And they play in an arena called Staples.

And that arena has ads on the court, banner ads along the sidelines, banner ads in the rafters, ads on the scoreboard, and ads all over the lobby and concourse. If you watch the game on TV there are commercial breaks featuring ads, and that's when you're not watching the Jack in the Box Halftime Report and the Subway Sub of the Game. I don't think it's a lot to ask to keep the jerseys unmolested.

Oh and I forgot the ads that are on screen during game play. Mostly during free throws but occasionally they leak into live play. Just kinda sad.

Personally, I don't like the advertising (heck, I don't like stadiums named after companies). But I accept the NBA is a money-obsessed business, not some civic institution, and they'll grab any dime they can get. So you can ask to keep the jerseys unmolested, but I can't imagine it will change anything. Wouldn't shock me if they sell ads on the game balls at some point.

The players might protest the sleeves, because they find them uncomfortable, but they won't be against ads on their uniforms because they share in the money from the ads. And they wear brands of shoes for money, so their uniforms are already advertisements.

It's kinda both, really, so long as teams ostensibly represent the cities in which they're based. That's why I have no problem with what golfers or NASCAR drivers do since they don't purport to represent anything other than themselves or their team ownership groups.

But when teams play with the names of cities on their chests (and often in buildings at least partially financed by the city) it just seems tacky and disingenuous to slap a completely unrelated corporate logo onto that jersey and call them "partners" or something corporate-speak like that.

Of course it won't change anything. No one at the NBA cares about what weirdos like me think, and I'm sure they've focus-grouped and informally-polled this thing to death such that they're satisfied that all the screaming and crying and boycotting will be very short-lived. And they're right.

No one outside of a few fans and Paul Lukas over at ESPN even care about this stuff.

Those are just the names of the manufacturers. I'm not crazy about that part either, but at least those companies literally had something to do with the equipment, in that they made it and all. It would be different if Kobe were rocking shoes with Jack in the Box and Budweiser logos on them.

Surprised it took NBA so long. Chevrolet are paying $80 M per year to Manchester United for their shirt sponsorship. Sponsors would love to have such deals with NBA team given its popularity worldwide.

This.

Seriously, is there any evidence that putting their horrible branding all over jerseys actually increases revenue for the advertisers? It seems like wasted money for an eyesore.

Before the financial meltdown I associated AIG mostly with Manchester United.

The NBA is a business, it shouldn't be a surprise that they will look at new revenue streams.

The only thing I see being difficult is having enough space on the jersey for the Lakers (or whatever franchise) logo. It's not like international soccer teams who have small emblems that are synonymous with their clubs. In the NBA each team is recognizable by their team name on their jerseys.

Once they see the money the NBA is getting from jersey logos, it will only be a matter of time.

One thing I'm grateful for is we'll never have to see Kobe in a jersey with a Papa John's logo on it.

I draw the line on players turning to the cameras to give spoken endorsements mid-play or mid-shot.

Quote:
Report: NBA restricts teams ads on jerseys; no alcohol, tobacco, politics, more

The Los Angeles Lakers are not going to have a silhouette of a Patron bottle on their jerseys.

Despite the potential tie in with GM Vlade Divac, the Sacramento Kings are not going to be sponsored by Marlboro.

While NBA teams have been cleared to sell a small patch ad on jerseys for next season — to go on the left shoulder, where the KIA logo was on the All-Star uniforms this season (if you even noticed it) — there are limitations, reports Darren Rovell of ESPN.

In most cases this was not going to be an issue, but the league did not want to risk a local casino or whatever jumping in with a big bid.

Teams are expected to get several million dollars for the ad deals (larger markets will get more, smaller markets less). This is part of a three-year trial program approved by the owners, although once the money starts coming in it’s hard to imagine to owners deciding to scrap the idea.

It's inevitable that all teams in every sport will succumb to this. Every stadium/arena is already named after a giant corporation. The jersey's are the next logical step.

First the stadiums, now the jerseys, later the names: "Coaching for the Jack in the Box Lakers tonight is Luke Walmart!"

Philadelphia 76ers announce jersey patch deal with StubHub

Adam Silver and a vote of the owners has cleared the way, and by the 2017-18 season every team will have an advertisers patch on the left shoulder. Purists will howl because that is what they do, but there was a Kia patch on the NBA All-Star Game jerseys this past season and it was met with a collective yawn by the public.

The 76ers have announced a deal with secondary ticket market broker StubHub to sponsor their jerseys starting in the fall of 2017 (the season after next), the team has announced Monday. They are the first team to strike and announce a deal.

“This marks another groundbreaking first for the Philadelphia 76ers and StubHub. Our brands are now inextricably linked as we create lifelong memories for our fans in Philadelphia and around the world,” Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil said in a statement. “Our partnership with StubHub continues to generate progressive and forward-thinking platforms created to improve the fan experience and advance our industry.”

While there had been resistance from some owners, the NBA had been moving toward doing this for some time. Is it about making more money? Duh. Sorry to break it to you, but this is a business. It’s an entertainment business that counts on people being emotionally invested in the product, but it’s still a business. These NBA owners didn’t get to be billionaires by leaving a few million on the table.

While the finances of the deal were not publicly made official, ESPN’s Darren Rovell reports this is a three-year deal at $5 million per year. That’s more than most teams expected to be available (or at least that number was thought to be the max teams in L.A. or New York would get). This may bring in more revenue than expected.

The league approved a three-year trial of this program then the owners will revisit the issue (if you think the owners are going to give back a revenue stream after three years, I’d like to sell you a bridge).

The NBA is not going NASCAR with the number of patches, nor is it going European soccer (or WNBA) where the name across the front of the jersey gets replaced by corporate sponsorships. This is one small patch on the left shoulder. But go ahead and howl in the comments.
