here's my rough understanding of the hierarchy. please correct any errors i make.

1. OWNER - highest level. the busses and whatever minority owners there are.
2. PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS - Jim Buss
3. GENERAL MANAGER - Mitch Kupchak
4. ASSISTANT GM - Ryan West (is it ryan west? i forget)
5. HEAD COACH - Vacant
6. Associate Coach - Vacant
7. Player/Special Coaches - (big man coaches, shooting coaches)

any other ranks or titles that i am missing? where does rudy T fit in? and where does jeannie actually fit in?

Lakers hierarchy is a bit of a strange one because it's still a family run business at the end of the day. Ryan is also not assistant GM, he's been given a fancier title (Director of Player Personnel).

Rudy is a close friend of Mitch, he does side things for him (scouting?). Jeanie is one of the part owners/pres.

You're not gonna see a lot "Officer" or "Executive" so-and-so on the Lakers list. Some of the people there probably have their own titles.
For example, long time Bill Bertka is another "Director of-".

I think Jeanie is president and jim is VP. Mitch is gm. Assistant gm Ryan West.

Rudy T is part of our scouting department.

Jim Buss - Vice-President of Basketball Operations

Mitch Kupchak - General Manager
Jesse Buss - Assistant General Manager
Ryan West - Director of Player Personnel

Clay Moser - Director of Basketball Strategy
Aaron Danielson - Associate Director of Analytics
Yuju Lee - Director of Analytics

It's not a strict hierarchy, like the military, as much as a matrix. The Lakers decision-making process has always been murky, so the power and authority is murky as well. The relationships people have are more important than the titles.

I was looking through the media guide and found another Buss on the payroll as a scout. Googled 'Sean Buss' and the only info on him is an arrest for assaulting a police officer.

With ownership, you have owners (people with an equity stake in the franchise) and controlling owners (people empowered to make decisions on behalf of the franchise). You also have Governors (people who represent the franchise with the NBA, and who have a seat on the Board of Governors, the league's controlling body). Usually the controlling owner and governor are one and the same. In the Lakers' case, the controlling owner is the Buss Family Trust, and the trust dictates how authority over the franchise is distributed (Jeanie, Jim, other sibs). Jeanie is in the role of Governor per the trust.

And Glen Carraro is the assistant GM, but actual titles are fungible. In terms of basketball authority, it's basically Jim, Mitch, Glen, Ryan, in that order.

Also, per NBA rules, only two designated people are allowed to actually negotiate with players on behalf of the franchise. For the Lakers that's Jim & Mitch.

Good to know that even Jim realizes that Jesse is best known for his drunken antics and just has a token title in the organization.
