|
|
Quote: | Former president George W. Bush – one of the most vilified figures in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the disastrous floods here a decade ago – returned to this rebuilt city Friday.
“We honor the resilience of a great American city whose levees gave out but whose people never gave up,” Bush said inside Warren Easton Charter High School in central New Orleans to warm applause from supporters.
Bush’s visit was part of a citywide spate of events and symposiums commemorating the floods that hit 10 years ago Saturday – and one of its most controversial. Bush was president when Katrina made landfall in Mississippi on Aug. 29, 2005. He was widely criticized for not visiting the city immediately after floods inundated 80% of the city and leading what’s been considered a clumsy and slow-footed initial federal response to the disaster.
In one of the more controversial photos of that event, Bush is seen looking out the window of Air Force One at New Orleans below days after floods overtook neighborhoods and left families stranded on roofs. The plane continued without stopping.
Grant, 35, said he was “shocked” that the former president would return for the storm’s anniversary.
“Everyone here remembers suffering, crying for help, while George Bush was on his ranch on vacation,” he said. “It was days before help started arriving.”
Bush has admitted that his administration’s response tarnished his legacy. |
Little did the nation know at the time that A Stolen Election, False War, and Botched Katrina would not end up as the crowning achievements of his Legacy.

There's nothing ballsy about being profoundly ignorant, stupid and unsympathetic. |

I'm pretty sure he meant the guy has balls to show his face in that town on the Anniversary considering he's the face of what went wrong for so many there, and seen to be -as you say - profoundly ignorant, stupid and unsympathetic _________________ I'm On point, On task, On message, and Off drugs. I know what ocho was going for. My point is that the move had little to do with boldness and everything to do with being hugely out of touch with reality and decency. |

Ignorant, stupid? George Bush graduated Yale. His SAT score was 1206 (566 verbal, 640 math). His cumulative undergraduate GPA at Yale was 2.35. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

I remember G Dub giving a speech from New Orleans. The lights were back on and I'm thinking progress was made. Then they shut the lights off for a few days and went back to watching people melt in the swamp. If you haven't been on the gulf coast during the August heat, it's just ugly.
Just crazy how the Army Core of Engineers put band aids on gashes. Seems like if it's not the American way, it's the wrong way. Should have been in Denmark and Holland learning from those cats on what a levee system should look like.
Never good when 75-80% of the city is under water and most of the people can't swim. |

It's not rebuilt really. | True. The French Quarter was not heavily damaged by Katrina. According to reports is was only significantly damaged.
The parade routes were altered in 2006 to skirt the damage done by Katrina. I don't think the Mardi Gras will ever be the same. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
