Miami Heat All-Star forward Chris Bosh is expected to meet with doctors on Thursday to determine the seriousness of blood clotting in his left calf and whether the use of blood thinners could allow him to return this season, league sources told The Vertical.

Bosh, an 11-time All-Star, met with Heat physicians on Monday in Miami and will get further evaluation on Thursday, sources said. There was more optimism in Miami on Monday than during All-Star weekend in Toronto that Bosh's condition could be manageable, league sources said.

Damn I hope its not as serious as the one he had last season.

Not good to have this twice within a year, because he's likely been on blood thinners now since he had the first one.

Damn Chris. I feel you man... This scroll just went across the screen while I'm trying to re-watch the All Star game (and not fall asleep this time).

The blood clot is scary, but the treatment is too. I survived a blood clot last year and I still have physical repercussions from it although the clot itself is gone. But that medicine and the side effects were some of the worst mess I've ever had to deal with in my life. I hope Chris isn't one of those folks who has to stay on those meds for the rest of his life

1st blood clot = blood thinners ~ 6 months. 2nd blood clot earns you lifelong treatment (or a filter to prevent an embolism to the lungs). Most likely he's going to be on the lifelong treatment...which in my opinion would make playing basketball a highly dangerous sport for him. One hard elbow to the head or a bad fall to the ground can have dangerous results. Will be interesting to see what happens.

This (bleep) is serious.

I hope he doesn't rush into playing. He needs to evaluate his condition and consult with a lot of people (and doctors).

That's what I have been wondering/worried about.

I was on the oh so wonderfully ridiculous warfarin (Coumadin). Are the newer blood thinners any better? I seriously cannot imagine taking warfarin for the rest of my life.

Career over. You cannot play contact sports on blood thinners.

With Coumadin you have to go in about once or twice a month to get your blood tested. With the newer drugs like you see on commercials (Xarelto) you don't need to have your blood tested so some people prefer that. However if you are on blood thinners it's probably a good idea to know how thin your blood is just in case anything happens. Also, the newer drugs, there aren't really any antidotes yet to reverse the effects in the event of a serious bleed. Coumadin is still the gold standard.

Bummer to hear, I just saw one of his commercials with Arnold Palmer and Kevin Nealon. I am glad he is putting health first and basketball second. It is very serious, a blood clot took out my dad when he was only 46.

Chris Bosh, Heat Have Received Differing Opinions On How Soon He Can Play

Quote:
Chris Bosh remains hopeful of returning to game action this season but he can only do so once he's not on blood thinners.

Bosh's blood clot in his calf has dissipated but he's still on blood thinners.

The Miami Heat and Bosh have received different medical opinions on how soon he can play once ending the medication.

Some doctors recommend staying on blood thinners for three to six months after a clot develops but that's not a unanimous view.

He's the one guy who looks depressed to be in said commercial, too.
