How close are we to having every NBA team with a D-League affiliate?
Quote: | Over the last four seasons the NBA D-League has grown from 16 teams to an all-time high of 22 teams. The number of teams rising is a positive, but even more vital is that each and every team has a single affiliation with an NBA club. Now those clubs are starting to build their own farm systems per se and some have even started using their affiliates for domestic draft-and-stash players, a new phenomenon that simply would not be possible without these partnerships. |

D-Fenders Josh Magette will play for the Brooklyn Nets' Las Vegas Summer League team
Quote: | All of those factors point to Magette having a real shot to make the Nets' regular-season roster, or at least receive a training camp invite, with a strong showing in Vegas. Magette was one of the team leaders on the D-Fenders last season, and in addition to his production on the court would provide a well-liked locker room presence and toughness for a Nets team that will need all the positivity it can get with no obvious paths back to contention as a result of the win-now trades made by the previous management regime.

Vander Blue with Dallas Mavericks Summer League team Quote: | Few players look more NBA ready than Vander Blue did last season in the D-League. He was the most consistent scorer in the league, averaging 26.3 points per game over 48 games on 44 percent shooting from the floor. |

Vander Blue drops 23 points
Quote: | Magic White 92, Dallas 85 - Vander Blue’s game high 23 points weren’t enough to counter-act six Orlando players in double digits as one of the two home teams took the narrow victory. Magic White built an eight point lead after the end of the first quarter and it drifted as high as 16 in the second before settling at nine at the half. Dallas managed to claw one point back in each of the final two quarters, but that was about it.
Blue had a pretty good shooting day, going 7-13 overall and 2-5 from long range. He added a rebound and two steals, but also committed four fouls and four turnovers. |

D-Fenders Update:
*Vander Blue shines in SL
Quote: | Vander Blue led the Mavs with 17 points, while Marquis Teague and Andre Dawkins each scored 14 and Jaleel Cousins, brother of DeMarcus Cousins, had 12 points. Tyler Honeycutt grabbed 13 rebounds. |

Quote: | Handing the scoring duties over to cat-quick guard Vander Blue, the Mavericks again pushed their lead to double digits early in the second stanza. The Mavs also sped up the tempo, surging ahead by as many as 18 in the quarter. Blue’s 10 points in the half then lifted the Mavericks into the intermission with a 43-29 advantage. |

*D-League Increases Salaries For 16-17 Season
Quote: | For the past couple seasons the salary structure in place for the D-League has consisted of tiers. There were three tiers of salaries: $13,000 (C), $19,000 (B) and $25,500 (A) and each team had a salary cap of $173,000 on top of that. |

If the Lakers do invite any of the likes of Auguste or Munford to the training camp but they don't make the final roster, hopefully the D-Fenders sign them. _________________ Coach MWP. |

The LA D-Fenders Are Staying Busy This Summer
The Lakers’ D-League affiliate, the D-Fenders are staying busy this offseason just like their founding organization
Quote: | Coming off a disappointing loss in the D-League Championship, the Lakers’ D-League squad, the D-Fenders are still making waves in both the NBA Summer League and in games at The Drew League. |

NBA Invites with D-League in Mind
Quote: | While Auguste, Jacobs and Wear will have the opportunity to make the team, they may be more likely to end up in the NBA Development League, playing for the D-Fenders as affiliate players of the Lakers.
The figures for Jacobs and Wear are not yet available, but it’s become common practice for teams to help subsidize D-League stints with partially-guaranteed training camp contracts.
The NBA’s minor league system is not without its pratfalls. Once a player clears waivers, they become an unrestricted free agent — able to sign with another team, be it in the NBA or overseas.
If they do sign a D-League contract, the team that can them can assign them to their D-League squad as affiliate players, but a call up back to the NBA can come from any team.
While this may be looked at in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement, the current rules afford NBA teams limited protection on the players they’re developing.
Meanwhile, the D-League has grown to 22 franchises, each with a one-to-one partnership with an NBA team. |

Los Angeles D-Fenders Officially Name Coby Karl as Head Coach
Quote: | The Los Angeles D-Fenders have named Coby Karl as head coach, it was announced today by team President/CEO Joey Buss and General Manager Nick Mazzella. Karl will replace Casey Owens, who takes over as an assistant coach and advance scout on the Los Angeles Lakers staff.
Karl returns to the D-Fenders organization after appearing in 17 games for the team during the 2007-08 season while on assignment from the Lakers. On February 19, 2008, Karl became the second player in NBA Development League history to play in an NBADL and NBA game in the same day, following former Lakers guard Jordan Farmar. As a player, Karl saw action with the Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors of the NBA, as well as with the D-Fenders, Reno Bighorns, and Idaho Stampede of the NBADL. He most recently served as an assistant coach on the Westchester Knicks staff during the 2015-16 season at the conclusion of his playing career. |

I like Coby coaching the d-fenders for various reasons -
1) It should make the transition to the Lakers easier for the possible call-ups, as Coby will likely establish the same offensive foundation Luke will run. Coby and Luke were also teammates at one point so I think they will be in extra communication with each other in what they want the developmental guys to learn. It won't be like last season where I'm assuming there was zero communication between Byron and Casey.
2) The d-league is expanding and the competition should get better in the coming years. If Silver augments the roster format to include d-league slots as he suggested, it will give players much more incentive to not go overseas to make money. This should theoretically increase the talent pool.
3) If one of the assistant coaches on the Lakers happens to get poached at some point (I'm looking at Mermuys and Theo), Coby would be a great replacement, as he will be familiar with the offensive concepts. He's also very young and should be more relatable to the players. |

Los Angeles D-Fenders Have a New Coach in Former Laker Coby Karl
Quote: | Coach Phil Jackson and his father George Karl both taught him just to be himself. Derek Fisher was the most impactful teammate for Coby, as well as Kobe and his intense practice routines.
Coby says his coaching style is, “To be determined — I think my players will teach me a ton, my coaches will teach me a ton.”
He is a laid back guy who empowers his players to be great, and he will give them the space to figure out who they are. He feels in the D-League, you are so close, yet so far, from playing in the league. |

Coby Karl Follows in Father’s Footsteps to First Head Coaching Job
Quote: | Distinguished coaching trees don’t grow without strong roots.
For Coby Karl, becoming head coach of the L.A. D-Fenders represents an opportunity to revisit familiar roots. Son of legendary coach George, the younger Karl earns his first head coaching gig with only one year of coaching experience. But what he lacks in sideline experience is compensated by his basketball journey. |

Nice thing about Coby is he can still play. You can see him practicing w/ the Laker dudes in the Yi Jianlian interview. |
