Lakers still need to cut at least four players before regular season
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

By Oct. 26, the Lakers will submit their opening night roster to the NBA.

Currently the franchise has 19 players under contract, four over the regular-season maximum. Twelve Lakers have fully guaranteed deals, while rookies Jonathan Holmes, Michael Frazier and Robert Upshaw have relatively small promises they'll earn if cut.

In late September, General Manager Mitch Kupchak said he might consider waiving a guaranteed player, if the team feels it's the right basketball decision.

Recent draft picks Larry Nance Jr. (27th overall) and Anthony Brown (34th) are safe. Third-year forward Ryan Kelly, who has played well through the preseason, also seems like a lock to stick.

The lone player with a guaranteed deal (nearly $1 million) on the bubble appears to be center Robert Sacre. While he's a legitimate 7-footer, and an exuberant locker room presence, Sacre may need to beat out both Tarik Black and Upshaw to keep his position.

New face(s) of the Lakers?
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

It's almost the end of the Kobe Bryant era. Possibly in marketing, too.

In a sign of the times, electronic billboards near the Las Vegas Strip featured Julius Randle standing in front of Jordan Clarkson and D'Angelo Russell. Not pictured: Bryant.

The same image was promoted on a large indoor pillar at the MGM Grand Hotel, the site of the Lakers' exhibition Tuesday against the Sacramento Kings, along with the catchphrase "The Next Generation" in big block letters.

Smaller versions of the promotion were posted near some of the hotel's elevators.

The Lakers acknowledged they created the campaign, not MGM in an attempt to sell game tickets, but the team added a caveat.

"Certainly we're very high on our young players, and interested in promoting them as the future of our team," Lakers spokesman John Black said Tuesday. "It should not be seen as a slight towards Kobe in any way. At the time we committed to this promotional campaign, we weren't sure he'd be back from his injury. Now that he's fully healthy, we'll be focusing on promoting him and celebrating his 20th season as a Laker."

Lakers have a potential 'Showtime' revivalist in Marcelo Huertas
by Tim Faklis - sportingnews.com

Jordan Clarkson is fresh off an All-Rookie First Team performance. Rookie D'Angelo Russell has all the makings to become a star combo guard down the road. Kobe Bryant, with all his health problems, remains an enormous presence. But even in the existence of a steady backcourt for the future, there is nothing wrong with more stability in the present.

Marcelihno Huertas — or Marcelihno, as he's better known and his jerseys have read — joins the Lakers after more than a decade of excellence in Europe. At 32, he's past the prime point of his storied career, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have anything left to offer. His accolades — including two all-ACB team nods and being named MVP of the 2006 South American championships — are impressive but have been topped by past NBA prospects.

What makes Huertas so fun is the way he plays and the NBA style he is most comfortable playing in. Best of all, he knows his role going forward with his team.

Julius Randle Has Been Impressive So Far This Preseason
by Brendan Patel - rantsports.com

There was a lot of hope for Julius Randle last year, after the Los Angeles Lakers spent a high draft pick on him. He had a very good freshman season in college, and his strength and athleticism made him a good bet to make an immediate impact in the league. Unfortunately he was injured during the first game, and had to sit out the rest of his rookie year. There have been other star players who have missed a year due to injury, but were still able to come back strong. The Lakers are hoping that Randle can be another one of those players.

So far this preseason, Randle has looked like one of the better players on the roster. He has shown a lot of confidence on offense, which has resulted in solid production. Randle is shooting over 50 percent from the field and averaging double-digit points. He has shown off his versatile offensive game, which allows him to attack from different areas of the floor.

Larry Nance Jr. waits patiently out of limelight for Lakers to call his number
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

Fans chanted his first name the last time Larry Nance Jr. was here, delighted as he hurled his body around the court in a shot-blocking, rebounding frenzy for the Lakers' summer-league team.

On one play in July, Nance blocked Jahlil Okafor's shot so hard against the backboard, he thought he broke his hand.

Now Nance is getting scant playing time in the exhibition season as the Lakers' other first-round pick, the one not named D'Angelo.

Nance was drafted with the 27th selection, 25 after Russell, and is quietly waiting for his time. He did not play in the Lakers' 107-100 loss Tuesday to Sacramento at the MGM Grand Hotel.

He's scored three points in two exhibitions, sitting out the other three games as Coach Byron Scott takes a deeper look at other players.

Lakers fans stop Russell in the street seemingly wherever he goes. Same for Julius Randle, drafted seventh overall in 2014. Their images were on electronic billboards and in hotel lobbies here, touted as "The Next Generation" along with Jordan Clarkson.

See the most-read stories in Sports this hour >>
None of this has happened for Nance.

"I love it," Nance said. "Those guys deserve the attention. And at the same time, I'm from Wyoming. I'm not necessarily thriving for the attention. I'm not thirsty for it. This is all stuff that I'm accustomed to."

For Lamar Odom, Team Has Always Mattered More Than Anything, Even Himself
by Kevin Ding - bleacherreport.com

We spend a lot of time making sports more important than they really are. When we look at the life study that is Lamar Odom, we see the true value of athletic competition:

The relationships that enrich us.

The diversion that brings us relief.

The competition that motivates us.

The goals so worthwhile to hold, whether they are met or missed.

Odom is an example of how sports help us with life. He has always been at his best in basketball—bringing together a locker room with charm and honest interest in others, performing on the court with an unselfish skill set that delivers teammates whatever they need at any given time.

He was a team guy who has had an awful lot of trouble as an individual.

One can only imagine how difficult it has been for Odom in the year and three months since he was waived for not meeting the New York Knicks' standard of professionalism after Phil Jackson had given him an NBA lifeline.

Odom is now hospitalized after being found unconscious at a Nevada brothel. TMZ is reporting that he is in a coma.

For context: At 35, Odom is the same age as Pau Gasol, who just started the last NBA All-Star Game. He's younger than Kobe Bryant, 37, who remains the Los Angeles Lakers' leading man.

Odom and Gasol were the special forces that keyed the Lakers' NBA championships in 2009 and '10 for Bryant and Jackson. As good as he was on the court, usually finishing games instead of Andrew Bynum, Odom was invaluable as a connector behind the scenes.

You get a lot of talk from guys. Odom, though, truly cared about the team.

by Chris Roling - bleacherreport.com

It's high time for optimism surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers.

Preseason results don't matter, but the performances and lessons learned within each exhibition sure do. In other words, the Lakers continue to send off encouraging signs as the balancing act of veteran-young players continues to mesh on the hardwood.

As the Lakers iron out the kinks to dive into a Western Conference littered with sharks, there's news about how coach Byron Scott wants his team to play, positive signs about young players and good news about the latest Kobe Bryant injury.

Let's take a look.

Lakers Must Improve On Defense
by Brendan Patel - rantsports.com

The Los Angeles Lakers struggled greatly on defense last year, and it looks as if the trend will continue this season. The team has given up over 100 points three times this preseason, and although the preseason is a time to try new things out, they must show more improvement. It could easily be a problem for them all season, and it is something that every player needs to be dialed in on. The Lakers are not good enough as a team to take nights off, and defensive effort is an area they can work on every day.

Part of the problem for the Lakers is they just do not have the defenders to form an elite defense. They have several very good offensive players, as well as a couple of explosive youngsters, but lack many true lockdown defenders. The addition of Roy Hibbert can definitely help, as he has anchored top defenses before. But he also had a lot of quality perimeter defenders, and he will need to be at his best just to make this an average unit.

5 Reasons Lakers Fans Love Metta World Peace
by Shereen Rayan - lakeshowlife.com

Although some were questioning why the Lakers front office would bring Metta World Peace back into the fold, there are an abundance of reasons why Lakers fans love him. World Peace is a character with lots of layers but as each is pulled back they reveal another more interesting facet of his personality and what makes him who he is.

Some would say he is like a chameleon, ever changing, you never know what you’re going to get. These days, though, World Peace is more serious than years past. The man formerly known as Ron Artest wants to make a difference on this season’s Lakers team and wants to prove himself once again.

Though he was probably brought in mostly to be a mentor to Julius Randle this season, he has proved to the coaching staff that he can still play hopefully paving the way for a spot on the final roster. Even if you just look at how he has mentored Randle, that alone should be a reason to keep him, Randle is on fire!

Put aside his name changes and other antics, peel away a few layers, and you have a die hard Laker, who loves the game of basketball.

Let’s take a look at five reasons why Lakers fans love MWP.

Does Lakers Coach Byron Scott Dislike Robert Upshaw?
by Hannah Kulik - lakeshowlife.com

Robert Upshaw’s brief journey with the Los Angeles Lakers has been anything but normal, and where it is leading is unclear. Much has been written about Upshaw’s potential, and the fans are begging for him to get a chance, but whether he makes the team is up to Coach Byron Scott whose recent comments have been less than encouraging.

By now, Laker fans are familiar with Upshaw’s resume. Dismissed from two college programs for undisclosed infractions, though still projected to be a first round selection until health issues scared teams away shortly before the draft. When he went undrafted, and the Lakers selected guard D’Angelo Russell instead of big man Jahlil Okafor, the team swooped in quickly to sign Upshaw to their Summer League team. It was considered a brilliant move.

The Summer League did not go precisely as expected for Upshaw. He showed up overweight and had not played competitive basketball in months, but he held his own in early games first against first overall pick Karl Anthony Towns and then against Okafor. After the first game it was announced the Lakers would sign Upshaw to a contract.

However, following the 76ers game, Upshaw sat on the bench the rest of the summer and rarely saw the court. When Summer League ended, the Lakers stopped talking about him and no one knew what was happening.

When Mitch Kupchak was finally asked about Upshaw’s status, he was impassive, indicating that even if the Lakers decided to sign him, Upshaw did not figure into their plans for this season.

Then, just when it looked like his career with the Lakers was over before it started, he signed a partially guaranteed contract shortly before training camp opened. Upshaw gave an interview in which he said he lost 25 pounds and was ready to go.

Incidentally, whenever Upshaw is interviewed, he is articulate, appreciative for the opportunity to be with the team, and determined to improve and showcase his skills.

When training camp arrived, there were reports that he was moving well and blocking a lot of shots in practice. Still, Upshaw did not play at all in the first two preseason games, both of which the Lakers lost. His time finally arrived in the third contest against a formidable Toronto Raptors team.

This article is dumb. It sounds like it belongs on TMZ. Trying to stir up drama where there is none.

BScott doesn't appear to be dismissive but treating him like an I drafted rookie who has to earn PT

Could be that they are pursuing last year's Jordan Clarkson route

In your opinion. In my opinion, particularly the one interview I have in my mind, he seemed dismissive to me. Of course a rookie has to earn their stripes, I didn't start watching bball 5 minutes ago, but I can't recall him ever saying anything like what I heard about JC, Randle or DLo.

This is Scott for you. He often comments on games as if he never saw them. He either sees different things that most fans do. Or he really does not notice or plays some weird mind games.

I think the reporter is quite right to ask why after a good game does Scott not praise a rooky.

But I did not take Scotts comments as just negative. I think he started with "ton of mistakes" but then followed with acknowledging the progress and potential.

Then again, maybe I'm on the other extreme of wishful thinking.

Lakers pick up forward Julius Randle's third-year option
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

On Thursday, the Lakers picked up the third-year option on the contract of forward Julius Randle.

Randle's $3.3-million salary for the 2016-17 season is now fully guaranteed. The team also has an option next summer on his $4.1-million salary for 2017-18.

The Lakers selected Randle with the seventh overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. The Kentucky forward suffered a broken leg on opening night of his rookie season, ultimately missing the entire year.

Now healthy, Randle is projected to start for the Lakers this season as he has through five preseason games, averaging 12.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

The Lakers now have just $23.1 million in committed salaries for 2016-17.

Including a $1.2-million charge for future restricted free agent Jordan Clarkson, the Lakers project to have up to $62 million in cap space to spend on free agency.

Laker Hire Tracy Murray as Shooting Coach
by nba.com

Former Lakers player Tracy Murray has been hired by the team as a shooting coach it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak

In his position, Murray will work with head coach Byron Scott and his staff, focusing on improving the players shooting form and technique.

“I’ve known Tracy a long time, and he was one of the purest shooters I’ve ever seen,” said Scott. “I think he’ll be a benefit to our players, especially our young guys, and I look forward to working with him as a member of our staff.”

All of us have our own opinions

The bottom line is that Upshaw is an underrated rookie that hasn't played much competitive basketball while having a great deal of potential.

That he is getting some "run" means that Byron wants to see how much he has learn from the coaching along with working with others such as DLO, Clarkson, Hibbert, Randle and others.

Upshaw understands that he has a great opportunity. In preseason where players are battling for a roster spots, there is severe competition in practice.

To expect that Upshaw should be treated like drafted rookies such as DLO, Randle, Clarkson, Brown and Nance is wishful thinking. The axiom that the more (talent) one is given, the more responsibilities/expectations there are. As Big Game, Big Shot, Coop and others have stated ad naseum - one should be worried when the coaches are NOT criticizing you.
Note: there is no crying (or babying) in baseball - excuse me, in the NBA

I believe that Upshaw will make the roster - but.

Lamar Odom's condition weighs on Lakers, especially Kobe Bryant, World Peace
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

The Lakers returned to their home court Thursday, but their thoughts remained in Las Vegas, where former Laker Lamar Odom remained hospitalized.

“One of the first thoughts on my mind when I got here this morning,” Coach Byron Scott said, “was had anybody heard any differently about what’s going on with him?”

Kobe Bryant left the Lakers’ practice facility without speaking to reporters. He and General Manager Mitch Kupchak visited Odom at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center on Tuesday night.

“I think throughout the day we’re all thinking about him,” Scott said, “and we’re all wishing him the best and just praying, just praying for him.”

That’s especially true for Bryant, who played seven years alongside Odom. They were members of the Lakers’ last two championship teams in 2009 and 2010.

“He’s very close to Lamar,” Scott said. “Loves him like a brother. So, it’s just a rough time for Kobe dealing with that. This is probably the first time he’s had a teammate that’s gone through something like this.”

Bryant was the only Lakers player who made it to the hospital to visit Odom before the team flight left Las Vegas.

“Kobe’s amazing,” World Peace said. “Kobe left right after the game; he went to go visit Lamar and stayed there with him, and I thank him.”

Does Lakers Coach Byron Scott Dislike Robert Upshaw?
That's certainly the impression I get. I almost posted about it after seeing BScott be completely dismissive in his comments about Upshaw in a post-game interview.

That is Scott's MO. He was criticized in Cleveland for being too harsh on the young players in the media. I understand he wants to motivate the player but there is a fine balance.
