YINOMA'S OP...

2015 Free Agency is all but over. So I'm letting this cat out of the bag, so that folks are killing each other in 2015 free agency thread. We will have around $60m in space, but I'd prefer to save some cap money to move forward into 2017 (when cap rises again by IIRC 18m ish) to offer a deal to Westbrook, and if possible, Westbrook AND Ibaka.

CENTERS:
Hibbert
-I think if he plays reasonably well, the Lakers/Hibbert may have a mutual interest to re-sign. Let’s say it’s around the 18m range.
Noah-there are concerns about his durability/declining athleticism/lack of offensive game. But he’s still someone the team may look at.
Mozgov-may be able to take him from the Cavs, but he will be closer to 30.
Nene/Al Jefferson are options but given age, I wouldn’t pursue them.
Whiteside: not sure I'd be ready to throw a max or near max at a guy who has been a bit AWOL until last season.

Best Bet: Re-sign Hibbert

PFs:
Horford-I’ve always coveted him. But his injury concerns are worrisome. And if he’s on the Lakers, he’s playing center. I think he may rather play PF over center, and he’s 30 by next summer and probably wants to win now. There's a chance we could keep Hibbert and pair him with Horford, or heck, re-unite the Florida boys and do Noah/Hibbert.
Bass-may be a 1 year rental, but if things go right he may opt into his deal or pursue a smaller extension with the Lakers.
Ryan Anderson-we have Randle as our likely PF, but I can see the Lakers showing interested in him as a floor spacer.

Best Bet: Re-sign Bass, would LOVE to sign Horford though.

SFs:
Durant-unlikely he comes but we’ll certainly pursue him, and for good reason.
Deng-would be over 30, but a possible fall-back option.
H.Barnes-only RFA I might consider making an offer. Test GSW’s mettle and don’t allow them to game free agency with a lower cap hold. Not that we are the frontrunners, but if GSW matched they would likely be out of the Durant sweepstakes.
MKG-possibly another RFA consideration, but no offensive game. Still young and can improve, but I worry he will never have a colorable jump shot.
Parsons-injury history concerns me. But this dude can recruit (maybe not close the deal). We may need that going forward.
Batum-I’ve long coveted him. When healthy, a very good defender and 3/D player. Would be a perfect player to team up with a run/gun game.
Dudley-I know he said some rude things about Kobe, but this guy is the closest thing to an assistant coach/player. He really helps young players improve (see Milwaukee).

Best Bet: Batum. The RFAs will likely be matched, Durant going elsewhere. There will be quite a bidding war for Batum.

SGs:
Kobe-this is a tough one. He’ll be 38, and I doubt his body will hold up to playing major minutes and over 50 games. Rebuilding becomes a bit tough with an aging Mamba. Can Jeannie Buss let him go if his contract demands are too high?
Wade-1 year deal with Miami, they may not agree to terms to bring him back. Lakers would of course be interested in the big name. He should retire in Miami.
DeRozan-has some warts in his game, but is an LA native, may be looking to come home. A bit of a chucker but would be a consideration.
Clarkson-would be eligible for a payday. Not sure if he would be amenable to letting the Lakers game the cap system by waiting until the end of free agency to sign him to a big deal. Not sure what his FMV is at this point. But assuming something like a 16/5/5 season next year, may be looking at a big payday.

Best Bet: Mamba may return, but it'll have to be a steep discount, something that he may not want. I can see DROZ being of interest too.

PGs:
Conley-with DLO, not sure if the Lakers would target him with a 20m+ deal unless Durant explicitly wanted him. He could actually work with DLO.
Shaun Livingston-would love to have a guy like him off the bench. Would be over 30 y.o. but not sure if Warriors would retain him given their pending extensions for guys like Barnes, then Curry (2017).

Best Bet: It's unlikely we spend a lot of $ of a PG given DLO/Clarkson.

BOTTOM LINE: I think the 2016 class is really overhyped. There will be too many teams with a max slot, but not enough players worthy of a max deal. In that sense, if the Lakers strike out on Durant, maybe Conley/Horford, I can see the Lakers re-signing Hibbert, Clarkson, maybe going for Batum, or trying to sell Noah/Horford on coming back together as a duo in LA (I think we may be one of the few teams that could offer that).

C - I'm all for resigning Hibbert as long as he does a good job anchoring the defense and especially if his new lighter frame (267 lbs) translates well to the modern game, which I believe it will.

PF - I agree with resigning Bass as long as Randle shows us something this year.

SF - All in on Durant and Batum would be the consolation prize. Only if he plays well in Charlotte though. His 2014-2015 campaign wasn't his greatest.

SG - Resign Clarkson (Arenas Rule)

PG - Nothing

Yeah, it's a bit sobering going through the list of guys. These guys are players that I thought would be of interest to the Lakers.

The one possibility that is intriguing to me, health willing, is Horford/Noah. A chance for them to reunite.

Well, the huge 2015 thread was started in November...but I thought it may take the hounds off of Deuce if we started another thread.

But I think this season intricately plays off of 2016 free agency. Very interesting.

Small note on Clarkson. LA can't game the system by signing him last unless he takes the mle or lower. Beyond that they have to use cap space.

Ah, good point. Hmm. So wonder how much we'd have to likely budget for him then.

I could see someone giving Clarkson the max..... not having his bird rights could be costly.

1. Parson's if healthy
2. Batum
3. DeRozan.

our own FA: Sign Hibbert, Clarkson and bass.

keep 1 super max for 27

That's really contextual. The strong point for la is that they can't lose him even if they need the cap room for other things. He simply can't jump, and even if he takes the qualifying offer, he's still restricted in 17.

My guess is if he shows out, la would love to see an arenas level offer to him, because they match it and still get a low cap hit over two years. But the likelihood is that they sign say hibbert and batum, and still have 20 mil-ish in cap and can offer him a solid deal out if cap space. If they don't pay him out of cap space (assuming he shows out), it means they landed multiple big fish.

Considering what we need to get back into contention, that's a very underwhelming FA class. Our front office has struck out two seasons in a row. With that said, I don't like our chances at landing KD. I fear that some dark days are ahead for us.

I think they will go for KD, but the difference is (unless the Lakers give Kobe another major cap-affecting extension), we can offer a max to KD and still have cap space to go after the guys listed above. Heck, we can even shoot for a RFA if Durant is off the board, and only 21m in cap space is affected while we go shopping with the other nearly 40m in cap space.

As 24 pointed out, the wild card is Clarkson. It's almost in our team's interest for another team to offer a poison pill contract where the first 2 years are MLE IIRC. If no one offers, then we have to use whatever cap space we have to sign him.

Obviously, the A+ summer would be something like Durant/Horford. Unlikely, but what if we got Horford and Noah and re-signed Clarkson and got a wing player for the rest?

There are many ways to mix/match thanks to the 60m in cap space.

I'm very leery of giving a 21m max to a guy like Whiteside, even considering his talents. I guess we'll see, but there are so many combinations we can have thanks to 60m.

From that list, it's kd or bust for me. And I have a gut feeling he's coming here. Why? Because as I've watched kd, he looks to me like someone who is tired of being number 2. Struggling constantly with his teammate westbrook to be the number 1 option. I'm sure he loves westbrook, but I think hes secretly always craved the brightest lights and the nba super fame of being the un disputed main man in the biggest nba market. If we can lure ollie, or thibs, or Becky hammon, I think it would definitely help our cause. Kd will be our shaq!

the good thing with having 60mil in cap space is u can parlay the signings.

meaning if durant only wants to come here if some other guy is coming, then u sign that guy and then let durant sign

names can change

Yup. That's the BIG difference between our failed free agency in 2014 and 2015. Multiple max room. However, the only downside is that there will be 20+ teams with a max slot, including teams that are more competitive right now and possibly in 2016.

Agree about Batum, always wanted him on the team.

Batum + Hibbert would be awesome going forward setting the table up for our boy Westbrook to take the reigns the year after.

The thunders worst move was letting harden go. I think being cheap has really hindered okc potential and kd knows it. LAL will never be afraid to spend.

How about this:

Hibbert
Randle
Batum
Westbrook/Clarkson
DLO

Nice. Then 2018, go for Paul George.

Well it will depend on how he plays this season. Teams have scouted him and he will have a full season to prove he can do what he did at the end of last season. I'm hopeful

Another factor, is kd has been one of the players who has shown the most respect and admiration to kobes legacy. He's not a lakers hater. There's nothing like being the star in lal.

It's his behavior that I'm most concerned about. Suspensions for blatantly dirty plays, techs, let alone all his problems before he had his 1st good season last year. I think Lakers stay away from that since it's a max contract we're talking about (unlike vet's minimum for Upshaw, MLE for Artest).

Another factor, is kd has been one of the players who has shown the most respect and admiration to kobes legacy. He's not a lakers hater. There's nothing like being the star in lal.

I'm just not positive KD comes here. If I had to make an educated guess:

1. OKC: he does a 1+1 (2nd year player option). He then enters 2017 as a 10th year player and gets into the 3rd tier max, which will be way over 30m.

2. Washington: have them behind OKC, but if he had to leave makes sense. Easier conference, team up with Wall/Beal to make a nice team to compete against the Cavs.

Small note on Clarkson. LA can't game the system by signing him last unless he takes the mle or lower. Beyond that they have to use cap space.

Ah, good point. Hmm. So wonder how much we'd have to likely budget for him then.

So if he plays extremely well, prob not all star level but promising, sign him or DeRozan? --> assuming both ask for near max
