Lakers likely to keep Byron Scott during 2015-16 season
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

His star player has kept trying to fight Father Time with little success. His NBA lottery picks have accepted unexpected bench roles publicly, but admittedly expressed initial frustration.

He has also overseen the Lakers’ worst start in franchise history, a 123-122 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday at Target Center marking the team’s fourth consecutive loss as the Western Conference’s worst team.

But Byron Scott still has enough support from Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and vice president of player personnel Jim Buss that he is expected to coach through the rest of the 2015-16 season, according to team sources familiar with the situation. With Scott signing a four-year, $17 million deal last summer, the Lakers plan to evaluate his future once the 2015-16 season ends, according to a team source.

The Lakers are not happy with the persistent losing, obviously. But Kupchak and Buss sympathize with Scott on handling what one team source called “a no-win situation.”

On one hand, Scott has felt pressure to handle Bryant’s workload in his 20th and final NBA season. Scott remains mindful of Bryant’s struggles, averaging 16.2 points per game average on 30.6-percent shooting in 31.3 minutes per game.

But out of respect for Bryant’s extensive accomplishments that have spanned five NBA championships and his current retirement tour, the Lakers have understood Scott’s tendency to lean on him heavily. They are also mindful of the challenge it takes to manage Bryant’s competitive nature.

“I want him to enjoy this as much as possible,” Scott said of Bryant. “You’ve never seen him smile as much on the basketball court or talk to his opponents as much as he’s done the last two or three weeks. He’s at a very good place in his life and his career.”

5 Things Front Office Should Tell Byron Scott
by Cody Williams - lakeshowlife.com

The Lakers front office is set to meet with Byron Scott and these five things should be on the agenda

Amidst the Los Angeles Lakers continuing to lose games in the 2015-16 NBA season and with the criticism still raining down on Lakers head coach Byron Scott, news broke earlier this week that the front office in Los Angeles plans to meet with Scott when the team returns from their road trip this coming week.

According to the reports about the meeting between the front office and head coach being set, the talk at this convention of Lakers brass will largely center around player development. However, with all of the decisions that Scott has made over the course of this season, perhaps the talks should be a little more expansive.

Scott’s coaching has been questionable from the start of the season. He’s been poor at making adjustments, his choice of rotations has been suspect, and his choice of lineups to finish games has been frustrating. All of this must be addressed by the front office, even if things like having too many veterans on the roster are the fault of the front office.

If Byron is going to be around for the rest of the season, which reports seem to indicate that he will be, then the front office needs to make sure that Scott has his head screwed on right in terms of the organization’s goals for this season. As a result, these are five things that must be discussed with Scott at the upcoming meeting.

Metta World Peace blames Mike D'Antoni's system for 2012-13 Lakers failure
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

The 2012-13 Los Angeles Lakers were one of the most disappointing teams in not just Lakers history, but NBA history as well. The Lakers acquired a still healthy Steve Nash in a fourth of July firework of a sign and trade, and followed up that move by acquiring disgruntled center Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic to add to a core of Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol that had just won an NBA title two years before. The team was projected to be a historically dominant team, and things were supposed to be fun.

Pretty much the opposite of fun was what happened. Howard was never fully healthy, Steve Nash only lasted two games before breaking his leg, Mike Brown was fired five games in, and Kobe Bryant was lost for the rest of the year after tearing his Achilles tendon late in the season while the Lakers pushed for the playoffs.

With Bryant and Howard facing off once again on Saturday night, fellow 2012-13 Laker Metta World Peace was asked what he thought was the downfall of that much-hyped outfit, and he did not list any of the reasons above:

On Lakers' 2012-13 season, Metta cast more blame on Mike D'Antoni's system than Kobe/Dwight personality clashes.

Byron Scott Vows To Change Pitch To Free Agents
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers failed to bring in a big-name free agent once again this past summer. Four-time NBA All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge appeared to be seriously considering signing with the Lakers in free agency, but wasn’t thrilled with their pitch that failed to focus on the basketball side of things.

Ultimately, Aldridge signed with the San Antonio Spurs and the Lakers were left with limited options in free agency. The weak pitch made by the front office was a major wake-up call for the organization and something that head coach Byron Scott claims will change drastically moving forward.

According to Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times, Coach Scott vows to change the team’s pitch in free agency with much more focus on basketball:

“Most of these guys want to know the basketball part of it. We’ll change that part as far as most of the meeting, 75% of it or more, will be about the basketball part and then the other part will be a little bit about the business part,” Scott said.

“I think we found from a great player that he was more interested in the basketball on-the-court stuff than anything else.”

I hate how they're putting together a cookie-cutter presentation for free agents. It should be tailored to the specific free agent they're going after.

The Spurs knew full well that Aldridge wasn't an attention-seeking guy so they just had Pop, Duncan, TP and Manu in a private hotel suite. Dr. Buss had the GOAT PG call up Gary Payton and Shaq call up Malone. There is no one presentation that fits all free agents.

I don't really care about Byron at this point. It's the Kobe show right now, Kobe is going to enjoy his tour. I just hope the young players can at least get some time to gain some experience. GOtta forget about Byron and focus on enjoying KObe chuck this last season. Byron is gone with Kobe at the end of April. I am good

Mitch Kupchak - D'Angelo Russell will be a 'very, very, very, very good player'
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

Watching rookie guard D'Angelo Russell score career highs of 23 and 24 points in consecutive games was a not a surprise for Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

Despite a slow start from the team's second overall pick in June's NBA draft, Kupchak has a lot of confidence in Russell as a prospect.

"There's never a doubt, when we scouted him last year and when we drafted him and worked him out, that he was going to be a very, very, very, very good player in this league," Kupchak said in a live chat on Lakers.com. "That's our feeling all along."

"He did not have a very good summer league and I think that was a wakeup call for him," Kupchak said.

"He wasn't in the best of shape this summer," continued Kupchak. "Since camp, he's gained more and more and more confidence. If you watch the last three or four games, you would say he looks to be a different player -- certainly than he was in summer league, but even very different than what he was in training camp."

Russell averaged 8.5 points a game over the first games in October, then 10.7 in November and 15.1 halfway through December. His assists have climbed from 2.0 to 3.1 to 3.6 over that same stretch, as have his steals (0.0, 1.0 to 1.5).

While his field goal percentage is hovering at 40.2%, Russell's three-point shot has improved from 25% to 32.1% to 34%.

"His gift is being able to deliver the ball and see the floor. I think he will also score," said Kupchak. "I think he'll rebound at a high level for a guard. I think there'll be a lot of games in his career where he'll be a triple-double threat."

Kupchak wants Russell to do more than just adapt to the speed of the NBA, but take control of how fast he and the Lakers play.

"It's not only just figuring out the pace of the game. As a ball-handling guard, you can dictate the pace of the game and that's something we think he can do," Kupchak said.

D'Angelo Russell will return to reserve role with Lakers despite his recent progress
by Broderick Turner - latimes.com

Although D'Angelo Russell showed noticeable progress when he returned to the starting lineup the last two games, the Lakers' rookie point guard will be back on the bench Tuesday night.

It's not punishment, Coach Byron Scott said, it's just that second-year guard Jordan Clarkson was able to practice Monday after missing two games because of a sprained right ankle and is healthy enough to play Tuesday against the Milwaukee Bucks at Staples Center.

Scott made a dramatic change to his starting lineup four games ago, making Russell and Julius Randle reserves and starting Lou Williams and Larry Nance Jr. in their places during the team's eight-game trip.

Scott said he will start Clarkson and Williams again in the backcourt together and start Nance at power forward.

"I don't know if it'll bother him [Russell] or not, but he's 19 years old, so it probably will," Scott said, with a laugh, after practice. "But I'm going to tell him, 'Listen, the last couple of games you played really well and even the game before that you played really well when that starting lineup was Jordan and Lou.' But then Jordan got hurt so obviously he gets a lot more time.

"It hasn't changed. I'm still going to go back to the [previous] starting lineup . . . and see how he reacts. And I hope that he'll come out and play the same way he's been playing."

TDIKH: December 14, 2014
by nba.com

With a single free throw, Kobe Bryant passed his boyhood idol in the NBA’s record books.

Bryant knocked down a foul shot late in the first half of L.A.’s 100-94 win in Minnesota to pass Michael Jordan (32,292) for third on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

The Timberwolves stopped the action to present him with the game ball, much to the approval of the opposing crowd.

“You get there and the crowd’s really waiting to see you score nine points, so don’t (mess) this up and completely kill the moment,” Bryant told reporters after the game.

Instead, Bryant made the moment and many more that night. With the game tied at 94 and just 62 seconds remaining, he drained a 26-foot 3-pointer to put the Lakers up for good.

Bryant finished the game with 26 points and received praise from legends like Jordan and Magic Johnson.

“That’s the most important thing to me, is playing for the respect of the greats and feeling like I’m a part of that culture and a part of that brotherhood,” Bryant said.

Byron Scott has development plan
By Robert Morales - dailynews.com

It was recently reported by this newspaper that Lakers coach Byron Scott might soon sit down with general manager Mitch Kupchak and perhaps vice president of player personnel Jim Buss to talk about how Scott plans on going about developing the young players.

Scott on Monday at practice said that conversation took place with Kupchak during the just-concluded eight-game road trip; the Lakers went 1-7 to fall to 3-21.

“We talked when we were on the road and just talked about some of the things we’ve been doing, what we’re trying to do with the guys, and we’re just going to continue to do it,” said Scott, whose team plays host to the Milwaukee Bucks (10-15) tonight at Staples Center. The Bucks handed the Golden State Warriors their first loss on Saturday.

“The one thing with these guys that we’re trying to do is just keep banging it in their heads how important it is to keep that work ethic, keep working hard,” Scott said. “And Kobe (Bryant), obviously, if these guys really have watched him in his career, he is the poster child when it comes to working out and making sure that you’re ready to play every single night. We’re trying to instill that in our young guys right now.”

That’s not all Scott is trying to hammer into the heads of his young players.

“The other thing with them we’re trying to instill is just team basketball,” he said. “They’re so used to having the ball in their hands wherever they’ve been and if they don’t have it, they go get it. And I’m trying to teach them spacing and just staying away and letting other people play.

“So that’s kind of the trick with them right now is just trying to break old habits that they’ve had since they probably were 9, 10 years old and get them to understand this level of basketball is totally different.”

Mitch Kupchak gives update on the state of the Lakers, D'Angelo Russell, Kobe Bryant and more
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

Mitch Kupchak gave a wide-sweeping update on where the Lakers are currently.

Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak held a live discussion on the current state of the franchise, hitting every major point of a disappointing season. Lakers sideline reporter Mike Trudell moderated the Lakers Voices chat, taking questions from social media as Kupchak went over a wide range of topics, including Kobe Bryant, the new core, Byron Scott's performance and more. His biggest focus was on D'Angelo Russell and a group of young prospects he is "very encouraged" by.

Mitch reiterated that the development of Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson and Russell remains an area they want to continue focusing on, but that there's also importance in balancing Kobe Bryant's final season. "Knowing that you're not going to get into the playoffs, and knowing that Kobe's not going to be here a year from now, it makes you want to focus, as a manager, on the young players," Kupchak said when asked about how the two very different sides of the season are coming together. "But the reality is Kobe, although he's not going to be here next year, he will be with us for the rest of the year. This is his twentieth season, and he's just had a ridiculous career."

"We're trying to focus on the young group, but Kobe deserves a large degree of respect for what he's accomplished."

Kupchak pointed out the last three games for the Lakers as signs of the team heading in the direction they're hoping for as they transition. He cited the overtime loss in Minnesota, when Bryant made the case to coach Scott to let the young core finish the game, as a major stepping stone through the first stretch of the season. Still, he also made sure to point out the disappointment with the current record, hoping to have more wins with their re-worked roster.

Lakers Must Commit To Rebuild
by Keith Rivas - lasportshub.com

If push comes to shove, the LA Lakers can bank one more time on the NBA Draft.

Seriously, though, that’s not out of the question.

D’Angelo Russell and Julius Randle are continuing to mature and find their stride with the Lakers, but even with them on the floor, Los Angeles might need more at it’s disposal.

Thankfully for them, the next clean cut crop of college basketball talent — headlined, of course, by Ben Simmons of LSU — will provide nothing short of top-tier players.

And with how things are going so far, and if they’re any indication of how the rest of the season will play out, we can count on the Lakers to be part of the lottery draft…again.

Picking up D’Angelo Russell was nothing short of a steal, though, and they were right to pick him up over Jahlil Okafor or other prospects at the time.

Okafor’s been struggling heavily with off-the-court issues, and those kinds of things would be way too much for a team like the Lakers to handle right now.

It hasn’t been something the 76ers have been able to put a complete stop to yet, and in the short run it makes Philadelphia look like the mastermind of making bad draft decisions.

But hey, better them than us, right?

Scott should take hammer and use it on himself.

To learn that working smart always beats working hard.

I personally have trouble seeing much "smartness" in what Scott is doing.

What if Steve Kerr, Luke Walton, Budenholzer, or Pop stated the following quote:
