It is probably because there was very little that was elegant about his game. Has there ever been a harder worker at his size? He was relentless.

1st time I saw him play was in 1992, he was with the Bucks, 36 years old.
Could still play, and rebounded tenaciously.

Never looked too skilled, short range on his jumper, not a leaper, not a fast break runner, but - really - unstopable under the rim. Could make shots from all angles, creating room when there wasn't. Very very agile, and relentless.

He played in an era where they were much more flashier players like Bird, Magic, MJ, Erving, etc....
So he was easy to overlook....
I don't think many people know he retired in 1994-1995.

Also, his career peaked just as the Bird/Magic era was getting started. By the time a lot of people were beginning to pay attention to the NBA, Malone was entering a period where he hopped from team to team with a gradual decline. And the fact he only won a single ring keeps him behind the pack of great centers.

Caldwell Jones(d. 9/21/14) , Darryl Dawkins (d. 8/27/15) and today Moses Malone.

All three 76ers centers dead in less than one year.

Moses was a scary player because we had no one who could contain him. He was strong as a bull and absolutely relentless on the glass. He had back-to-back seasons where he was pulling down 7 offensive boards a game. We were saved all those years he was a Rocket because the rest of his team wasn't very good.

Farewell to an NBA Legend.

Fo, Fo, Fo!

http://nba.nbcsports.com/2015/09/13/barkley-talks-moses-malone-man-he-called-dad/

Quote:

Barkley talks Moses Malone, man he called “dad”

The entire NBA community — from Commissioner Adam Silver down through numerous players any true fan of the game — have been saddened by the sudden passing of Hall of Fame big man Moses Malone.

Few felt that as acutely as Charles Barkley.

When Barkley was drafted into the NBA he spent his first two seasons in Philadelphia a teammate of Malone, and the two formed a close bond. Malone was Barkley’s NBA mentor, to the point that when Barkley was inducted into the Hall of Fame Malone as one of his presenters.

Barkley, now an NBA analyst for TNT, released this statement.

“The man I called ‘Dad’ passed today. Words can’t explain my sadness. I will never know why a Hall of Famer took a fat, lazy kid from Auburn and treated him like a son and got him in shape and made him a player. Every time I saw him I called him ‘Dad.’ I hope he knew how much I appreciated and loved him.”

Hopefully so. And hopefully Malone realized how many others around the NBA felt the same way. Including another former teammate, current Clippers coach Doc Rivers, who released this statement.

“I am saddened by the news of the passing of Moses. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. For me, Moses was a teammate, a friend and a mentor. He taught me what it took to be a true pro. The NBA lost a giant today and I lost a friend. Moses Malone – there was truly no one like him.”

Dang, what a loss. Another young man gone too soon.

I recall from in the early Magic Johnson Laker years, no greater challenge existed for our club than to face a Moses Malone team. He represented the toughest level of challenge for the club IMO, just as tough as Bird's Celtics.

At his best - and that was for a decade or so from 1975 through 1985 - there was no better center in the big league than MM. He could play Cap straight up and give as good as he received.

I've felt for many years that the end-of-career tailing off of his production worked against recall of his overall reputation. He was under-appreciated as a talent by the general viewing public. He was strong, yes and hard-working, but he was also fundamentally strong and extremely athletic until his mid-thirties.

I think his body of work places him today as deserving of recognition among the greatest pro centers of all-time, with:

Mikan
Russell
Chamberlain
Abdul-Jabbar
Malone
Robinson
Olajuwon
O'Neal
Duncan

I'd be impartial to having him to Olajuwon on a dream team.

I think the consensus is that Moses is the 6th best center of all time after the Big Three, Shaq, and Hakeem. I'd say Robinson comes after him. Mikan is such a special case he's sort of off to the side.

I was so sorry to hear the sad news and only 60 years old. The 13 time All-Star and MVP was one of the greatest centers in the NBA.

I venture to say that he would be on most peoples list of top five centers in the history of the game.

My thoughts exactly. I worked in Philly for a short time that included Moses' time with the Sixers. Fierce and gentle, one wondered how he could be both things, but he was.

My five greatest pro centers:

William Felton Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Moses Malone
Hakeem Olajuwon

Quote:
Sixers to retire Moses Malone’s number next season

Kobe Bryant‘s pregame tribute video stole the show in Philadelphia, but Tuesday night was Moses Malone tribute night. The former league MVP and Hall of Famer passed away in September, and his legacy was honored by the Sixers during a halftime ceremony. During the festivities, Malone’s son announced that his No. 2 will be retired by the organization next season.

There’s no question that Malone, one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, deserves to have his number retired. The only relevant question is: why didn’t this happen years ago? The ceremony next season should be good, but it would have been better if they had done it when Malone was alive to participate in it. No Sixers player has worn No. 2 since Malone anyway, but it’s been over 20 years since he last wore a Sixers jersey. Why couldn’t they have found some time in those two decades to have a ceremony and hang a banner?

Wow. I'm too young to have watched Malone play in his prime, but I'm stunned. Gone way too young and easily one of the game's most underrated greats. A three-time MVP and champion.

One of the more underrated, under-appreciated players ever. Thanks to Nike, everyone has seems to think players need to be a ball hogging shooting guard to be considered great or the best. Savvy basketball folks know better.
