Ex-NBA player Travis Outlaw under investigation

NBA forward and Starkville native Travis Outlaw is under “investigation for a possible scheduled narcotics violation,” multiple law enforcement officials said Friday.

According to three sources, Outlaw, 30, is being investigated for receiving “approximately a pound or less” of marijuana in the mail in the Golden Triangle.

The officials asked that they and their agencies not be named at this time. The investigation, which reportedly began as a joint effort, is currently taking place in Oktibbeha County, the law enforcement officials said. Outlaw has not been arrested, according to records at the Oktibbeha County Jail.

Outlaw, a graduate of Starkville High, was selected out of high school by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 2003 NBA Draft.

Outlaw was a McDonald’s All-American with LeBron James and Chris Paul, as well as a Parade All-American and a third-team All-USA selection by USA Today. Outlaw was All-State his final three years in high school and led Starkville to a 28-3 record and a berth in the 5A championship game as a senior. He averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and six assists that season. He committed to Mississippi State before opting for the NBA Draft.

Outlaw has played 12 seasons in the NBA, which includes two stints with Portland and one with the Los Angeles Clippers, New Jersey Nets and Sacramento Kings.

The Kings traded Outlaw to the New York Knicks last August, and he was traded again to the Philadelphia 76ers in October when he was waived. He did not play last season.

Outlaw has averaged 8.5 points and 3.2 rebounds over his career, including career-bests of 13.3 points and 4.6 rebounds with Portland in 2007-08.

The city of Starkville has an official Travis Outlaw Day and named a sports complex in his honor. He was the host for The Elite “Travis Outlaw” Basic Skills and Fundamentals Basketball Camp in Starkville last month.

Former NBA player Travis Outlaw indicted on felony marijuana charge
Former NBA player Travis Outlaw – who played for the Trail Blazers, Clippers, Nets and Kings then fell out of the league in 2014 – is facing legal trouble.

Carl Smith of The Dispatch:

“Former professional basketball player Travis Outlaw was arrested Tuesday after a grand jury indicted him on a felony marijuana charge.

The indictment, issued July 15, states the Starkville native possessed an amount of the drug greater than 250 grams but less than 1 kilogram on July 23, 2015.

Outlaw was arrested and booked at the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department for possession of a controlled substance. He was released that same day after posting a $10,000 bond.”

That’s a felony?

Word to the wise: If Outlaw gets out of this mess he needs to get out of Mississippi asap and never look back.

Who orders weed (or any drug) in the mail?

It reminds me of the Mitch Mustain thing.

If receiving weed in the mail is outlawed, only Outlaws will receive weed in the mail.

I seriously doubt this was "prescription". He was caught with over 250 grams which is almost 9 ounces. That amount doesn't sound like intent to distribute to me but more like what you'd get for a big party.

The fact that we are still arresting and jailing people over marijuana in this country is freaking pathetic.

isnt that a common responsibility of your entourage? Have one of your boys grab the weed for you. If they somehow get busted with it they stay quiet and become the fall guy. Dont have it mailed right to your house!

To add to the humor, Corie Blount also had weed shipped to an address not his own (probably a recently vacant house or the like) and the cops were waiting on the recipient to pick it up.

There was a dude on the Suns in the early 80s named John High. I dunno if he ever got busted tho.

Too much money to be made from enforcement and punishment. The people have already moved on, I guess the government will have to face the new reality kicking and screaming.

Yeah. No surprise the DEA chose not to reclassify it from a Schedule 1 narcotic. How would they justify their $2 billion/yr budget fighting a war no one cares about?
