Beth Penna Pereira, a psychologist from Rio’s high-end Leblon neighborhood, experienced the cuts first hand when her purse was stolen at a neighborhood bakery. When she went to the local precinct to report the incident she left empty-handed.
“We don’t have paper for the incident report. None of the printers are working ... We haven’t received any supplies for a while,’” she recalled the officer saying.
“I’m feeling more insecure, more unprotected, more helpless,” she said.
It kind of still is.
Sounds like a first hand account of the crime I've heard. From what I've heard, , best not to attract attention with an accessories like watches, jewelry, etc.

That's sad. I can just picture civic services getting worse after the Olympics are over. A lot of countries lose money by hosting the Olympics and their economy is not doing so well. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant

I understand the obvious concerns with having the Olympics in Rio. But I also understand the flip side.
How do you help an impoverished city/country? By ignoring them? Or by giving them an economic boost (the commerce that will come from the Olympics)?
I guess the philanthropist point of view is the right moral choice. Even with the risks to the health and safety of the athletes.
BUT the money generated from the Olympics needs to find it's way to the most needy. Needs to be used to improve the lives of the average Brazilian citizen. But given the well-documented history of government corruption in Brazil. I doubt the average Brazilian will have his life improved by the commerce brought in during the summer games. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better”

This isn't necessarily true. Recent history has shown that profit/loss can go either way. These Olympics has the second highest taxpayer (inflation adjusted) contributions by a hair behind Athens. I don't think it's going to bode well.
2014 World Cup in Brazil looks to have been a financial disaster too. There's a reason the public in Brazil was against it.

They will have to change the mentality of requiring cities that host the Olympics to build brand new infrastructure. It would also cut down on corruption as well. So instead of just 2 cities bidding for the Olympics like the 2022 Winter Olympics, a lot more cities would be back in play. It would also result in it being profitable once again for the host cities and not just the IOC.

I'd agree with that if this were a charitable event, but it's not. The committee, IMO, needs to do a better job of vetting locales to ensure the athletes safety.
Looking at these massive grandstands for events like water polo...why do they even bother? Theres barely anyone there and most of the people that are watching are the TV audience. No wonder the Brazilian people are protesting.

Absolutely puzzled by this......
Tennis games, basketball games, people avoid both ends of the court and try to sit in the middle to see both teams better. For women's beach volleyball the best seats are at both ends. _________________ “Properly read, the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.”

Seems like the Olympics are just a way for NBC to push human interest stories, lots of commercials, with barely any live events on the main NBC channel. Don't forget the "events" they show in primetime are heavily edited so much so that we barely get a sprinkle of action before they jump to another event so any satisfaction we might get in 5 minutes of viewing is lost.
