Former Grizzlies announcer arrested, accused of taking illicit pictures
Two days after the Downtown Church fired Rick Trotter because of "deception and moral failures of a sexual nature," the Memphis Police Department opened an investigation into the Grizzlies announcer.
On Tuesday, that investigation led police to issue an arrest warrant for Trotter on four counts of charges that he photographed someone without their consent at the Downtown Church. The warrant added that there were at least three reported victims, and that Trotter was "making upskirt videos of church members," apparently "while services were going on."
Just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Trotter, 40, was booked into the Shelby County Jail. He was being held on $70,000 bond, officials said.
The Grizzlies parted ways with Trotter last month, but didn't announce that until Tuesday, when news of the arrest warrant broke.
"Rick Trotter is no longer affiliated with the Grizzlies organization. We have no further comment on the matter," the team said in a statement.
A statement released Tuesday by his former church, which holds services at Central Station on South Main and is part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church denomination, hinted at what the warrant spells out.
"We, the elders of Downtown Church, are deeply saddened to announce that, effective May 27, Rick Trotter was terminated as an employee of Downtown Church. This was the result of deception and moral failures of a sexual nature.
"As you can imagine, this revelation has been deeply devastating to all of us. We, as elders, have come around his wife and children offering spiritual, emotional and financial support. We will continue to support and encourage them, and we know the Downtown Church family will follow suit.
"We have responded swiftly as information has emerged, with counsel from trusted professionals. As we move forward in this process, we want the congregation to know we are fully committed to operating with integrity and transparency."
Before being hired on at Downtown Church, Trotter was an employee of Fellowship Memphis. He was also let go from that church.
The Grizzlies chose Trotter as their new announcer in 2006, picking someone who had no prior experience in that field. Before that, he was managing a Chick-fil-A in Atlanta but moved to Memphis to work with his church.
Although Trotter shows no serious prior arrest record in Memphis, he was arrested for shoplifting in Atlanta in the mid-1990s.
Numerous messages left for Trotter and his family as well as officials with both the Downtown Church and Fellowship Memphis were not returned Tuesday

Quote: | Ex-Grizzlies PA announcer gets 60 days, must register as a sex offender for 'up skirt' videos

Memphis Crime Stoppers allows people to anonymously submit tips to crimes they may have witnessed. Here are several ways you can submit a tip to Crime Stoppers. Wochit
Rick Trotter, once the voice of the Memphis Grizzlies, was sentenced last week to 60 days behind bars after pleading guilty to four counts of photographing people without their consent, a Class A misdemeanor.
After his 60 days at the Shelby County Correctional Center, Trotter will remain on probation until May 1, 2022, and must register as a nonviolent sex offender, court records state. He is also ordered to have no contact with the victims.
Trotter, 41, whose legal name is Dwayne Trotter, was arrested on Aug. 9, 2016. According the arrest affidavit, he was caught kneeling behind a woman with his cellphone making an "up skirt" video during services at the Downtown Church, where he was an employee.
And in May 2016, four women signed a statement confirming they were the individuals on the videos found on Trotter’s church-issued laptop.
After his arrest, Trotter waived his rights and admitted in a written statement to videoing those women with his cell phone.
Trotter was fired by the Grizzlies a month before his arrest. He joined the Grizzlies in 2006.
He was formerly employed by Fellowship Memphis, where several women and minors said he used a hidden camera in a restroom to record them. Trotter was let go by the church, but no charges were filed.
Those women told The Commercial Appeal they were discouraged by church officials from filing charges to avoid affecting Trotter's life and career.
Trotter is scheduled to report to the correctional center on May 21. |

This is sick. How does this guy go from working at Chick-Fil-A, to becoming an announcer for an NBA team, with no prior experience? Then, this dummy does something like this. _________________ Defense is my business, and business is good! |
