring.

Lakers Free Agency 2015: LA Lakers Continuing Climb Back To The Top With Latest Moves
by Keith Rivas 2h ago

Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams, and Brandon Bass are all coming to town with one thing on their mind — winning that ever elusive NBA title.

On top of having the No. 2 overall pick in D’Angelo Russell running things alongside Kobe Bryant, the LA Lakers just upped the ante even more in the Pacific Division by making some big moves with big names.

Let’s hope that brings home big banners.

Their most notable moves include a gamble on former Indiana Pacer Roy Hibbert — a guy who’s struggled, to put it nicely, in the playoffs, the addition of sixth-man of the year Lou Williams from the Toronto Raptors, and throwing Brandon Bass from the Boston Celtics in the mix.

Lakers News: Tarik Black Feels ‘Much More Comfortable’ This Season
Posted by: Ryan Ward Posted date: July 07, 2015 In: News | Comments :

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Last season, the Los Angeles Lakers finished the year with only 21 wins and only hope to hold onto their lottery pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Fortunately, along with securing the second overall pick to draft D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers did see some promising young players emerge that weren’t expected to.

Jordan Clarkson received most of the praise for his emergence as a potential star in the making, but he wasn’t the only rookie to make a name himself last season. Tarik Black is also a player on the squad that turned some heads and as a result seems to have a future in Los Angeles.

On Tuesday, Black spoke to the media following another NBA Summer League practice and said the following about his comfort level, via Lakers Twitter:

Robert Upshaw Working to Make Most of Lakers' Chance
The Los Angeles Lakers may be Robert Upshaw's final chance at an NBA career, and the 7-foot center fully understands that reality
By Shahan Ahmed

Los Angeles, CA

Robert Upshaw's last name may as well be "Upside." The Los Angeles Lakers invited the most promising defensive center in college basketball to their NBA Summer League team, and fans are giddy with excitement over the 7-foot undrafted center with mountains of potential.

Why did he go undrafted? Well, Upshaw had serious problems off the court. First, he was dismissed from Fresno State. After getting a second chance with Washington State, the center set a school record with eight blocks in a single game and stood out as the best defender on the collegiate level. In January, however, the embattled center was again dismissed for problems off the court.

Upside From Upshaw

by Mike Trudell
Lakers Reporter
Posted: Jul 07, 2015

Summer League in Las Vegas is around the corner, and more so than any past Lakers roster, young talent is everywhere.

For starters, you’ll hear the names D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson quite often.

That’s two highly touted lottery picks that expect to be stars in the NBA, plus the steal of the 2014 Draft.

Then there’s Tarik Black, who started games at center for the Rockets and Lakers as a rookie and has put his potential on game tape. Or Jabari Brown, the D-League’s leading scorer last season for the D-Fenders, who played well in his call up to the Lakers.

Lakers Rumors: L.A. Still In Trade Talks With Cavs For Brendan Haywood

Posted by: Ryan Ward Posted date: July 07, 2015 In: Rumors | Comments : 150

The Los Angeles Lakers may have struck out this summer in terms of landing a big name in NBA free agency, but the team remains active on the trade market. Agreeing to acquire Roy Hibbert from the Indiana Pacers may be the first of many trades to come.

According to Sam Amico of FOX Sports, the Lakers remain in trade talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers:

After failing to convince LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan, Greg Monroe or Kevin Love to sign with the team, the Lakers shifted gears in free agency with second-tier options. Although no real game-changers agreed to sign, Los Angeles has done well this week with Lou Williams, Brandon Bass and the acquisition of Hibbert.

Los Angeles Lakers: 3 Likely Small Forward Signings
by Chris Walton

The Los Angeles Lakers have definitely made a recovery from an initially underwhelming free agency. The team traded for defensive anchor Roy Hibbert and agreed to terms with Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams and veteran forward Brandon Bass. It’s important that the team surrounds their young core with competitive pieces.

If they plan to ever be successful, getting in the habit of winning is extremely beneficial.

While the team has addressed their backcourt needs and forward depth, they are still thin at the small forward position. Unless the Lakers are confident in starting rookie Anthony Brown, they must scour the market for a potential starter. Most of the Lakers’ preferred targets are off the boards, but there are some useful players left that could likely land in Los Angeles.

LA Lakers Trade Rumors: Nick Young Traded With Roy Hibbert, Brendan Haywood Coming Over DeMarcus Cousins, Jeremy Lin To Mavericks?

By M. Jussim
Jul 07, 2015 10:37 AM EDT

The LA Lakers have agreed to trade for Roy Hibbert with the Indiana Pacers and players like Nick Young, Ryan Kelly and Robert Sacre could be traded in the deal after the team had interest in a DeMarcus Cousins trade, while Brandon Bass and Lou Williams have agreed to sign free agent deals and Jeremy Lin could be on his way to the Dallas Mavericks in a sign and trade move.

The Lakers missed out on the big name free agents like LaMarcus Aldridge and DeAndre Jordan, but the team has been active this offseason after the draft. The team took D'Angelo Russell with the third overall pick and reports have Los Angeles signing Bass and Williams while snagging Hibbert in a trade from Indiana. Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports

With crazy folks who have learned to be successful available to help him - hopefully the mentorship of World Peace, Walton, Kareem, Magic, BScott and the Black Mamba can keep him going forward

NBA free agency: Who's still left?

DDN Correspondent Posted on 07 Jul, 2015 at 08:38:PM IST

NBA free agency: Who's still left? The first 6 days of the NBA free agent period featured frantic action, big contracts and lots of scheming, with DeAndre Jordan and LaMarcus Aldridge both changing teams, however the hitch to all that excitement is that we're now in a position where LeBron James, Marc Gasol, Josh Smith, Enes Kanter, and Jordan Hill are all among the top 10 free agents left on the board.
