Byron Scott preaches patience with D’Angelo Russell
by Evan Barnes - dailynews.com

Two games into his rookie season, D’Angelo Russell’s play has become as much a topic of discussion as the Lakers’ struggles as a team.

Russell, the No. 2 pick in last summer’s draft, has as many assists (four) as turnovers. But after scoring 13 points and only turning the ball over once Friday night against Sacramento, Lakers coach Byron Scott said Russell showed fewer nerves and more improvement, especially in his decision-making.

“He’s 19 years old and played in two professional games. It’s going to take a while to understand what this league is all about,” Scott said.

Kobe Bryant said Friday night that Russell’s struggles reminded him of his own rookie year as an 18-year-old mostly coming off the bench in limited minutes. While Scott, who played alongside Bryant that year, said Bryant being a reserve was different than Russell being a starter and the primary ballhandler, he did see similarities, mainly with age and expectations.

“It’s very rare for a guy at 18 or 19 to come in and light it up,” Scott said.

Russell is not the only young player going through struggles. Julius Randle followed his double-double in the season opener with a quieter outing Friday as he battled foul trouble.

It reminded Scott of his own difficulties as a rookie, when he realized “this was a different game than college.” While Scott empathized with his team’s growing pains and preached patience, he also said his players must continue to work and come together.

It’s too early to label Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell as next Sam Bowie
by Jason Jones - sacbee.com

D’Angelo Russell has played only two NBA games. But some are in a rush to make him his generation’s Sam Bowie.

Karl-Anthony Towns was the consensus first overall pick entering June’s NBA draft, and Minnesota snatched him at No. 1.

The Lakers selected Russell, a 6-foot-5 guard said to be the best passer available, instead of big man Jahlil Okafor, believed to be the most NBA-ready player. Philadelphia, picking third, gladly added him to its collection of big men.

And since summer league, Russell has shown fewer flashes of greatness than those picked around him. The scrutiny Russell has been under in some cases appears to be more about the Lakers’ inability to sign a marquee free agent, making Russell the team’s biggest acquisition.

It’s too early to make Russell a trivia question similar to Bowie, who was picked second overall by Portland in 1984 between Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan. Bowie, a center, was plagued by injuries during a 10-year NBA career.

The Lakers have hitched their future to Russell. But he’ll be linked to Okafor, who had 26 points in his debut but 10 points in his next showing.

When Byron Scott, was asked if he followed the play of Towns or Okafor closely, the Lakers’ coach said: “Not really. Why should I? I hope both of those guys – and I think they will – have great careers. But why should I care what they do? I care about what our guy does and what our team does. I don’t look at Philly; I don’t look at Minnesota; I don’t look at other teams. It’s not my concern.”

Russell had 13 points and two assists in 23 minutes as a starter in Friday’s loss to Sacramento and hasn’t made the splash other rookies have.

Then again, he’s played only two games.

TDIKH: November 1, 2002
by nba.com

The fourth game of the 2002-03 season was a classic go-prove-something night for Kobe Bryant.

Fresh off of back-to-back-to-back championships, the Lakers had dropped each of the year’s first two games as Shaquille O’Neal recovered from surgery on his right big toe.

While some questioned whether Bryant could carry the load, he took it out on the Clippers by leading a 108-93 victory by stitching together the fourth triple-double of his career.

Bryant poured in 33 points, while shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 8-of-8 at the free throw line. He also got his teammates involved, with all five starters and reserve Slava Medvedenko finishing in double figures thanks, in part, to Bryant’s 12 assists — despite O’Neal and Rick Fox (suspension) being unavailable.

But the 24-year-old Bryant’s biggest contribution may have actually been on the glass, where he collected a then career-high 15 rebounds, including five offensive boards.

Robert Upshaw and Michael Frazier on D-Fenders' training camp roster
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

The D-Fenders on Saturday announced the 16 players who will be invited to their training camp, including two recently cut from the Lakers' roster -- center Robert Upshaw and guard Michael Frazier.

The two will represent the Lakers as affiliate players but are still technically NBA free agents, able to sign with any of the league's 30 franchises.

Upshaw and Frazier are joined by former Lakers guards Vander Blue and Manny Harris, who are both returning players for the D-Fenders.

Lakers Need To Clear Things Up
by Keith Rivas - lasportshub.com

The Sacramento Kings, as you probably know, aren’t one of the NBA’s powerhouse franchises at the moment.

If anything, they’re an emerging squad, still looking for their identity in many ways — a lot like the Lakers we see right now.

Unfortunately, that middle ground team was able to score 132 points in four quarters of regulation against the Lakers.

That’s not a good sign for things to come if something doesn’t change.

Think about it — the Lakers still have yet to play the high-powered Clippers and Warriors.

If they were to play with that same style of defense, can you imagine how many points they might allow?

150? Worse? That can’t happen — you just can’t win games like that.
