|
|
Quote: | Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr will take a leave of absence as he recovers from back surgery and will be replaced on an interim basis by Luke Walton.
The Warriors announced Thursday that Kerr will need time off for rehabilitation and recovery.
"After the first two days of training camp, I realized I need to take a step back and focus on my rehabilitation in order to be ready for the grind of another NBA season," Kerr said in a statement. "As I noted last week, my summer was difficult and no fun due to the multiple back surgeries. At this point, I simply want to get healthy and back to my normal daily routine on and off the court."
Kerr ruptured a disk in his back during Game 5 of the NBA Finals. He has had two surgeries to repair the injury, one on July 28 and another on Sept. 4.
The Warriors said they don't know how long Kerr will be out. |

Hire him after we fire Byron in 2 seasons. Luke will probably get a head coaching job before that, though. |

Wow. Go Luke!
Never thought Luke Walton would be head coaching BEFORE Kobe retired. Haha. |

Nice to see some former Lakers hitting up the NBA scene. They established a bond during those 2 championship seasons that will never be broken.
Here's an interview with Sasha on the Knicks. |

Good for him although I have to wonder how much the players will really respect him I mean its not as if he had a great career just right place at the right time.
Sure you could say that about Steve Kerr but he was a way more successful player in comparison. |

Luke is going to make a good head coach some day. I have little doubt about it. |

Warriors start 4-11 and Walton is blacklisted. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns". |

Players respect guys who never played in the league. Luke is a guy who played years in the league and has a HOF father. All that matters is you know the game. |

Wow, so many ex-Lakers nowadays working the sideline in a suit.
Nice resume bullet point for Luke, hopefully one small step in a long, illustrious career. _________________ Lakers. Built different. |

Steve Kerr said he had rare spinal fluid leak, no timetable for return

It was known Steve Kerr had back surgery during the off-season, but the announcement that the coach of the NBA champs would be taking some time off to recover during the preseason and potentially beyond did catch everyone off guard.
Sunday he attended Warriors practice (he’s done that a few times during his “absence”) and spoke to the media about what was going on — and it’s not pretty. From ESPN’s Ethan Sherwood Strauss, who was at practice.
“I had a spinal fluid leak during the first surgery,” he told the media Sunday at the Warriors’ practice facility. “It’s very rare, it does happen occasionally, but it happens when there’s an accidental nick of the dura that surrounds the spinal cord. But I lost spinal fluid, took about a month to figure out what was going on, a lot of headaches, some other symptoms.”
After the leak became apparent, Kerr had an additional surgery Sept. 4 to repair the issue.
However, he can’t put a timetable on his return.
“It’s a matter of your body sort of recalibrating,” he said. “Unfortunately, it’s not like a sprained ankle, one to two weeks. There’s no telling. It’s a little bit open-ended, but everyone’s confident I’m going to be fine. That’s where I am. I’m not going to be put a timetable on when I’m going to come back.”
Luke Walton is the Warriors’ interim coach until Kerr returns.
With the same core players in the same system, the Warriors shouldn’t have an issue in the short-term without Kerr. As the season grinds on and certainly heading into the playoffs, they will need Kerr and his ability to push the right buttons with this group. But for a few weeks or so, the system is on cruise control. |

Valuable experience for Luke getting to take the reins of a champion. I really hope we make a run at Luke after this season. He's going to get scooped up by someone soon and I think we can all agree that Byron isn't the long-term answer. |

Wow the NBA season is only a few days away so glad to be able to see Inside the NBA again...

Quote: | Luke Walton to begin season as Warriors’ interim head coach
On Tuesday, the Warriors will receive their championship rings and begin their title defense against the Pelicans at Oracle Arena — but it will be with a different coach. As Steve Kerr continues to recover from offseason back surgery, the team has announced that associate head coach Luke Walton will take his place at the beginning of the season, until he recovers.
Kerr has been at practice and hanging around the team, so there’s a chance he isn’t too far off from returning to the sidelines. But he still isn’t physically up to coaching the team on a day-to-day basis. It’s unclear when he’ll return. |
