Byron Scott Talks Kobe’s New Role, Offseason Pickups
by CBS Sports - losangeles.cbslocal.com

After adding two high-profile guards to their roster in the offseason, the Lakers will start to give Kobe Bryant significant minutes at small forward this season, Lakers head coach Byron Scott said Friday.

Bryant, who has mostly played shooting guard throughout his 19-year NBA career is embracing the change, Scott said.

“Kobe can adapt to any situation,” Scott said. “He just wants to be on the floor and wants to win.”

It’s all part of the team’s rebuilding effort as the Lakers add depth at the guard positions and groom Bryant’s successors. Last month, the team drafted point guard D’Angelo Russell with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. Earlier this month, the team signed last season’s Sixth Man Of The Year, shooting guard Lou Williams.

Scott hopes the pickups will help to lead the team back from a dismal 21-61 showing in his first year as head coach. But it will be a tough road.

Robert Upshaw Must Stay Out Of Trouble To Make Los Angeles Lakers’ Roster
by Brendan Patel - rantsports.com

Robert Upshaw was one of the top shot blocking prospects, oozing with potential and a likely lottery pick. But he ran into problems in college, and was kicked off of two separate teams for various reasons, and now faces a long road to make a professional roster. He has landed in a good situation with the Los Angeles Lakers, where they do not have a lot of depth at center and there won’t be as much pressure to win this season. Upshaw needs to take advantage of his situation and stay out of trouble off the court.

Upshaw proved in summer league that he has enough talent to play, and he can be a difference maker on defense. He is a huge body down low, with long arms that allow him to affect almost every opposing shot in the lane. He is not very quick or athletic, but has very good timing and can handle players one on one in the post. He reads the game well and could easily develop into one of the best weak side shot blockers in the league.

Lakers’ Coach Byron Scott Has A Lot To Prove This Season
by Brendan Patel - rantsports.com

The Los Angeles Lakers took their time last summer finding a head coach last summer, and ended up taking a popular name within the organization. Coach Byron Scott spent time as a player winning championships with the Lakers, and was well-liked by some of his more famous teammates. He was a mentor to Kobe Bryant early on, and has had success in the past, making two Finals appearances. But his first season did not go well, and there are several intriguing head coaches available that make this a very important season for Coach Scott.

Last year, the Lakers had to deal with a ton of injuries and a lack of talent compared to other teams. It was unlikely that they were going to compete for a playoff spot, even if Bryant and Steve Nash were healthy. A lot of things needed to fall into place, and the Western Conference was just too deep. Instead, the Lakers were forced to put in a variety of players depending on who was healthy, as they limped to the finish.

Lakers' choice of alum thrills Ocean View
by Tim Burt - ocregister.com

It’s been five years since Fountain Valley’s Anthony Brown made a name for himself playing basketball for Ocean View High School, thrilling fans with his stellar play during his three-year varsity career.

Time hasn’t erased those memories of Brown, who was selected as the Los Angeles Lakers No. 3 pick (second round, 34th overall) on June 25.

His former coaches and others remember Brown, now 22, as a hardworking athlete, a team player, a great student and someone who has been an NBA fan for a long time.

Since he was drafted by the Lakers, there has been quite a buzz among coaches, former players and current players at Ocean View about the 6-foot-7 Brown, who played for four years at Stanford. He averaged 14.8 points and 6.9 rebounds and made 79 of 179 3-point field goals (44 percent) in his senior season.

“As soon as he got drafted, my phone was blowing up,” said Tim Walsh, co-head coach and Ocean View athletic director. “I had coaches in the area and former players (calling). It’s been a constant conversation. The current players are excited, and the alumni are excited as well.”

Jordan Clarkson’s Contract To Be Guaranteed
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers got a steal in the form of Jordan Clarkson in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft. Clarkson earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors last season and proved his worth as potential star in the making in Los Angeles.

With Clarkson being a second-round draft pick, the Missouri product is under contract for next season. Although under contract for a second season with the Lakers, the contract is non-guaranteed.

Fortunately for Clarkson, the second-year guard’s deal will become guaranteed on Saturday with the Lakers brass convinced Clarkson is a player with a promising future ahead, via Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times:

Clarkson poised for breakout season
by Carter Johnson - isportsweb.com

Most 2nd round picks don’t go on to become good players, let alone stars, in the NBA. Sure, there are a select few, such as Marc Gasol and DeAndre Jordan, overcome the odds to reach the pinnacle of stardom in the league and some even become stellar role players, but most are doomed to a short-career if they have one at all.

This will not be the case for Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson.

In fact, Clarkson has already overcome these odds by having a stellar rookie season in 2014-15. After struggling to stick on the roster early in the year and being relegated to the Lakers’ D-League affiliate, Clarkson thrived for the D-Fenders, earning a call-up before ascending to the starting point guard slot in the second half of the season. During that time, Clarkson was arguably the second-best rookie in the NBA next to Minnesota’s Andrew Wiggins and became the go-to guy for the Lakers, averaging 16.3 points per game for the last 3 months of the NBA season. Clarkson’s stellar play earned him 1st Team All-Rookie honors alongside the likes of first round picks in Wiggins, Orlando’s Elfrid Payton, Philly’s Nerlens Noel and Chicago’s Nikola Mirotic.
