Rather long in the tooth to be a dad at that age eh?

Boom, Baby! At 50, Reggie Miller has new child

Insert your favorite "Boom Baby" joke here.

Former Indiana Pacer great Reggie Miller is a new father.

On Monday, he posted a photo of himself with a baby girl laying on his chest on Instagram with the caption "Never let go!! #LionessPaw #Shotgun ready."

Miller played in the NBA from 1987-2005, his entire career with the Pacers.

While he was with the Pacers, he was known for his 3-point shooting.

Miller turned 50 last August.

My parents had me when they were in their early 40s and that was considered highly an unusual at the time. Now that I am in my mid 40s I can't imagine even wanting a newborn at 50.

This reminds me of the fantastic line from when Harry Met Sally when Sally was saying that men can keep having babies into their 80s look at Charlie Chaplin and Harry replied "Yeah but he was too told to pick them up...

But anyway congratulations Reggie

Not my cup of tea, but this is not unusual when viewed historically. Successful/ affluent men who desired to have children late in life have always done so.

True but Janet Jackson is apparently having her first child at 50 and there are other women that have kids later in life(Laura Linney was 49)

And that's met with concern and comments of being too old etc(which I admit I agree with) I think men shouldn't be exempt from that either.

Stupid and selfish. Poor kid.

We had a couple of those "younger women old men have a baby together things" around here. Two of the kids have no father anymore - not even 10 years old. And the women have depressions because they have a hard time being a single mum.

Oh and it is really great if you have to explain everyday that it is not your grandfather that is picking you up from kindergarten.

That's where I'm coming from yes I know people can die at any time and that there are kids who have no business being parents either but there can be a happy medium right?

Isn't that more for health reasons?

For women yes but for some reason if a man is a father in his 80s(See Tony Randall) that's considered acceptable and admirable even though its very likely he won't be around for very long.

A woman gets pregnant in her late 40s/early 50s they get way more critcism

50 is old to start a family, but not as old as you characterize it.
Miller is wealthy and apparently healthy enough to care for his family for as long as he has left, and long after that.
Kids in poor/dangerous neighborhoods are missing their parents who lived to be half of Reggie's age, so who's really selfish?

I have a hard time believing any substantial amount of the pop thinks its ok for an 80 year old man to have children, let alone find him admirable for it.
As for women getting more criticism for having late pregnancies, there is hard scientific data that shows astronomical increases in birth defects as women have pregnancies past 35. The increase in birth defects from older fathers is not as considerable.
