There goes the even number year theory. Both the teams who won the last 4 SC's were eliminated in the first round this year goes to show the difficulty of the salary cap. But at least we're keeping Sutter around for a while. Offseason needs? A D-Man (an annual need it seems), a 3rd C, and everyone to come back healthy/prime shape.

We're still reeling from the loss of Voynov and that brown contract might be the most undeserved contract in the NHL.

The failure to replace Voynov, and to an extent, Willie Mitchell is absolutely killing us.

Muzz and Martinez have improved fortunately, but having them step up means also having them play out of their prior roles. Having Martinez on the 3rd pairing provided supreme depth in the blue line. Having Muzz as the 3rd best d-man on the team was another luxury. Now he has to be what Slava used to be for us.

Center depth needs work too. Vinny has retired and we need a vet like Stoll circa 2012-2014 back there.

Can we sign Stamkos and trade Brown without any salary coming back?

Yeah, right. LOL.

We can definitely get Stamkos if we trade Brown(picks will have to be included).

After that we'll probably have enough money to sign 1 defensemen and the rest of the roster will probably filled by the farm.

Stamkos is a FA.

Gaborik + Brown contract is ruining us. Couple that with losing Lucic this year..let's see how Deano prevails.

Everything I've heard is that Lucic wants to return and the team wants him back.

Everything has aligned for them this season so far. Worst part is they just don't seem to have really elevated their game from the regular season. The whole playoffs hasn't been as physical or intense as in series past. Hoping the Stanley Cup Finals will be different.... and SJ doesn't win. They've been extremely fortunate salary cap wise with their team and that's allowed them to create the depth that they have. Look at their cap numbers. Thornton is the highest cap hit at only $6.75 million. They've got a pretty decent window to compete.

But enough about San Jose. The Kings, especially Lombardi, have a lot of big decisions to make. They have too many long term contracts tied up, too many holes to fill, and very little depth in terms of prospects and draft picks with little money to spend. Their salary cap is hellish right now.

The Sharks have always had this type of talent. I'm not surprised that they've finally made a deep run. I know that we came back from 0-3 to beat them in '14, but that team has always scared me. Their top line is just so damn dangerous. Thornton is so skilled and so big that when he has the puck, it seems like you can't really do much to deter him from doing what he wants to do. And of course, Pavelski is just a true sniper. And obviously, they have a lot of depth now, too. Burns is another mountain of a man who is an awesome offensive defenseman, and he's not a liability on D. Vlasic is one of the better defensive D men in hockey, and I can't understate how big his loss was for the Sharks against us in '14.

If Martin Jones doesn't choke it for them, I think they are going to win the Cup this season. Just feels like it's their time.

It has leaked that the Kings plan to strip Brown of the Team Captain role.

I find that a bit odd, although he hasn't played very well the last couple of years, I have never felt it had anything to do with effort.

So I don't really understand this...is it to embarrass him? Make his agent demand a trade? Or is the Team Captain role somehow more important than I thought it was, isn't it mostly ceremonial?

I saw this too. It's sad. I don't get it either. I know he's lost a step but it just seems mean. Maybe I don't understand hockey enough but why is it necessary to strip him of it? He clearly hasn't been even a top 3 player on the team for a long time now, but he always seemed like a good leader. I didn't think it was that important to have a top player be Captain. It certainly worked for the Kings. I know they are cap limitations but I wish they'd just trade or cut him. This is humiliating. He's been Captain for so long and has Captained 2 Cup winning teams, only American to do so.

Stripping Brown of the captaincy seemed like a foregone conclusion based on comments earlier in the year when Kopitar signed his extension. Lombardi spoke about the leadership core of the team and Brown's name wasn't mentioned... an early sign that this move was eventually going to happen. Brown just couldn't produce the numbers on the ice, but he certainly led off the ice by being a great citizen and representative of the team and he took the role seriously. Hopefully he can find his game again without the added pressure of the captaincy looming over him, but most likely he'll be moved off for salary cap purposes in some way in the next couple of seasons. I can see the expansion team taking him to become the new captain of their team.

If Kopitar becomes the next captain, he needs to step up his game even more and elevate it to Captain Serious' level. Anze needs to stay in LA the entire offseason like Brown does and show leadership off the ice in the local community and team-wise by training in the city with the rest of the boys.

If anyone showed the leadership qualities of a Kings-type player, it's Matt Greene and Justin Williams. Too bad Greene is hurt and not one of their top players and the other left to Washington. Their absences really hurt the team the most. Heck, even though Mike Richards screwed himself and the Kings, his voice in the locker room also played a huge role in leading the team back from the dead many times.

This seems to be the first step in a series of many steps the Kings will take to try to regain their place among the NHL's elite. They've got a ton of work to do.

The last couple of seasons have been hard to take as Kings fans. Losing talent and bringing in hired guns that cost a lot and didn't pan out. The drafts not producing any NHL top 6 or top 4-Dmen talent. Few top end prospects and no salary cap room with players on very long contracts. The organization has finally reached the level where they're one of the top franchises and they've slowly been losing their way. I'm hoping that management really does look at themselves to start making improvements in all areas.

Way to go Pens (and I hate that team)! I couldn't imagine the Warriors and Sharks winning titles in the same year.

Ugh. Screw that. I'm so glad the pens won too.
I know SJ is considered the bay but, that would be like LA people rooting for the Padres. It's still Socal right? Jesus, they'll find any reason to root for any team.

Need that consistent beast play for all 82 games. Those mid-season slumps definitely need to go now.

I'm guessing DD and JC are natural choices for the A's.

As long as he does it late season, I'm fine.

Doughty must be an Alt because he all but carries our D-men.

Whelp... That trade certainly netted the Kings nothing. Even worse is what they gave up in the trade. Martin Jones, a first-rounder that would've been Kyle Connor, and Colin Miller. Lombardi needs to re-stock the system and stop making trades that give up first rounders.

Dean just needs to follow his old formula for success... poaching the Columbus Blue Jackets for star players for minimal loss.

Congrats Doughty on getting the Norris! Well deserved and he should've gotten multiple ones earlier.

Doughty wins the Norris, and Kopitar wins the Selke. Excellent.

Not so excellent is us getting 1 year of Lucic and giving up what we did.
