Sleepy Sunday… If you ate a big meal today, you were probably struggling to stay awake watching this one. A sleepy Sunday night performance by the Lakers.

Outside of Kobe and Russell, no one could hit a shot with any consistency.

“I just feel we didn’t have any zip tonight,” Scott said of the 101-88 loss to the Wizards.

He looked at the reporter’s tape recorders. “Who’s is this one?” Scott asked. He wanted to take one so he could record himself so he didn’t have to repeat the same post game speeches and answers in the press conferences.

Someone asked if he still has the team’s attention.

“I feel they are hearing it. They are just not applying it,” Scott said.

Kobe -- The “We want Kobe” chants in the fourth were about as loud as the crowd was getting tonight. Scott didn’t put him back out there as the lead was ballooning to 20+. He had a strong first half, sinking three threes and leading the team in scoring. Just 2 points in the second half and he sat after his first stint. Just a few games left for No. 24. “I think we got 4 home games left? That’s kind of crazy,” Kobe said, mentioning he didn’t realize that until tipoff. Asked if he was going to play every game the rest of the season, he said yes. The press also asked if he would miss the postgame interviews at his locker. He said probably, but the one he will always remember was standing there after tearing his achilles. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-15 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He drained a wing three for the Lakers first score. He sank a pull-up wing three in transition. He missed a third attempt from three. He choked a layup after blowing past his man. He airballed a wing three, not getting fully set to fire. He got his legs into his next one and swished the sideline three. He missed a turnaround in the post. Way short on a baseline turnaround. He missed a wing three in transition. He turned the corner on his man and scored the And-1 layup down the lane, he made the FT. He made a tech FT. He was stripped on a drive. He swished a wing jumper after curling around the screens to take the pass. He missed an open sideline three. He had 15 points on 5-12 shooting (3-7 from three). Second Half: He iso’d and missed the wing jumper. He swished a short pull-up in the lane. He lost his man on a spin move and biffed the easy layup. He spotted Hibbert cross court for the jumper. He lost the ball on the drive and wanted the foul.

Clarkson -- -- Poor game from Clarkson. You knew this was a bad one when Wall airballed on one end Clarkson answered with an airball of his own on the other. JC scored his first points with 6 minutes left in the game. “I just got to find things to do…just try to stay active and engaged in the game,” Clarkson said when his shot is not falling. He mentioned getting boards, steals and setting up teammates. Just no mojo going early on. You got to make your own mojo out there with those scrappy plays. “He’s still making some of the same mistakes he made last year,” Scott said. He mentioned it may take 3-4 years of experience to get consistent. “We’ve got to start on the defensive end. That’s where our mindset has got to be,” Clarkson said. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-7 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He pushed out the break and lost control of the ball. He missed a deep three way short. He coughed up the ball on the perimeter, score the other way. He missed a corner three. Wild miss on a drive. He answered Wall’s airball with an airball three of his own. He fumbled a Randle pass under the hoop and then missed the floater. He held onto the ball a fraction of a second long trying to dunk the ball at the end of the half instead of going for the layup, oops, no points for you. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He scored a layup on the backdoor lob from Marcelo, his first score. He charged on a pass off.

Russell -- -- Hey pushed through the injury and they paid close attention to how he looked in his first stint. He and Kobe were scoring early and often, so they let Russell go for the night. He had 12 points in the first half on 50% shooting, but made just 3 of 10 in the second half. Still, some nice moments and good to see him bounce back quickly after that sprain. He didn’t seem too affected by it. He had a nice full-court drive through multiple defenders in traffic for an And-1. (I would love to see more of that.) But it showed his wheels were doing all right. Defensively, he had 3 steals. That’s his 12th game he’s had 3 or more steals this year. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-20 shooting (3-7 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He pulled out an offensive board and drained the wing three. He beat a couple players to a loose ball, attacked and hit the floater in the lane. He surveyed the floor in early offense and drained the three. He missed a pull-up jumper at the FT line. He posted up and missed the fallaway short. He swiped a pass on the two-man D on the other end. He attacked off the three line, around the D and hit the leaner. He missed a wing three. He got tapped on a post turnaround. He missed a three. He swished a long leaning jumper from the wing. He had 12 points on 5-10 shooting and 1 assist. Second Half: He missed a pull-up 20-footer to start the second half. He missed a leaner on a probe, got it back and finished the shorter one. He found Kobe for the short jumper. He missed a fade on the baseline. He missed a sideline three up against the shotclock. Nice speed pushing the ball down court, through multiple defenders and he scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed the pull-up 16-footer working off the wing screen. He intercepted a pass at midcourt. He missed a three off the motion-weak. He airballed a runner. He drew FTs getting undercut from behind off the pull-up jumper, he made both. He was picked from behind unaware of a closing help defender. He sank a three working off the high screen on the wing.

Randle -- -- Not his usual rebounding numbers. “It just didn’t fall my way. I didn’t go get them tonight,” Randle said. He had just 1 rebound in the first half. It’s amazing that a 7 rebound game is an off night for him. He had an efficient scoring night, finishing decently around the rim. The passing game wasn’t there at all. The team shot poorly, but the ball wasn’t moving in this one. The Lakers lost the break 24-15. Wish we had a few more moments of him pushing it up tonight. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-11 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a 19-footer on our first possession. He sank a FT jumper off a Kobe feed. He tracked down a loose ball and sank the corner jumper. He drained a turnaround 13-footer on iso. He swiped a pass and was fouled on the pushout. Second Half: He faced up, attacked right and scored the layup. He missed a challenged turnaround on iso. He charged on a pass off. He missed a three trailing the break. He grabbed an airball and powered in a layup. He reversed on the break off the nice Russell-Clarkson-Randle passing sequence. He got tapped on a drive, got it back and slammed.

Hibbert -- -- The Lakers didn’t block a shot tonight. If you want some easy points in transition, it’s nice to get a few blocks to get you out on the break. Roy’s been just flat all season. A few good preseason games and that appears to be all from him this year. Nothing worth noting tonight, a bunch of fouls. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 steal and 5 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a short bank in the post. Nice strip in transition to save a dunk. He missed a baseline jumper. Second Half: He sank a baseline jumper on the cross-court feed from Kobe.

Williams -- -- This is one of those games where it shows you can’t just judge Lou’s scoring effectiveness by looking at shooting percentage. He couldn’t hit a three in 6 attempts and made just 1 shot in 7 attempts for the night. Still, he finished with 11 points with his craftiness getting to the line. Not sure if Clarkson will ever pick up on it, but Lou can still manage double-digit scoring even if he’s having a bad shooting night just by manufacturing points from the line. Something the young guys can learn from. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 1-7 shooting (0-6 from three, 9-10 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He got tied up on the perimeter for a jumpball. He missed a corner jumper. He missed a corner three. He attacked to his right, drew a reach and chucked to earn FTs, he made both. He reach another perimeter reach and FTs, he made both. He up-faked, leaned in and drew three FTs on the foul, he made all three FTs. He tried to thread the needle in a crowd and was picked off. Second Half: He attacked in transition and hit the runner. He missed a three coming off the pindown. He missed a wing three. He missed a sideline three. He got tapped on a 40-foot attempt at the buzzer. He felt a bump and chucked a two-handed, over-the-head attempt at the rim to draw FTs on a three, he made two. He was stripped on the sideline.

Nance -- -- Good job deflecting pass and coming up with steals. He had a couple of dunks, including a nice one off the two-man game with Huertas. They played him at PF and SF again tonight. Good to see the 27 minutes. Nance banged knees in the fourth and was in pain for a little bit. He won’t play tomorrow, but that was planned before this game. He said he feels fine. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 4 steals and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a one-hander down the middle of the lane. He missed a wide open wing jumper. He slammed off the interior feed from Bass. He fumbled away an interior feed from Lou. Second Half: He cleaned up a missed layup. He hit a jumphook in the lane. He missed a long wing jumper. He attacked off the dribble to his right and drew FTs. He tracked down a loose ball, pushed it out with speed and fed Huertas for the layup. He took a pass from Huertas on the wing, stretched back and hammered.

Bass -- -- Wow. Very quiet night for Bass. Usually, I’ve got a decent amount of notes, but barely anything. He had a few offensive boards and some nice interior feeds, but not a lot of impact. He led the team with a team-low -17. Worthy talking about the young guys need to be professional. Some of the vets tonight looked done. The Stats: The Action: He hit Nance with an interior feed for the dunk. Second Half: He came up short trying to put in an airball.

Huertas -- -- The Wizards were content to make him a scorer versus a passer tonight. That made for some sloppy passing from Huertas as they sat back in the passing lanes, thus the 4 turnovers. He had a couple nice sequences with Black and Nance for dunks in the fourth during a mini-run. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 3 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He drew a clear-out foul in transition D. He probed, hesitated and then scored the layup high off glass. He was stripped on the perimeter for a layup the other way. He tried to thread a soft pass over the D and it was picked off. He missed a drive. Nice help D on a shot challenge from behind that he swatted off the backboard, but they called him for a foul. Really bad lob pass into a crowd, turnover. Second Half: He missed a short bank. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He got tapped on a reverse. His jump pass was easily picked off. He banked in a leaner from the left side. He scored a layup filling the lane for Nance who was pushing out the break. He worked the two-man game with Black for the slam. He sank a three when the D went under the screen. He hooked a pass to Nance who threw it down with a massive dunk.

Kelly -- -- There have been moments in bad games this season where the crowd loses its patience with Kelly. He seems to have timely miscues where the groans start to turn into boo’s. That happened again in the fourth when he dribble the ball off his foot for a turnover. Pretty much nothing minutes from Kelly. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He deflected a cross-court pass to get a stop. He missed a wide open wing three. He posted up a smaller man and didn’t hit rim. He attacked, spun and was stripped easily. Second Half: He airballed a long three. He dribbled a ball off his foot for a turnover, the crowd starting to get angry.

Black -- -- He came in for Bass with 9+ minutes left, pretty much garbage time. The Lakers trimmed 10 points off the lead with him out there. We really should just sit Hibbert for the rest of the season. “He should be starting instead of Roy Hibbert,” Horry actually said after the game. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He blew a breakaway dunk. Soaring dunk off the two-man game with Huertas. He was blocked on a lefty jumphook.

Scott -- -- The Lakers pulled out to a 13-4 lead behind Kobe and Russell… Lakers were up 18-14 when Randle sat after 7 minutes for Nance. Lou in for Clarkson… Lakers up 3 when Kelly came in for Kobe with 4 minutes left… Bass in For Hibbert… Huertas in for Russell… The Lakers led 27-24 after the first quarter… He started the Bass, Nance, Kelly, Lou, Huertas unit that closed the quarter… Huertas out with 3 fouls for Clarkson a minute into the quarter… Russell in… Kobe in for Kelly, down 1… All starters in, during a 16-2 turn for the Wizards… Scott called a timeout down 43-34… They traded hoops for the rest of the half… The Lakers trailed 50-44 at the half… Lakers down 15 when Lou came in for Clarkson midway through the quarter… Bass in for Hibbert… Kobe out for Nance… No one able to put the ball in the hoop… Huertas in for Russell down 15 still… Kelly in for Randle… They trailed 77-59 heading into the fourth... He started the same unit to open the fourth… Black in for Bass, Lakers down 23 with 9+ minutes left… Clarkson in for Lou down 20 with 7 minutes left… Randle in a minute later for Kelly… They trimmed it to 13 and forced a timeout… Russell in for Huertas out of that… A couple hoops by the Wizards and the Lakers were out of striking distance again…

It appears that school was in session and the team was acting like they were all satisfied with getting C-s.

From this group of talented players (DLO, JC, Nance, Randle, Brown and Black), which one of them have shown the ability to make an impact on games?

All these players have displayed their skills at various times during the season, but which ones have shown glimpses of taking over the game or have the guts to take over games (i.e. Kobe taking three airballs in a playoff game in Utah)

Which one(s) are actually more than a passing thought of playing defense.

When the guards are taking most of the shots and crashing the boards, are they expecting the bigs to provide the transition defense?

Thoughts

Thanks DB! Well, we very well could end up with a 12 game losing streak to end the season. That would hopefully hasten Byron's exit, stage left...

Thanks as always DB. Are we locked into the 2nd slot yet?

EDIT: almost, but not yet it seems.

9 games to go, phoenix has 5 more wins than us.

So for all intents and purposes yes.

I was at the game last night. First time at Staples, and glad I got to see Kobe play one last time.

Was pretty exciting, don't even really care that they lost. John Wall is pretty deadly, would be interesting to see him on a better team.
