Just got rid of some nasty spyware, but now I am getting messages coming in fast and furious from symantec saying all these outgoing e-mails I'm "sending" are being rejected. But, I'm not sending out ANY e-mails. Anyone heard of this? What should I do? I usually run Ad-Aware, spy-subtract, etc. HELP!!

Yeap, you're computer is probably being used as a zombie to send out spam due to some trojan/worm/virus you picked up.

If the computer that's broken is the one you're on right now do this:

First... smack yourself on the head for not keeping your virus definitions up to date and running your virus checker each day. Now do this...

1. Print this post
2. Disconnect your Internet connection
3. Back-up your important data (photos, emails (*.pst, or *.mbox files), etc) NOW on CDR
4. I think you said you have some Symantec product so run Norton Anti-virus now. If not then reconnect your Internet (after backup of your critical data) then on to step 5.
5. Run your Anti-virus software (or AVG Free edition by Grisoft is [/b]GREAT)
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
6. Run Adaware by Lavasoft
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

7. Now check to see if your computer is still screwed. If so do this:

8. Turn off system restore (so the next batch of Anti-virus sofware can clean the virii from your restore points as well).

9. Run your Anti-virus software again
10. Run Adaware again
11. Run Housecall antivirus (online) http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
12. Run Bitdefender antivirus (online) http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
13. Run Computer Associates antivirus (online) http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Now you may ask yourself... Why am I running all this antivirus software? Well because some are better at catching/cleaning certain virii than others. Just do it.

14. Check to see if your system is clean. If so do this...
15. Turn system restore back on.
16. Run a virus scan on all the files that you backed up. You if a virus is found you wont be able to clean it since its on a CD-R, but at least its isolated.
17. Copy the clean files back to your computer.

If you still have the infection after all that, then you may just have to reformat/reinstall Windows. Before you do that, post your results here b/c there still might be another way.

Good Luck.

I had the same problem once before..same exact thing happened..those emails are bogus..they are fake emails that just keep on popping up on your screen like 1000 times..what you gotta do is download Spybot search and destroy..its an awesome FREE program..open it up and do a complete scan of your computer..dont worry about those pop ups..they are annoying as hell but just keep on doing the scan, once the scan is complete..get rid of all of the spyware found..then restart your computer..you will see that it works..the pops up will disappear..

Get rid of Symantec and get F-Secure. It cost more, but works a hell of a lot better against worms, spyware, etc....

www.f-secure.com

I have Charter and the highspeed cable connect gives us F-Secure for free. I was buying their service and that same day I got rid of Norton's crappy stuff I found out Charter has the hook up. The Suite is dope!
