I've seen it viewed both way.
Some people consider it a Duncan personal failure and like to mock him for only having a bronze.
Some consider Duncan a victim of a shoddy system that put together a bad team around him and didn't have practices.
You'll have no end of opinions on this -- some believe Duncan was exposed; some believe he hated the rules in place in 2004 (which were revised significantly for the next Olympics); some believe he himself played well, but was surrounded by a bad team of young players after other stars declined to take part; some feel he was the leader of the team and should take full blame for the disaster.
After the debacle, there was so much mea culpa-ing, and the whole system was changed so much, that it was conceded that things were bad from A to Z, so you'll never get uniform opinion on how much blame Duncan personally deserves. |
Duncan couldn't carry. If Kobe was able to play with that team they would have won gold. |
You never know. The big problem was lack of perimeter defense and 3-point shooting, and Kobe probably wouldn't have gotten on his teammates more than Duncan.
They could have used Kobe, Nash, Kidd, and Artest. But that's easy to see in hindsight, which is why they changed stuff up so much the next time around. |

It was just a really badly constructed team that didn't take the games seriously. Hard for me to really blame one player for 2004 when it was a leaky boat with holes all over the place. |

DWIGHT JONES, FORMER OLYMPIAN, NBA BIG MAN (former Laker), DIES AT 64
R.I.P.
Quote: | A first-round pick of the Atlanta Hawks in 1973, Jones would go on to play for his hometown Rockets, as well as the Bulls and Lakers. Jones retired in 1984 after playing 766 NBA regular season games, amassing career averages of 8.1 ppg and 5.9 rpg.
Jones was also known for his participation in the controversial 1972 Olympics Men’s Basketball finals, when Team USA lost (were cheated out of) the gold medal game in overtime against the Soviet Union. |

Team USA rolls by Nigeria in final Olympic tuneup 110 - 66
Quote: | Four years ago in a record-setting romp, Team USA turned the game into an offensive circus. This time it was a defensive vise used to squeezed the life out of Nigeria 110-66 on Monday night at Toyota Center.
Carmelo Anthony led the way with 19 points, Klay Thompson scored 17, Kevin Durant 14, DeMar DeRozan 13 and DeAndre Jordan and DeMarcus Cousins 10 each.
The victory enabled Team USA to complete its Olympic warmup tour with a 5-0 record, beating Argentina, China (twice), Venezuela and Nigeria by an average margin of 43 points. |

History of Lakers In the Olympics
Quote: | Heading into the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Jose Calderon and Marcelo Huertas will continue a legacy of Lakers performing on international basketball’s greatest stage.
While some had not yet played for the Lakers before participating in the Olympics (and thus not officially representing the purple and gold), many — including legends like Jerry West, Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant — made Los Angeles proud with their contributions at the Games.
Over the last 56 years, 10 different Lakers have played for their country in search for gold. |

USA LINEUP NUMBERS AND NOTES
Quote: | With coach Mike Krzyzewski starting players in their NBA or home city, the U.S. used five different starting lineups in the five games, and all 12 players started at least once. In total, Krzyzewski used 83 different lineups on the exhibition tour. Only six of those lineups played in more than one game, and none played in more than two. No five-man unit got extended run together. |

USA Men’s National Team Heads To Rio With Sights On The Gold
Quote: | After another convincing exhibition win on Monday night, several members of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team were asked about their biggest priority as they head to Rio for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Is it defense or rebounding or maybe 3-point shooting?
Kevin Durant gave the simplest yet most definitive answer.
“We’ve just got to win,” Durant said. “No matter how well it goes, we just want to win. That’s all we worry about. Everything else will take care of itself. We’ve just got to win.”
USA Basketball Men’s National Team head coach Mike Krzyzewski canceled the team’s final practice on Tuesday so the players could focus on their own individual work on their final day in Houston before departing for Rio on Tuesday night.
“A lot of times, that’s what they need more than practice,” Krzyzewski said. “They need to get back to their individual routines so that they’re ready. And then when we leave, it’s off, hopefully, to a gold medal.” |

I would expect nothing less than another 50 point ass whooping of Team China today. |

I also remember watching an Olympics without Teofilo Stevenson, or without Oskar Schmidt. _________________ “Properly read, the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.”

Australia ran a lot of the sets & concepts that I expect the Lakers to run next year. Great spacing + read & react principles. |

Even Bogut was dribbling to the basket. The Aussies have a solid team, not US or Spain or Lithuania level, but they'd give the other teams a good fight.

Yeah, they're very well coached and have just enough pro-caliber guys to do damage. |

Wow, France lost by 21? I've been reading about how they might be the second best team in the tournament and how they could actually have a small chance to upset USA. |
