Sixers Claim That Dikembe Mutombo Didn't Reveal A Grand NBA Draft Conspiracy

The NBA draft lottery is at 8 p.m. EDT tonight in New York City. At 4:36 p.m., Dikembe Mutombo tweeted his congratulations to his former team, the Philadelphia 76ers, for winning the lottery and “grabbing the #1 spot.” Mutombo apologized and clarified that he had tweeted too soon and was just getting amped for the lottery, as I assume all Sixers fans are right now.

Dikembe Mutombo Deletes Tweet Congratulating 76ers On Winning NBA Draft Lottery
The NBA draft lottery is tonight at 8 p.m., but Dikembe Mutombo’s Twitter account couldn’t wait…

Mutombo is a known humanitarian and he’s been awarded three honorary doctorate degrees, so the reasonable takeaway here is that he simply mistweeted and did not accidentally spill the beans about some grand NBA draft lottery conspiracy. However, being a naturally suspicious bunch, we reached out to the Sixers’ (very helpful) PR director Michael Preston and asked if Mutombo accidentally pulled the lid off a damning, vast draft lottery-rigging scandal.

Hi Michael,

I am a journalist with Deadspin, and I’m curious about Dikembe Mutombo’s tweet congratulating the team on winning the draft lottery. Did he accidentally break news that the team had found out they’d won?

Thanks
Michael Preston 6:28 PM

Hi Patrick - Believe Dikembe followed up with a tweet explaining that he got ahead of himself looking forward to tonight based the probability. The actual drawing has yet to take place. I’m on-site here in NYC and anxiously awaiting the outcome tonight like everyone else (including Dikembe). Thanks!

Okay cool, so, just to be clear, you’re saying that Dikembe Mutombo does not have proprietary information regarding a grand conspiracy to rig the lottery?
Michael 6:51 PM

to: me

That is correct.
Well, there it is; we would prefer to think Preston isn’t telling the truth, but we’ll all find out soon enough (unless Mutombo’s tweet inadvertently leads the powers that be to change up their carefully-laid plans, in which case, who knows what could happen?).

Hotel footage reveals he was met by a couple tall pallid men dressed in black prior to his death.

Aren't their odds of getting the #1 the same as any other team with the worse record in previous years (after the odds changes post Webber draft)?

To be fair to conspiracy theorists, NBA does have an incentive to fix things like this to make sure certain markets are competitive.

Then the Lakers would get the #1 pick every year.

Eh. If you believe in conspiracy theories, you don't need any logic or reasoning to justify them to yourself. That's why conspiracy theorists can always rationalize why contradictory outcomes are part of the same conspiracy.

Well, we don't know what benefits the league as a whole.
Perhaps they found that the league revenue goes up when there are more small market teams that are competitive? Who knows.

I'm not a conspiracy theory thumper and I don't think that's what is going on here with Mutombo (can you imagine that you'd run a league-wide conspiracy and Mutombo is one of the guys you let in on the plan??), but unlike an international or nation-wide conspiracy in the governments, this is just a (albeit very big) basketball league.
Fixing something like the draft wouldn't need more than 2-20 people to keep quiet.
Certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

Just imagine if Magic was the one that tweeted congratulations to Lakers for #1 pick and we got it.

Magic Johnson banned from NBA. Lakers penalized 10 1st round picks.

Wouldn't the lottery played live be a highly rated event? I am so surprised they haven't done this yet.

It's in reverse order. That's why they don't.

People will stop watching after the first three because at that point the order will be known for the rest.

By showing it in the order they do now, there is "excitement" up until the very last two announcements, the top two picks.

Do they draw the balls live? I was just listening on the radio? I thought they might do the lottery ball drawing in a back room with the reps from each team and then they go on air and do the countdown.
