Yeah had incredible talent and failed miserably. Great coach.

Speaking of Utah I really wanted to see a rematch with that team in the 2000 conference finals. I was rooting really hard for them against Portland but Portland didn't have much trouble with them. The Lakers and Jazz (especially the Jazz) had a lot of the same players from the 97 and 98 playoffs. 2000 was the first year that I felt confident the Lakers would take them. Utah won 55 games and was weaker than the teams in previous years.

Only reason a rookie Kobe even played all those minutes in that Utah series was because Del just hated Van Exel even more. He even had Van Exel demoted and come off the bench.

Nobody said that Del was a great coach, just that he was much better than Byron.

True statement.

IIRC, the coach was told to play Kobe, more than what he was playing by the FO. The FO being J.Buss.

Consistently getting into the playoffs with a rebuilding team is failing miserably. Got it. And getting deep into the playoffs with a talented team is also failing I assume?

He was terrible. I am sure he was a nice guy but him and Rambis were in way over their heads and Phil Jackson was a welcome change and an obvious upgrade big time.
