CNN reporting one of the shooters was shouting "Allahu Akbar" and Fox News is saying a shooter was right-wing ultranationalist. Probably best to wait this one out to get full information before jumping to conclusions.

Yup, germany has both of these elements. Several sources have reported anti-foreigner shouting, so this was probably a racist white nationalist terrorist.

This has been retracted. No background or motives confirmed yet. Fasten your seatbelts!

A gun attack at a Munich shopping centre which left nine people dead was carried out by one gunman who then killed himself, police have said.

A huge manhunt was launched following reports that up to three gunmen had been involved in the attack at the Olympia centre.

The body of the suspect was found about 1km (0.6 miles) from the shopping centre and police used a robot to check it for explosives.

The motive for the attack is unclear.

The suspect was an 18-year-old Iranian who lived in Munich, police told a news conference, but his motive is unclear.

Tragic. Unfortunately, very predictable.

Mental illness is the common thread in these mass shootings. It's been confirmed this one was no exception. My cousin and his family recently moved to Munich too. Scary.

It's wierd that nobody's talking about how he got his gun and 300 ammunations for it and where did he learn to use it. I know it would be pretty standard in the U.S. but it's not in germany.

Gun nuts are no different than any other fetishists. Just like kiddie porn collectors, no matter how many restrictions you apply, they'll still find a path to get what they crave.

Some people call that mental illness, some call it organized religion.

The Munich shooter appears to have had more in common with Adam Lanza and Anders Behring Breivik, than with the home-grown, ISIS inspired terrorists.

That comparison is pretty extreme.

What I mean is that the media (at least here in France) hasn't even touched the subject. I guess it's gonna be part of the investigation though (how did a 19 years old get a glock and 300 ammunitions for it). I understand that if you want something you'll find a way but still it's really not standard for a european kid to get such things.

Apparently the guy had been harrassed by some turkish people before at school and wanted payback. He bought his glock on the 'darknet'. They found 58 bullets on the scene and 300 in his backpack. He also created a fake girl facebook account where he invited people at that McDonald to get free food.

France has much, much, much lower incidents of gun violence. That's probably why.

What exactly is the surprise here?

We have persisted in actively fueling the refugee crisis throughout the Middle East for literally dozens of years. We have also allowed our elected officials to sublet responsibility for U.S. foreign policy decisions to chickenhawk rounding errors who subordinate our ACTUAL national interests to those of the foreign special interest juggernauts for whom they are beholden. Make no mistake ... the inevitable consequence of this kind of legacy is always the same. The oppressed ALWAYS get around to developing enough of a searing hatred for their oppressors that they will seek retribution whenever and wherever they can find it ... haven't we seen this movie before?

These global developments are tragic and scary, especially for those amongst us with children. It's troubling to have a ten year old growing up in this world. But we don't need to look anywhere else but right here at home to understand why these attacks are becoming the "new normal". The fact is that U.S. foreign policy is at the epicenter of the burgeoning hostility that has been spilling over for years. And as long as those benefitting from these foreign policy abuses continue to shout down those seeking to highlight the error in our collective ways (and once again, make no mistake ... there are beneficiaries who very clearly capitalize on our doing the dirty work on their behalf), we'll continue to spiral downward into chaos.

So allow me to be more blunt for a moment: we're unambiguously (bleep) as a nation until we can show the global community that we will consistently and fairly treat all non-Americans the same. Sorry, guys ... the strategic interests canard has run its course ... 21st century global leadership is going to require something different than the status quo of the past 60 - 75 years.

Police in Munich say they have arrested a 16-year-old Afghan friend of David Ali Sonboly, who killed nine people at a Munich shopping centre on Friday.

They say the teenager is under investigation for failing to report the attacker's plans, and that he could have been an accomplice.

Sonboly, 18, had been planning his attack for a year, police said earlier.

They say he had a Glock pistol which he may have bought on the so-called dark net.

The statement says the youth reported to police immediately after the shooting on Friday, and was interviewed as somebody with a connection to the attacker.

But in the course of the interviews, they discovered discrepancies in his statements.

They say they are now investigating him on suspicion of failing to report a planned crime.

The attacker himself had put up a post on a fake Facebook account before his attack, inviting people to come to the fast food restaurant where the shooting happened.
'Not specifically targeted'

Seven of the dead in Friday's shooting at the Olympia shopping centre were were teenagers - two Turks, two Germans, a Hungarian, a Greek and a Kosovan.

A further 35 people were injured, but only four of them have bullet wounds - many were hurt while fleeing the scene.

State government officials told a news conference that the victims of the attack had not been specifically targeted and were not classmates of the gunman.

Robert Heimberger, head of Bavaria's criminal police, said the gunman had been planning the attack since he paid a visit last year to the town of Winnenden - the scene of a previous school shooting in 2009 - and took photographs.

He said it was likely the Glock pistol - which had been reactivated - was bought on the "dark net" market, an area accessible only with the use of special software. It had been a theatre prop, but had been restored to fully functioning.

Sonboly was said to be a keen player of "first-person shooter" video games.

police had not found the manifesto of Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik when they searched the gunman's room at his parents' flat.

A day earlier, officials had raised the possibility of a link to Breivik, whose own attack was carried out five years earlier to the day.

The Munich prosecutors' office told the news conference that the gunman had spent two months as an inpatient at a mental care facility in 2015 and was afterwards treated as an outpatient.

"The suspect had fears of contact with others" and also depression, Thomas Steinkraus-Koch said.
