I don't think so. I think he sets into his story telling mode from his castle in Newport and only answers the phone to players who call him - I don't think he'll actively get out there and try to recruit anyone to come, especially now that it's not affecting him seeing as his playing career is over. 4 years ago? Hell yeah. Retired Kobe? No reason to recruit for this team, it has zero impact on his life now.

I'm pretty sure he'll call Durant or have a dinner with him or whatever. Heck I'm sure these talks have already happened multiple times.

I hope he does and in the future. Kobe can be very persuasive. He's very articulate, intelligent, engaging, and can be inviting in his rhetoric. More importantly, he knows what it's like to win in this cit and everything that comes with that: endorsements, commercials, etc. Kobe bleeds purple and gold, and I believe he'll be there for us when we need him.

"... the thrown"? C'mon.

Anyway -- I'm sure he'll help when he has the time.

It'd be nice, but if he doesn't I understand. He's done more than enough for the franchise.

Yeah - kind of what I thought also, if he's requested to come to a meeting once in awhile to give his pitch similarly to how Magic Johnson has been called to speak to a specific free agent - then I could see it but not going out of his way to recruit. He said as much while still playing, he said he leaves it to the FO to do their job and he stays out of it.

I've never seen any evidence that retired NBA greats have much affect on where free agents go. The main thing will be who the new coach is and what he has to say.

I think his retirement "tour" was recruitment enough. Players around the league aren't stupid -- The Lakers as a team sucked, but the Lakers brand is unlike any other. I guarantee you they took notice of the fans love all year long and all the celebrities that turned out for the final game.

Contrary to the spins fabricated by media and haters, Kobe actually seems to resonate with FAs well. LaMarcus said it was the best part of the Laker presentation as did others.

I think he'll recruit much more low key. Over phone or dinner.

It'd be nice if he does, but he really doesn't have to. Unless a special situation occurs where him making a pitch would be a bonus.

I'm sure if Kobe felt the free agent was top dog, if we buttered Kobe up, cleared the landing pad, and threw the right amount of money at him, he'll show up in a fancy suit with and the right attitude.

If he happened to be in the area working out, and it was a non top dog free agent, and we asked him just as a favor, I'm sure he'll rub the free agent the wrong way, just to see what they were made of. For example when he showed up in gym shorts for Dwight's meeting and said, "I can teach you how to be a champion." That would work for certain people, but Kobe knew Dwight. He knew Dwight wouldn't be up to to challenge. He knew a comment like that would totally turn him off, and it did. And it worked out well for us. Just like missing the Carmelo meeting. That worked great for us. Come to think of it. Kobe is a very bright guy. He save the organization from themselves quite a few times.

I'm sure that he'll just be like "you should come to the Lakers man" when he works out with guys from other teams. Other than that though, I doubt it'll happen, even if the Lakers offered to pay him.
