These jerks are notorious for giving the customer a hard time when cancelling. Anyone have any cool ideas in mind for me to say when I call so I can piss them off and FORCE them to hang up the phone and cancel my account?

Just tell them you signed a 12 month contract with someone else.

Yea i actually heard that, and I have signed a 12 month contract with someone else. Good thing i didnt use a credit card when i signed up for their free trial, which i never used by the way. Aren't they legally obligated to cancel once I say cancel and then hang up the phone?

I once had my wife cancel 5 AOL accounts of mine at once (don't ask, the accounts had never been used). It wasn't a pleasant experience for her, but I don't think it was terrible either. There is absolutely nothing you can do to guarantee that they will cancel it except to continue bothering them if they don't.

Just tell them you are selling your computer and you won't need internet anymore.

They will offer you free months to stay. DON'T take it, tell them you don't need free months when you have no computer.

Get a cancellation number after you're done! Just incase they continue charging you, you can get the charges reversed if you have a cancellation number.

Good luck, and don't back down from the agent.

AOL is free now if you have a high speed connection. If youre still paying, tell them you work from home now and your company hooked up a connection. They cant argue that. Use the same excuse when cancelling cell phones.

I have heard AOL is a nightmare to get rid of.
I had a guy once try to sell me Credit Card insurance for a good 5 minutes
(MC) when all I wanted to do was a balance transfer. I told him No at least 10 times. The guy just wouldnt take no for an answer.

I just called and the guy was very nice. I asked him if they changed their policies and he just laughed and said yeah. It took me less than 5 minutes to cancel my account, no BS questions no nothing, well except for that damn automated menu that takes you all over the place and a brief conversation with some guy in India, it went smoothly.

Get the persons info before you discuss anything, such as name and position. Then proceed to tell them to cancel your service, when they ask why, say because they want it cancled. Before they can say anything also say you don't want any comps you want it completly cancled. Then before you hang up, let them know if it is not cancled and you are charged any more fees on your card. you will hold them responsible and sue them. I can't believe you are asking how to cancel a bill.

AOL is notorious for being bad about cancelling, which is the purpose of the thread. And you aren't going to scare some dude in India or AOL with threats of lawsuits.

Me either - hated them from the begining. They had quite a scam going as the "portal" to the Internet providing very minimal value for what you could get for free from Yahoo or even Excite or InfoSeek back in the day.

I'd be interested in looking at the demographics of their current customer base. I'd bet most of the folks are older and thought the shiny disk they got in the mail was the only way to connect to the this Internet thing. Or they're folks that had it from a long time ago and didn't want to change their email addresses. I finally managed to pry my parents off awhile ago. My dad had simply associated the Internet with AOL and didn't realize he could get everything he was paying for (except connectivity) for free.

They stopped billing me and automatically canceled when they didn't receive any payments after 6 months, then I just had to deal with a collection agency. I was 18 so I had no regards for my credit (I was so stupid then, now I can't qualify for any credit ) what men do for porn

its not as bad as you think..... because we only pay 20 bucks for unlimited access....and my wireless modem cost only 30 bucks a month which normally cost around 80 dollars so all in all i am only paying 50 bucks a month for High Speed internet access with AOL which i guess is a little bit above average.... and my SN has been the same for the past 10 years so I really dont want to change it

Tell them if they don't cancel your account, you'll send Dick Cheney over there to take them hunting for cattle. Imply that the rest of the party will be comprised of (heavily armed) Pakistanis. They should be scared/ offended enough to make you go away.

Bah, that's too far to go for a joke/scare. Just call the guy on the phone a Paki and be done with it.

Emails and SNs are now free. You don't need to pay AOL to keep your email address.

I actually just got a new computer and hadn't purchased internet yet (new residence), so i popped in a free AOL cd so i could use their service for a couple days before i ordered up real internet (since it takes a week for atnt to ship the modem and everything), and i never game em a credit card, but i never ended up using it anyways. Ain't no way in hell i'd pay for AOL, the only reason ppl go on there is to chat in those freaky ass chatrooms.

Perhaps that is why they are planning to lay off 5,000 employees right now.

You don't need to give them an excuse....just tell them you want to cancel. If they ask why, tell them none of your business.

I went through a terrible ordeal a few years back. I got three months free and unfortunately they got my credit card number. They charged me for three months and refused to give me back my money. I asked to talk to a supervisor and he also refused. I asked to talk to his supervisor and he said no. On top of that, they still refused to close my account. At one point they were almost yelling at me.

I vowed to NEVER do business with aol ever again.
