N. Korea in retaliation of the military exercises but this kid could serve as a poster child to people who are stupid to go there.

Just saw this on the news. The trail was a sham and lasted under an hour.

Hopefully, we can do something to get him out.

Why? He shouldn't have gone to north korea. And he really shouldn't have stolen something after getting there.

It's his own fault. I am siding with north korea on this one

Harsh for stealing a banner. Sucks for the guy. Maybe NK will be liberated before he serves his entire 15 years.

The US State Department warns people not to visit there and they still go....
These guys end up as propaganda tools for the NK regime. Sucks, but maybe this will teach others not to go there....doubt it though.

His fault for going there. Even more his fault for trying to snag a souvenir. I hope our government doesn't waste our resources on trying to get him back.

The penalty for possessing crack is harsh compared to possessing cocaine. The penalty for repeated DUI's is relatively light. We have the strong arm of justice that really came down on affluenza boy. We have Adnan Syed sitting in jail for over 15 years for a crime that he likely did not commit. It's not like our justice system is a model of perfection.

look at the bright side, at least there won't be any big bubba waiting for him in his N. Korean jail cell. Jared from Subway would willing to swap place with this guy in a heart beat

I get the not traveling to North Korea part. No way in hell I would ever go there, but 15 years for stealing a banner?! That's ludicrous.

Of course it is an inappropriate sentence, but you're dealing with a cynical, paranoid regime that looks for excuses to seize American tourists.

I hope he's released as a calculated, goodwill gesture, but he dug his own grave.

At least he wasn't deported back to the United States on American Airlines' new sub-economy class.

Why would anyone want to go to Korea?

Went to S Korea when I was in the service. IIRC it was a refueling port on the way to Japan.

It was winter. It was so cold if you spit on the deck of the ship it would ice up and roll. From where we were docked all I saw was a drab poverty stricken country.

Although Warmbie is most likely a innocent kid looking for adventure he should have known better.

I hope we can do something to get him out of his sentence.

That's because you went during the 60s, old timer. A lot of economic development took place the last 50+ years in South Korea. Back then the North had brighter economic prospects than they do today.

SK has left Japan in the dust far as electronics go in the last 15 years.

IA Stupidity shouldn't be rewarded but 15 years hard labor is way out of line for the infraction.

I think Kim's gonna hit us up for something to return Warmbie.

Someone give Trump a one way ticket, quick!

It'll give him a first hand look at how brutal a dictatorial regime can be and it'll add invaluable foreign policy experience to his stark fp resume.

Plus the guy's a fervent admirer of the fat bastard son of Kim Jong Il (quite literally as KJU's mother Ko Yong-Hui is of Japanese descent). What could possibly go wrong?

Nothing about justice in North Korea is just and fair.
Stupid college kid picked one of the worst places on Earth to act dumb.

I feel bad for the kid, but his IQ is questionable at best.

North Korea is not the place to pull a fraternity prank or whatever he was doing. Honestly, it is a harsh sentence but sometimes the herd needs to be thinned. Maybe he can write a book about it.
