Luke's time in broadcasting helped prepare him for the PR related duties of being head coach of a team like the Lakers. You can already see that at work within the first two days of his official introduction.
Over the last couple years the Laker narrative has been forged under historic losing and the lack of a quality front man. Jim has been mostly absent and generally clumsy. Jeanie has been destructive. Jackson has been subtly undercutting. The media has cashed in on the negativity by perpetuating and sensationalizing the difficulties. Scott was a horrible front man, often criticizing his players and making it clear that KFT and lack of talent was an organizational imposition.
Now you have Luke who quit literally has said we are going to bring joy back to the process, work from the ground up and build team first. Without even making a promise to be competitive, he's already recast the narrative to one of progress and togetherness. There will still be those trying to tear that down. But having a quality front man was a huge need for LA and now we have one. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Chip off the old block!
Luke Walton: Equal parts champion, beach volleyball bum, Zen Master in new Lakers coach
Quote: | For warm-ups, they run a layup line and shoot hoops on a portable basket they drag onto the sand. They call their tent the Forum Club. Under a cadet blue sky, the toned bronze renegades of Manhattan Beach volleyball draw the attention of thousands of onlookers as they rush onto the sand, bearing the symbols of their peculiar faith.
They wear afro-style wigs and golden Lakers jerseys in strict adherence to the scripture that guides their devotion: the ’80s Chevy Chase comedy film “Fletch.”
In the middle of the highly competitive and even more irregular spectacle that unfolds every July, the Charlie Saikley 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament, is an easily recognized 6-foot-8 player who is a menacing protector on the front line and an able passer, just as he was as an NBA player. |

Luke Walton told me “I would’ve tried” to take Brandon Ingram with first pick overall, if Lakers were picking at number one. |

That's what I thought when he said that he got the player that he wanted on draft night. It sounded like he would have taken Ingram number 1 if he had the pick. |

Now that's interesting. Simmons is obviously more talented, but Luke was high on Ingram's defensive IQ/potential.
It's also possible he gave a diplomatic answer so as not to malign Ingram in any way, shape or form. |

honestly i am a little underwhelmed by the coaching staff Luke has put together as of now.
Mitch said Luke sees himself as the offensive coach so I am waiting for the defensive coach.
I am not complaining at all. just saying |

This coaching staff with 3 guys is more competent that the entire last full staff.
Besides, I think he's going to start really locking in some quality guys that can put together the type of culture he wants more than X's and O's |

I believe it. I mean, many of us here wanted Ingram over Simmons. I'm not sure if we were just being hostages to the situation though. |

I think his best attribute as coach is in nurturing the players development and confidence, also team play and playing for each other. Basketball Chemistry 101. |
