Character Builder… With the Russell/Young story gaining momentum after someone threw gas on the fire by leaking the locker room situation, the Lakers took to the floor.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. We’ll see what types of characters we have in that locker room when it’s all said and done,” Scott said.

Tonight was definitely a character builder on and off the court.

The Lakers got off to one of their usual slow starts as the Heat had an early 13-0 run in the first quarter. The transition D was awful, and Kobe was stone cold. After the second unit rallied, the Lakers trailed 48-41 at the half.

With some great energy from their bigs and timely guard scoring, they rallied in the third quarter. They traded leads in the fourth, we’re reeled in over the final couple minutes and headed to overtime for just the second time this year.

The young guys stepped up. Clarkson and Russell had a series of big scores, but Julius Randle stole the show. He ran clock on our final possession as we cleared the side for him. He attacked, spun to the middle and scored the jumphook over a couple defenders for the game winner with 1.9 seconds left. The kids came through with Kobe playing just 9 minutes tonight.

“If you look at the stats you almost wondered how the hell we won the game,” Scott said. The Lakers shot 36% and were outscored on the break 23-9. The only stat that mattered was the 102-100 final score. Nice bounce back after the last game and all the off-court issues.

Kobe -- -- He was not moving well out there, barely getting back in transition. Well, even worse than his usual this year, anyway. “I thought about sprinting back and just couldn’t go,” Kobe said. He couldn’t knock down shots, either. A big part of the reason the Lakers got off to the slow start was Kobe tonight. He knew it. They had just about every part of him wrapped up like a mummy after his first stint and he did not return. Just couldn’t get the body going tonight. Instead of “Let’s Go Lakers,” fans chanted “We Want Kobe.” But that wasn’t enough to get him back in the game after just the one 9-minute stretch. Kobe was happy to see Lamar there, talking trash and in good health. “What he was facing, it was like no hope and to see the way he is moving today is beyond anything I could have imagined.” On the Russell situation, he said all he can do is his best Yoda impersonation and give him sage advice. Some great quotes from Kobe below in the Russell write-up. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-7 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and no fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He sank a 16-footer taking a handoff off the split play for the Lakers first score. He missed a wing three. He was blocked by Wade on a turnaround. He missed a sideline three off the inbounds. He was blocked by a double team. He missed a turnaround and didn’t get back on D to give up a dunk. Not close on a wing three. He didn’t get back in transition again for another layup for his man. He had 2 points on 1-7 shooting.

Clarkson -- -- He shaved the head, put on the headband and got to work. He matched Wade’s 26 points with 26 of his own. He came up big down the stretch with a series of scores from the final seconds of regulation through overtime. “I ain’t going to lie to you, the last game was embarrassing,” Clarkson said. Good battle with Wade tonight. “It’s definitely a humbling experience for me to even step on the court with him,” JC said. He said they had confidence in Randle to finish the game. He had a great OT, but glad to see him have no problem clearing out for his draft brother and letting him go to work. Man, I wish these guys had more than two OT games this year. This season has had so little of these types of minutes for them to work in. They stepped up to the challenge tonight. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 9-19 shooting (2-6 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He swished the wing three. He missed a three off a swing pass. He missed an elbow pull-up. He picked up his dribble and then swished a turnaround when the D relaxed. He missed a floater curling off a handoff. He swiped a pass in transition. He pushed out the break, lost Dragic with a crossover and scored the layup. He had a three roll down and out (that thing was deep before crawling out). He attacked Whiteside and missed a prayer. He had 7 points on 3-8 shooting. Second Half: He probed the paint and drew FTs in a crowd, he made both. He missed a drive in early offense. He missed an easy floater a few seconds later. He got his man on his hip on a drive right and took it all the way for the layup. He swished a three on a kickout. He drew a moving screen foul on D. He airballed a step-back jumper, looked possibly fouled. Way short on a three. He attacked with speed down the lane, drew FTs and lost a contact again on a foul, he missed both. He swished a quick elbow pull-up over Whiteside. He got an elbow fade to fall. He iso’d against Whiteside and had his dribble poked away and it led to a shotclock violation, big play with 1:20 left. He turned the corner on Whiteside and jumped back into him on the drive to draw FTs with 19.8 left, he made both clutch ones to tie it. Overtime: He attacked to his right from the wing and scored the layup. He was hit on a pull-up jumper with 1:51 left, he made both FTs. He sank a pull-up FT jumper working off the screen.

Russell -- -- The Russell/Young story has been brewing since last week and finally got some legs after someone in the organization leaked that Russell had been shunned by teammates as retribution for breaking trust. Whatever tribal justice had been going on, it went global. “I feel as sick as possible,” Russell said in the pregame presser. “I wish I could make things better right away, but I can’t.” He said he didn’t have any idea how the tape got out. “This just got in the wrong hands,” Russell said, adding he and Nick mess around a lot. After the game, he said Kobe told him, “You got to just play. You got to just play.” His agent and John Black have their hands full as the team is now forced to address the controversy. He’ll need to do a lot more public speaking and explaining to get out from this Dumb and Dumber sequel. Ultimately, he’ll have to show up and ball. “You can’t undo the damage that’s been done. All you can do is stay apologetic and from your heart, show how much you care and how sorry you are to your teammates for putting them through something like that could really tear a locker room apart. It’s all on me. It’s my job to let guys know I messed up and got to bounce back from it.” In the game, he hit a couple of early shots, then went cold for a while. He was coming up short on a number of midrange jumpers. In OT, he sank a huge three up against the shotclock and followed that with a drive for a score. Big points. He also had a couple of turnovers after that trying to create. Still, a good on-court experience for him with all the off-court pressure and then overtime. Long night for D’Angelo. “His teammates will gravitate toward him if he says all the right things and does all the right things,” Scott said. He added that he thinks this got Russell’s attention as far as maturing. He’s definitely going to grow up a little, but hopefully he takes this into the offseason and works his ass off. “I think it’s best for me and D’Angelo to handle the situation we have in the private matter outside the media,” Young said in a short statement. He said they have to work on it. “There’s a lot of things in life you can’t control, but the things you can control you’ve got to do to the best of your ability,” Kobe said. He called the Russell situation “unfortunate” and said he will be better from it. “We’re all human. I don’t think anybody can hold anybody to strict judgment,” Kobe said. He added that important thing is to show “compassion and empathy and help him grow.” Some very mature words of wisdom. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-19 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He drew a moving screen foul on D to get a stop. He missed a wing three in early offense. He attacked the lane off the wing screen, was held with his right and one-handed the lefty And-1 floater up and in, he made the FT. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He was picked off for a 3-0 breakaway the other way. He got a kind bounce on a sideline three. He lost his man on a sweet behind-the-back dribble but missed the floater. He posted up, backed his man down and missed the turnaround. He had 6 points on 2-6 shooting. Second Half: He probed the baseline and was swatted on his reverse. He posted up and drew FTs on the swing through, he made one. He pushed out the break and swished the pull-up wing jumper. He swiped a pass under the hoop, pushed it out and hit Randle for the dunk. He missed a three on a tap out. He hit a pull-up at the FT line off the nice screen from Hibbert. He missed a wing three in transition. He missed a pull-up FT jumper. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He missed a behind-the-backboard attempt in the post. He missed a pull-up but got it back and reset the offense. He missed another pull-up jumper up against the clock. Short again on a jumper. Overtime: He sank a huge wing three with the shotclock low off an inbounds. He muscled his way past Dragic for the layup. He lost the ball on a fake, turnover. Turnover trying to hit Bass on the two-man game.

Randle -- -- No timeout. Clock running. We cleared out the side for Randle. He ran clock, attacked off the dribble, shook Deng a couple of times before spinning to the middle and hitting the jumphook with 1.9 left in OT. That was the game winner and brought the big balls celebration from Julius after the score. Loved seeing the young guys in OT. They all had their moments. Randle also made clutch FTs in regulation and OT, and he had a pretty good challenge at the buzzer on the final shot. “When we get on the court it’s a brotherhood,” Randle said of putting behind the whole locker room issues. The young guys made it happen tonight. Loved seeing us Julius with the ball in his hands vs. the guards for the final possession. That takes a lot of confidence and his teammates will have more confidence in him in the future. “His awareness I thought was fantastic,” Scott said of Randle closing the game and attacking at the right time. “He attacked with great confidence,” Kobe said. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-11 shooting (5-6 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He swished a wing jumper, looked like it came off his fingertips well. He attacked right and missed with his right. He missed a wing step-back up against the shotclock. He missed an easy one on a drive left. He was called for an offensive foul trying to post up. He hit Russell for a three. He missed a short one in a crowd. Second Half: He dunked on the break when Russell hit him. He attacked right, spun back to his left and missed. He up-faked, attacked baseline and dunked. He grabbed an offensive board and drew a foul in a crowd, he made both FTs. He attacked, drew the D and dumped it to Bass for the And-1 dunk. He attacked to his right and couldn’t muscle in a layup. He iso’d and missed the turnaround. He iso’d, attacked to his left with 50 seconds left and drew a foul, dumping Wade to the floor in the process, he made one FT to tie it up. Overtime: He pushed out a rebound and drew FTs with a minute left, he made both clutch ones. He iso’d, ran the clock down, attacked, spun and hit the jumphook with 1.9 seconds left to take the lead, he had Deng guessing. Nice challenge on the defensive end, as well, to force a miss.

Hibbert -- -- Whatever the reason, the Roy Hibbert we’ve wanted to see since preseason showed up tonight. It wasn’t just his rare double-digit offensive game. In fact, that wasn’t it at all. It was his D. He was active and disruptive. Maybe it was Whiteside motivating him, maybe the vet trying to lead in a crisis. Or maybe he was just sick of the crappy ball he and the team played in the last one. This was one of his best jobs anchoring the D all season. “He was one of the main reasons in that third quarter that we were able to get back in that third quarter and take a lead,” Scott said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards (6 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed an 18-footer out of the triangle on the first possession. He was called for a moving screen. He was tied up in the post. He tipped in a Kelly miss. Second Half: He was called for a travel, looked like a jumpball. He worked the post, up-faked and scored. He swatted a drive, stayed with it and blocked it with Randle again. He blocked another shot at the rim next time down (great rotation), stayed with it and got a piece of another attempt and forced the Heat into a shotclock violation. He bobbled a pass and missed the runner. He missed an open jumper. He hit a high-arching jumphook at the end of the quarter. He muscled his way to the front of the rim and tipped in a miss. He challenged a shot and then recovered the miss. He posted up and banked in a jumphook. He missed a fallaway with the shotlcock low. He swiped a lob pass with a great read. He drew FTs on the defensive glass on a big stop, he made both. He missed a rushed shot just beating the shotclock out of a timeout.

Williams -- -- A lot of threes shooting and, of course, drawing fouls. That’s pretty much what his game consisted of. He helped the team dig out of that first quarter hole. Part of the Russell story was an example of Lou shunning Russell. So now Lou is involved in the story thanks to whomever in the organization leaked the latest story. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 2-7 shooting all from three (5-7 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a three moving to his left. He drew contact on the perimeter for FTs, he made both. He drew more FTs on a three next time down, he made two. He swished a corner three. He swiped a pass on the other end, got it back and missed a wing three. He missed a wing three after an up-fake. He swished a wing three to get the Lakers a lead. He missed a three going to his left next time down. He had 10 points on 2-6 shooting. Second Half: He missed a three fading to his left. He fumbled a pass away, layup the other way. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made one.

Nance -- -- Great energy off the bench making things happen and helping the second unit dig out of the hole in the first half. I was going to say the stats don’t really show his impact, but that +18 was about right. He imposed a lot of energy on the game, got to offensive boards and made things happen. Energy is contagious. In these big wins, he said, “we see what we could be if we put it all together,” Nance said. When asked about the controversy, he said, “What’s in the locker room stays in the locker room. That’s not mine to discuss.” Well said from a rookie. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-7 shooting to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He crashed the glass and dunked in the Williams missed three. He swiped a ball and pushed it out with speed. He soared to grab an offensive board away from a Heat player a few seconds later. He missed a long wing jumper. He ball faked and missed the baseline jumper. He attacked Whiteside, pumped and flipped in a layup under him. Second Half: He missed a jumphook. He was blocked on a putback but we recovered it.

Bass -- -- Good effort from both our C’s tonight. Bass had his hands full with the much longer Whiteside coming off the bench. Hibbert played most of the fourth and Bass came in at the tail end and then OT. Whiteside’s numbers were ridiculous: 18 points on 6-8 shooting, 17 boards, 7 blocked shots. He probably had another 10 shot alterations. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 3 offensive boards and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He missed a drive against the shotclock. He scooped up a Kelly rejection and dunked. He slammed off the two-man game with Huertas. He was rejected on a layup attempt. He tried to take Whiteside off the dribble and was rejected out of bounds. Not close trying to finish around Whiteside. Second Half: Randle attacked, drew the D and dished to Bass for the And-1 dunk, he missed the FT. He drew FTs on the lob from Huertas, he made both. Overtime: He missed a tough, high arching jumper over Whiteside as he tried to beat the shotclock.

Huertas -- One of the more amazing/amusing things I have ever seen on a basketball court in this one. Huertas hid behind Spoelstra during a freethrow. As the Heat brought the ball up, he jumped out behind him and blindsided the Heat guard for the steal. That was amazing. I had to rewind that about 10 times. Good job helping change the mojo of the game in that first quarter after the starters came out stiff. He moved the ball well and hit shots off the two-man game when he had to. He led the team in assist with 4. He trimmed the hair (he should go with that look). The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-9 shooting to go with 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He worked the two-man game with Bass and set him up for the dunk. He hit the floater next time down on the same sequence. He missed a short, open wing jumper. He missed the floater off the two-man game. He missed a runner. He was blocked on a floater. His pass off the two-man game was picked off. Second Half: He missed a runner. Amazing steal hiding behind the Miami coach to then steal the ball from behind. He hit Bass for the lob and it led to FTs. He knocked down a floater next time down to force the timeout. He attacked from the wing and scooped in a layup over Whiteside like Steve Nash would have. He missed a baseline floater and wanted the foul.

Kelly -- -- He’s 1 of his last 19 from three. He was definitely avoiding taking them, moving in on off the three line whenever he could. He was back at the SF with Nance tonight. Once Kobe sat, we slid Nance to starting SF. No minutes for Nick. Ouch. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting to go with 5 boards, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He was rejected on a layup on the break. He posted up the smaller defender and hit the turnaround elbow jumper. He missed a short one on the baseline. Second Half: The D gambled for a steal and lost, Kelly moved in and banked the short one. He missed a FT jumper trying to create. He crossed over and missed a pull-up with a man on.

Scott -- -- Glad to see the young guys get some quality minutes tonight… A 13-0 run for the Heat early on. A lot of motion-weak and triangle early on. Kobe floundering… Hibbert out for Bass midway through the quarter Lakers down 17-7… Lou in for Clarkson, Lakers down 7… Scott called a timeout with the Lakers down 21-10 with 5:14 left… Kobe just awful on both ends, not getting back in transition… Lakers brought in Nance, Kelly and Huertas for Kobe, Randle and Russell, down 13… Good job by the second unit to reel the Heat back in, everyone but Kelly contributing… The Lakers trailed 27-25 after the first quarter… He brought in Clarkson for Lou down 2 after 3 minutes… Randle in for Nance, Lakers down 2… Hibbert and Russell in for Bass and Huertas, down 6 with 5 minutes left… Zone out of a timeout down 3… Kobe not returning in the half… The Lakers trailed 48-41 at the half. Just 5 assists for the Lakers as they shot 31% in the half… He started Nance at SF instead of Kobe… They took a 2-point lead midway through the quarter… Up 4, he sat Nance for Kelly… Up 4 and Clarkson and Russell sat for Huertas and Williams… Hibbert back in briefly for Randle… They were tied 67-67 heading into the fourth… Hibbert, Bass, Kelly, Williams and Huertas… Up 78-72, he brought in Clarkson and Russell for Williams and Huertas with 8 minutes left… Hibbert, Randle, Nance, Clarkson, Russell… They had a 5 point lead with 3 minutes left… Horrible possession out of a timeout, nearly a shotclock violation on a prayer… Lakers down 2 with 29 seconds left after Wade hit over Clarkson. Timeout… Clarkson drew FTs on a drive off the wing screen. Tie game… Bass in for Hibbert for D… Russell with a stop on Wade at the Buzzer. OT… Nance jumping center and he won it… Both teams trading hoops… 100-98 Laker lead, timeout Miami with 1 minute left… Randle on iso for the lead with 1.9 left. We didn’t call a timeout, ran clock and let him create…

It was unfortunate to see Kobe in that state but everything else went as well as we could have hoped:

- A win despite all the off court distractions.
- Lamar getting to soak it in from courtside.
- The young guys closing out a game.
- Julius hitting his first gamewinner.

Just what we needed after a long day.

Thanks DB. Excellent write-up as always, the game wasn't always pretty but the outcome was!

Good gut check. Good character test and the Lakers passed.

Best part of the game was seeing Lamar
https://twitter.com/Rachel__Nichols/status/715359742361604097/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Lakers have two lineups
* The first one is a lineup of talented players that take turns of playing ISO (ala the Clippers)
* The second lineup of players not as talented but playing like a team (ala the Spurs)

Are DLO/JC/Randle among the rare players that can consistently be successful mainly on ISOs (ala Melo)?

What will it take for the ball to move when DLO/JC/Randle are on the court?

Seems like Byron is a better HC when Huertsas is on the court and worse when DLO/JC are on the court

The numbers and eye test says it's Bass/Black vs Hibbert that typically makes the biggest difference.

Agree that at the 5, Bass/Black is better than Hibbert - stat-wise. Bass/Black being more effective offensively and mobile enough to adapt to the many defensive mistakes of the perimeter players

Obviously the ball moves much better in a true PG like Huertsas than with combo guards like DLO/JC (who have more raw talent)

At least the youngsters know that, to be a Laker, you have to always be dealing with some drama. Good to see them bounce back after the Utah massacre and DLo's immaturity. Strange, but wasn't he the one earlier in the year talking about trust issues on the team?

Whiteside always kills us. He has the physical gifts to be like DeAndre, but could mentally be like Bynum. Do you think he's worth the max?

Yeah, rather than looking solely at those young three...I think Hibbert and Kobe (or Metta) have been pretty awful at times. Kobe was horrific last night on both ends and knew it. He also consistently throws tweaks into the play calls that I think bog things down as we lose flow. Hibbert is often a wrench in the flow, as well...although last night he was an extremely rare game from him.

Yes, Lakers should go after Whiteside. We would have a killer young core.

Agreed. I'm not completely sold on him, but the dude is a monster.
