What this really highlights is how important the "Police" are to minority communities and the role they play. Interestingly enough non AA liberals are seeking to discredit that and or take advantage of it. You are selling these communities on the pretense that the “Police Officer" is to blame for 30-40 years of failed liberal polices........ Can we say Hoodwicked?

Now the Police refuse to be proactive in protecting these communities and more minorities suffer as a result.

"Police" are important to all communities.

Being proactive is good police work if done with real intent to prevent crime. There was no reason to stop Freddie Gray and the stop resulted in his death.

Investigation into the policing policies of BPD reveal the stop if suspicious were discriminatory, considered harassment. I don't have a number but If I had to wager a guess, I'd guess 80% or higher of the stops were of Black men or women. Don't White people look suspicious?

If you believe the spike in crime is because the police are no longer being proactive I have a bridge between Long Beach and San Pedro for sale. I've done some recent renovations, it's in very good shape.

The spike in crime is most likely a result of Gray's death. Baltimore is a city living in destitute conditions, a city on edge. Grays death released the Kraken.

Not to be outdone by Baltimore, Chicago joined in the holiday weekend killing spree:

Quote:
Violence surged in major cities during Memorial Day weekend, bringing records for homicides in Chicago and Baltimore after years of declining crime.

Nine murders and nearly 30 shootings during the weekend brought Baltimore's monthly homicide toll to its highest point in more than 15 years,.

The Memorial Day weekend was a bloody one in Chicago, where at least 12 people were killed and 44 wounded in gun violence from Friday night to Tuesday morning. The rash of violence continues a trend of killings and shootings that began this year. The city recorded the fewest homicides in decades last year.

Even before this weekend's incidents, murders were up 17 percent, and non-fatal shootings had jumped 24 percent from the same time last year, according to Chicago Police Department statistics.

Memorial Weekend Killing Spree

In fact, violent crime has been on the upswing for the past 3 years after a decade long decline, shooting a big hole in the theory that more aggressive police tactics were the cause for the fall, as opposed to the tradition of crime lowering following times of economic growth & rising following economic slides.

Quote:
Violent crime in the United States rose for the second year in a row, a government report said Thursday, indicating that the nation's two-decade decline in crime has ended

Violent Crime Again on the Rise

An interesting article by an ex cop:

LINK

Excerpts:

Quote:
It is not only white officers who abuse their authority. The effect of institutional racism is such that no matter what color the officer abusing the citizen is, in the vast majority of those cases of abuse that citizen will be black or brown. That is what is allowed

And no matter what an officer has done to a black person, that officer can always cover himself in the running narrative of heroism, risk, and sacrifice that is available to a uniformed police officer by virtue of simply reporting for duty. Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo was recently acquitted of all charges against him in the shooting deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams, both black and unarmed. Thirteen Cleveland police officers fired 137 shots at them. Brelo, having reloaded at some point during the shooting, fired 49 of the 137 shots. He took his final 15 shots at them after all the other officers stopped firing (122 shots at that point) and, "fearing for his life," he jumped onto the hood of the car and shot 15 times through the windshield.

Not only was this excessive, it was tactically asinine if Brelo believed they were armed and firing. But they weren't armed, and they weren't firing. Judge John O'Donnell acquitted Brelo under the rationale that because he couldn't determine which shots actually killed Russell and Williams, no one is guilty.

When you take a job as a police officer, you do so voluntarily. You understand the risks associated with the work. But because you signed on to do a dangerous job does not mean you are then allowed to violate the human rights, civil rights, and civil liberties of the people you serve. It's the opposite. You should protect those rights, and when you don't you should be held accountable. That simple statement will be received by police apologists as "anti-cop." It is not.

Every officer in the country should be wearing a body camera that remains activated throughout any interaction they have with the public while on duty. There is no reasonable expectation of privacy for officers when they are on duty and in service to the public. Citizens must also have the right to record police officers as they carry out their public service, provided that they are at a safe distance, based on the circumstances, and not interfering. Witnessing an interaction does not by itself constitute interference.

Judge denies key defense motions in case of Freddie Gray's death

LINK

The outcome of this case can possibly set a precedent. If there are convictions it may affect the way suspects are treated by arresting officers.

The family of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man whose death from a spinal cord injury while in police custody set off riots in Baltimore in April, has reached a $6.4 million settlement with the city, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced Tuesday.

The proposed settlement, which will be taken up by the Board of Estimates — the panel that approves contracts and purchases for the city — at its meeting on Wednesday, does not “constitute an admission of liability on the part of the city, the Baltimore Police Department, individual Baltimore Police officers,” or anyone else who might be responsible for Mr. Gray’s death, Ms. Rawlings-Blake said in a statement.

Honestly, I wish there was some way to just usurp local prosecution of police officers. Completely federalize the process. The relationship between local law enforcement, prosecutors and the county courts is just too incestuous.

There's a conflict. The Gray family was awarded a $6.4 million dollar settlement for the death of Freddie Gray but this officer and most likely all others are being found not guilty of causing his death. If they're innocent why pay?

Because they're innocent of the charges they're on trial for, but still liable for their negligence.

Right, forgot about the mayor awarding a civil settlement.

Not guilty, no way these people are innocent. Police can and will always be able to get away with murder unless some drastic changes happen, which won't happen so yay more murders

Exactly. These people intended to take their various issues out on Gray. This was not about simply arresting and transporting a suspect in order to process them. This was an intentionally brutal act meant to "teach someone a 'lesson'".

The whole thing was textbook Abuse Under the Color of Authority. Until we actually start holding people who abuse their authority criminally responsible, it will never go away.

Think about it. OJ revisited. Not saying same but verdict says not guilty. It doesn't say they're innocent.
