Is it worth buying a 4K tv?

I see 4K TV every day at work and, while I can see the improvement over HDTV, it isn't as significant as the improvement we saw going from SD to HD.

With time, not only do the TVs improve, but also the compression technology for broadcast. Better compression leads to improved picture quality and more channel bandwidth. Right now, we're at the same stage we were at 15-years ago with HDTV content consuming huge amounts of bandwidth.

Until my HDTV breaks or there are enough 4K TV channels to watch I won't be upgrading.

Problem with 4k TV's is the lack of content....
Are there lots of sporting events broadcast in 4k? No other than the 2016 Olympics (of which NBC only showed one event per day tape delayed) on their special 4k channel which was only available on Comcast. 2014 World Cup was taped but never broadcasted and I think they only got 3 matches to test their systems.
4k movies? Yes, but they are slowly trickling out.
4k TV shows? House of Cards comes to mind. But not much content out there because of 4k high bandwidth requirements.

Love my 4k TV. All of the 1080 stuff is beautiful on it as well. Looking forward to the next Marvel series on Netflix, Luke Cage.

Buy the best TV for your budget. If you can afford it, go ahead. I needed a new TV because the old one was losing audio both in ports and the built in. I now have a 65js8500. I thought of just getting a 1080p but I went with the best looking picture for my budget at the time. I'm happy with it. Still looks great compared to this year's model and I don't have to deal with the curved fad going on right now. 4K HDR looks superb and the industry itself doesn't know what to do with the standards.

The industry prefers HDR10, but money talks and Dolby is throwing it around right now to get more backing for Dolby Vision. If they win, they collect on the licensing fees later.

However, both Samsung and Sony prefer HDR10 and are trying to push the standards that way, and neither currently supports Dolby's standard. LG and Vizio have hedged their bets and back both standards.

In theory, Dolby has a superior spec but no TV in the market can currently support their proposed Rec 2020. Hardware may in the future but there are diminishing returns if users aren't willing to pay a premium on the hardware to hit such a spec. The majority of users won't be able to tell the difference anyways especially in an uncontrolled home environment.

My mom bought that TV it's a real POS. The next day she took it back and got this:

https://www.vizio.com/d55ud1.html?utm_source=google_shopping&gclid=CNOvjvGEzs4CFQOUfgodv7wPkQ

Same price but a MUCH better TV.

I've been buying Vizio TV's for over a decade and swear by them if your looking for affordable but good quality.

Some of our old Vizio's are even still alive and working great to this day and are 8-10 years old! They refuse to die so as we grow out of them or upgrade we give them to friends and family.

Ok, this is a subject that I have recently been involved with. I had a 52" Sharp 1080p tv that I was looking to move into the bedroom and put a larger TV in my living room. I started researching TV's about 9 months ago, and my thoughts were to go BIG, I was looking in the 75" - 79" range.

The VERY BEST TV's that Best Buy had were the OLED's by LG, but they were in the $5,000 range and at least a grand more than I was willing to pay. And the largest was 65". But the 4k OLED's looked simply amazing!

Anyway, last month I found out that there were a series of new LG OLED's, with a few more bells than the previous years models, which meant the last year's model's were greatly discontinued.

I found that BuyDig (aka Beach Camera) had OLED model LG65EF9500 on sale for $3,000 - delivered. They recently went up to $3,499, but there is a vendor on eBay selling them for $2,975-delivered!

If you want to know more about the OLED technology, see this link:
http://www.techradar.com/us/news/television/oled-tv-what-you-need-to-know-1056228

If you want an unbiased review from CNET, click here:
http://www.cnet.com/products/lg-ef9500/

To recap their review (written Nov-2015): They rate this TV a "10" (out of 10) in DESIGN, FEATURES and PERFORMANCE, in VALUE they give it a "5" due to the cost being at $5,000, but at $3,000, I would gues-timate they would have given it a "10" as well!

MY REVIEW: This is without question the best TV I have ever owned and is absolutely a joy to watch. Don't sweat the lack of 4k content at this time as this TV UP-CONVERTS 1080P signals to 4k! Watching Blu-Rays is phenomenal! I highly recommend an OLED TV to anyone who wants the absolute best picture available.

Now, don't be put off that Sony & Samsung are not using OLED panels, believe me when I say, no matter what they say to the media, they WISH they had OLED's, but since LG has their own OLED factories, it would mean purchasing from their competitor. However, Panasonic and Philips are now buying OLED panels from LG and either now have or will soon have OLED models coming out soon.

OLED is my next big jump. Prices are starting to come down but still a bit too pricey.

I personally buy TVs to keep around for 5+ years. At the moment, 4k content isn't as widespread. But 4 years down the road, who knows? Coupled that with the fact that 4k TV's are fairly affordable, I don't see why you wouldn't want to invest in a 4k TV. And the keyword here is invest. It's a big purchase so you want to make sure it meets your needs now and in the future.

Most if not all of Netflix original programming is in 4k now. They also have a pretty big selection of movies and shows available in 4k.

I'm not an early adopter by any means but I will say I'm glad I went 4k. I keep my TV's on average 5-7 years. I'm a year into my 4k and don't regret it.

As for the leap between SD/HD vs. HD/4k posted above, I agree. It's not a mind blowing difference however, it is significant enough to go for it.

If you're in the market for a new TV do it. Go 4k. If money is an issue do like me and buy it from a Costco clearance warehouse and get last year's model for 40-60% off to bridge the price gap. There's not a huge difference between a new 2015 4k TV and a new 2016 model.

Also as posted go with the full panel OLED. Don't do LED or "Backlit" LED.
I don't subscribe to anything. I'm not going to pay $10 a month when I can just download what I want to watch

Damn, thanks for the input.

I used rtings.com and it got very good ratings all around. Will definitely do some more research now.

Thanks!

You planning on watching live Sports?

If so, I would HIGHLY recommend getting a faster Refresh Rate than 60hz, as that will most likely pixalate on you during fast moving plays.

Get 120 or even 240.

I suggest looking at:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-55-class-54-6-diag--led-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-gray-black/5029400.p?id=bb5029400&skuId=5029400

or if you don't mind a curved tv, this one is priced $300 off:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-55-class-54-6-diag--led-curved-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-silver/5216200.p?id=bb5216200&skuId=5216200

As far as Vizio, I've never owned one, BB has a 65" one for $5,500, so it would appear they are making some high-end gear instead of the bottom-end stuff they started with. Personally I would never buy one, but then again I would never buy a Nissan or Volkswagen..

I'd say it's more of a Honda or Toyota but good analogy.

And wow that LG is really nice!

I wouldn't say you were ahead of the curve if you bought a 1080p just a few years ago. I bought my first one in 2008 and it was already widespread by then.

Actually, that's a 60hz TV. One trick TV manufacturers use is designing a creative name for their software "enhancements" that don't do much to "double" the supposed refresh rate. So a Motion Rate 120 is really 60hz, 240 is 120hz, etc. For me, it's quite a pronounced difference, especially for a 4K tv over 50 inches.
