Kobe Bryant’s Legacy is Coming to a Close
by Jonathan Asaad - todaysfastbreak.com

In a heart-wrenching interview for both Kobe Bryant fans and Los Angeles Lakers faithful, Bryant said that this season could “absolutely” be his last, according to Yahoo! Sports‘ Marc J. Spears.

Quote:
“I’m making this very simple. Either I like playing the game and going through this process or I don’t. I try to strip it down to the simplest form. Either I like playing some more or I don’t. But I think that decision needs to be made after the season. It’s hard to make a decision like that before the season.”

Young Kobe in his prime reveled in “going through this process” and figuring out ways to adjust his game to the various ailments he garnered throughout his career that threatened his effectiveness on the court.

However, the once illustrious Bryant has alas staggered and fallen from his pulpit in the last couple of seasons. Though noted for his unwavering mental fortitude, Bryant’s previous quote suggests that he’s finally started weighing the cost of going through the long, arduous hours at rehab, the gym, the weight room, etc. — a far cry from his mentality just two seasons ago, before a major injury left Bryant sidelined for the majority of the past two seasons.

At the age of 34 in his 17th season in the NBA, Kobe played a gruesome 38.6 minutes per game (second only to Luol Deng). He’d played the equivalent of three extra seasons, including his participation in the Summer Olympics with Team USA twice, and tallied a total of 220 playoff games. That was the last time fans of the NBA saw a fully healthy Kobe.

Jordan Clarkson Asked Byron Scott To Let Him Play In D-League Last Season
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

Few second-round draft picks have the kind of breakout rookie season Jordan Clarkson had with the Los Angeles Lakers last year. Clarkson far exceeded expectations after earning the minutes from head coach Byron Scott and eventually became a starter in the backcourt.

The main reason for Clarkson’s breakout year was his dedication to improving his craft. The Missouri product became determined to improve in any way possible, including spending time with the Los Angeles D-Fenders at times last season.

Clarkson recently talked about playing for the D-Fenders and how it helped turn him into the player he is today, via Brian Kotloff of Dleague.NBA.com:

Brandon Bass: healthy Kobe still ‘arguably the best player in the game’
by Darryn Albert - larrybrownsports.com

It looks like new Laker Brandon Bass wants to make sure his tenure in Los Angeles starts off on the right foot. And that means observing the Golden Rule of Lakerland: “Thou shalt speak highly of the Mamba.”

In an interview with Terrance Harris of the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Thursday, Bass kissed up a bit to local legend and new teammate Kobe Bryant. “We have arguably the best player in the game still,” the former Boston Celtic said. “When he is healthy he is a monster still. If he is healthy, he’s right up there with the best players in the league, that’s LeBron or whoever the best players in the league are. When Kobe is healthy, 19 years in the game he is still elite.”

Lakers Roundtable: Grading the Lou Williams signing
by silverscreenandroll.com

With the offseason into full hibernation mode, it's high time for the Silver Screen and Roll crew to give their preliminary verdicts on just how well the Los Angeles Lakers front office did in their summer maneuvers. This week, we grade the signing of the newly crowned Sixth Man of the Year, Lou Williams, to a three-year, $21 million dollar contract.

Before the Lakers signed him, what did you feel would be a fair offseason deal for Lou Williams?

Brandon Bass ‘Didn’t Expect’ Kobe Bryant To Welcome Him
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

A lot was made of the awkward silence among the three veteran additions the Los Angeles Lakers introduced to the media a few weeks ago. Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams and Brandon Bass were asked whether Kobe Bryant had reached out to them and all three players didn’t know how or want to respond to the question and therefore said nothing while anxiously awaiting the next question.

Bass was recently asked about the awkward moment during his introductory press conference and said the following about his thoughts on the situation, via Terrance Harris of NOLA.com:

3 Things Robert Upshaw Can Learn From Roy Hibbert
by Matthew Patterson - lakeshowlife.com

Many expected the Lakers to grab Robert Upshaw with one of their two later picks, but instead the Lakers were lucky enough to draft two solid players at the 27th and 34th spots, and still end up with the seven footer by signing him as an un-drafted free agent.

Because of second year player Tarik Black, we did not get to see as much of Upshaw as we hoped to in the Las Vegas Summer League, but we got an idea of what his game is about, and the type of player he can become.

A great early comparison for Upshaw’s game would be his new teammate Roy Hibbert. Like Upshaw, Hibbert came into the league with great size and potential, but had a very raw skill set that would take years to develop. Hibbert looked a bit uncomfortable and slow during his first few seasons, much like Upshaw in the summer league. Big men must stay patient and continue to work on their games, and those who do, usually grow to become dominant forces in the paint.
