I suspect huertas got that contract for two reasons:

As an offset for playing so cheaply last year, and because he's basically providing some coaching on the floor in how to attack and pass off the dribble for the youngsters.

Remember, LA could not have known they had the Calderon Trade at the time they had to make their qualifying offer to huertas, and they likely had already made him a gentleman's agreement.

Did he take a pay cut from what he was making in Europe?

Frankly, Huertas was such a TO machine that he needs some advice himself.

Huertas did get a bit cute on some passes, but overall, his assist to turnover ratio and turnovers per minute were not anywhere near out of line for a guy with the ball as much as he had it, much less in as stagnant a scheme as we played.

I thought it was the crossovers and dribbling that really got him in trouble. Maybe there was an adjustment from playing Europe that he never made that he'll make now.

Actually, his assist to turnover ratio and per minute turnover rate improved late in the season, even though Scott had him playing significant minutes against starters...

At the end of the day, Huertas is a high iq player with a lot of skill and know how who simply can't defend well at the nba level and physically can't impose himself on Frontline players. But as a deep bench guy who can teach dribbling and passing angles to the youngsters, he's fine. No real on court value in games, but you don't really expect that from the bottom of the roster. Those spots are for grizzled vet practice guys and deep prospects.

Yeah, he ended the season leading the team in assist to turnover ratio (not another Laker in the top 100). Seemed like he was worse.

Calderon, incidentally, was 3rd in the league in ast-to-TO.
