TNT’s Craig Sager is getting stem cells from his son in latest leukemia battle

TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager, and his outrageous suits, have been a staple on national NBA broadcasts for years. But he’s battled some pretty serious health issues recently. In April of 2014, Sager revealed that he had been diagnosed with leukemia, which forced him to sit out the entire 2014 playoffs. Tributes and well-wishes poured in from all over the NBA and the sports world in general. He made his triumphant return to the sidelines this past March, before being dealt another brutal setback when the cancer returned. Fortunately, he’s still fighting, and the next step is receiving a stem cell transplant from his son, Craig Sager, Jr.

The younger Sager tweeted a photo of his father at the hospital ahead of the treatments:

They’re far from out of the woods, but it seems like Sager is doing well and hanging in there. Hopefully he can get back soon. Everyone’s rooting for him.

Want some good news?

Craig Sager’s cancer returned last spring, but after a summer of treatment, he’s headed back to work.

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle:

This is fantastic.

The NBA is more fun with Sager around.

There's dozens of awful suits to be found and worn; take care of this for us Sager.

I can't wait. Those suits are the stuff of legends.

I hope he's well. Being cleared to "go home for good" is a treatment choice, not a diagnosis.

Craig Sager will work opening night for TNT

Just before the start of the 2014 NBA playoffs, beloved TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager was diagnosed with leukemia. After 11 months of treatment, he returned to work in March, before the cancer returned and he was forced to step away again. Turner has officially unveiled their plans for October 27’s opening-night telecast, and it features a welcome piece of news: Sager has been officially cleared to work again and will be on sideline duty for the Warriors-Pelicans game in Oakland.

From the press release:

The Opening Night doubleheader will feature the NBA Eastern Conference Champion Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James visiting the Chicago Bulls and Jimmy Butler at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the Warriors and Kia NBA MVP Stephen Curry hosting the New Orleans Pelicans and Anthony Davis at 10:30 p.m. TNT’s live game coverage will include the Ring Ceremony for the Warriors prior to their showdown with the Pelicans. Kevin Harlan will call the Cavs/Bulls telecast with analyst Reggie Miller and reporter David Aldridge, with Marv Albert providing play-by-play for Pelicans/Warriors with analyst Chris Webber and reporter Craig Sager.

Everybody in the basketball world has been rooting for Sager to pull through, and TNT’s NBA broadcasts haven’t been the same without his colorful suits and equally colorful personality. He’s a pretty hard guy not to like if you meet him, and it’s terrific news for everybody that he’ll be back this year. But most importantly, he’s beaten leukemia twice, which is a tremendous accomplishment. With any luck, this time the treatment will stick.

Craig Sager says his cancer is no longer in remission

Turner Sports reporter Craig Sager said his cancer is no longer in remission.

This is the third time Sager has battled leukemia since he was first diagnosed with the disease in 2014.

In an interview that will air Tuesday on HBO's "Real Sports," Sager concedes he has a tough road ahead.

"I've already had two stem-cell transplants. Very rarely does somebody have a third," Sager said in an excerpt of the interview posted online. "So I have to maintain my strength, so I can go through this."

Sager previously received bone-marrow and stem-cell transplants from his son, Craig. He plans to continue his fight.

"Still kicking, still fighting. I haven't won the battle. It's not over yet, but I haven't lost it either," Sager told HBO. "There have been some victories and some setbacks. I still have to fight it, and I still have a lot of work to do."

Sager, 64, primarily works on Turner's broadcasts of the NBA and NCAA tournament. He has become a well-known fixture, thanks to his years of experience and colorful suits.

Despite the news, Sager is still scheduled to be part of Turner's "NBA on TNT" broadcasts through April, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Craig Sager slated to work two NBA games next week for TNT

Earlier this week, beloved TNT reporter Craig Sager revealed in an interview with HBO that his leukemia, which he’s been fighting since spring 2014 and beaten twice, is no longer in remission. Sager is optimistic that he’ll win the battle for a third time, but it’s still scary news given his history.

Fortunately, it’s not going to stop him from working:

It’s great to see Sager still doing games on TNT, and hopefully this is a sign that his latest battle is winnable. TNT’s NBA broadcasts are not the same without him.
