I hate that even though they can do the draft lottery now that the season is over and the tie-breakers have been done, they choose to put it off until mid-May. I get that it's not the best time since the playoffs are just starting, but hell, it's just the damn draft lottery. What, they squeeze like a mere hour show out of it? Which pretty much just turns into a pregame special during the playoffs. It's a very temporary distraction that won't take much away from the 1st round, and it gives teams with picks (or potential picks) in the lottery the knowledge they need to narrow in their search on particular draft prospects during that time. It's so unfair, not every team is a playoff team, some teams' off-seasons have already started and could use that time to prepare better. |

I hadn't really thought about it before, but I have to agree. What do they lose by doing it now instead of later in the playoffs? It would benefit the teams to know where they are picking. If you are slated to pick 3rd by your record, but drop down to 5th after the lottery, for example, obviously there may be some players you don't need to bother bringing in. There may be trade opportunities to explore, if you only like the first few picks. Why wouldn't the NBA do the lottery early? Would people lose interest in the draft with the larger interval? I don't think they would. It isn't like there is no basketball happening to keep their interest. |
