It seems it is obligatory to to learn the opening notes for Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California, and Crazy Train.

Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is a nice one to learn.

Noiw that's funny -- was at a friend's house last week & picked up a guitar for the first time in about a year -- without even thinking about what I was playing, "Wish You Were Here" is what came out. Couldn't remember the lead though (the one Gilmour scat sings over).

Cat Scratch Fever and Smoke on the Water. The first songs everyone learned back when I first picked up a guitar.

Now though, I think Little Wing (SRV) would be what I would try to learn. Good luck with that one though...

I just wish I had discovered Django Reinhardt earlier in life. Sometimes you find inspiration in places you'd never expect.

SRV is definately a great/difficult one to learn.

I'm personally enjoying a guy named Marc Broussard who can jam.

smoke on the water- deep purple
brain stew- green day
blitzkreig bop- ramones (the first song i learned)
ironman- black sabbath

im more of a punk rocker so its easy for me to learn a lot of songs within a short amount of time. Pretty much any green day or ramones song would be easy.

Classical Gas is a good tune to play. Sucky name but good tune nonetheless.
Santa Fe is a another nice tune.
Furthermore, all the Jack Johnson songs.

LOL, you have just revealed my entire guitar song list!

Of course, I play them both with heavy distortion!

Little Wing is actually a cover of one of Jimi Hendrix' greatest songs...

I know, (hence the "SRV"), I just think Stevie took it to another level... no disrespect to Jimi, of course. And typically, I don't care for a remake, or a re-anything with an already good song, but what Stevie did with Little Wing, to me, is just beyond greatness.

All that said, perhaps someone just learning to play shouldn't quite include 'Jimi' or 'Stevie' in the song lists just yet.

Saw Toto at a club gig last year, and Steve Lukather did Little Wing solo -- really amazing job with it.

im with Da Ocho! Eruption - Van Halen! jk. thats a bit too advanced unless youre a guitar god like me

the ultimate easiest song to play for a beginner is the intro to Nothing Else Matters by Metallica cause all you need is one hand in the beginning. learned that one when i was younger cause it was so easy.

good and easy guitar riffs:
enter sandman
under the bridge
come as you are
toxicity
back in black
iron man

some of the holy grail of guitar solos (and ones that arent really too hard to play) are:

comfortably numb -floyd
time -floyd
hotel california - eagles
crazy train - ozzy
bohemian rhapsody - queen
heartreaker - zep
november rain - gnr (i love those solos)

good guitar solosn for beginners or intermediates

santeria - sublime
knockin on heavens door - gnr
nothing else matters - metallica

i recommend every beginner go to http://www.guitarbt.com and download free background tracks for all your favorite songs. learn to play in time and play along with the beat of your favorite songs. they have some really good jam tracks too and lessons you can download for free. i was in heaven when i discovered that site.
