I am not sure why, but it is funny to me that the Clippers are making moves to cut their lux tax bill. Young Frankenstein paid bullions for that team but has to make moves to save a million.

It could be they're at their core the same ol' Clippers. They'd like to compete for a title, but they're not willing to pay the price to achieve it.

The Lakers have their young core pretty well spaced out in terms of when they will be up for raises:

Randle and Brown after next season (2018)
Nance, Russell, and zubac the following year (2019)
Clarkson and Ingram the year after that (2020)

Among those players though, who will (to borrow a phrase from LA Kings' GM Dean Lombardi) have a Lakers tattoo on their ass? Essentially, who among them will sacrifice a bit for the team? I think the Randle contract will be the most telling. And I hope the Lakers don't fall into the hole the LA Kings have gotten themselves into with regards to contracts. The later years of those Mozgov and Deng contracts are worrisome if they become anchors for non-productive players.

I really hate the Lakers gave both Deng/Mozgov 4 year deals. 3 year deals with the last year a TO or unguranteed would of helped us keep our cap flexibility to go after guys like Paul George & DMC in the future

Lakers can go after them as is.

Right now for 2018 we would have 9 players under contract for 74M. With cap holds we would be at about 76M. So you're right we would have 1 max contact to use in 2017 or 2018. Without Mozgov/Deng on the books in year 3 of their deals, we could of had a chance at landing both Westbrook (2017) and DMC (2018). But with how we have striked out in fre agency that wouldn't of been likely regardes. The flexibility still would of been nice, espically when you consider both Deng and Mozgov will be declining majorly in year 3 and 4

As I posted a bit ago, LA can still get to a max in 2017 and 2018. Lou goes out in 2017 and they can sign westbrook. In 2018, and they have a shot at George or DMC, they merely need to amnesty one of deng or Mozgov, and move one of their mid tier contracts, like Randle. Worst comes to worst, randle is restricted so they don't even have to pay him. Think of it like Harrison Barnes for GS, where he let him walk when they landed Durant.
