Sadly I was more surprised by him being on the Pistons coaching staff than being charged with drunk driving

Former NBA All-Star and Pistons assistant coach Tim Hardaway is facing drunk-driving charges.
Jermont Terry and Derick Hutchinson of ClickonDetroit:
Court records show his blood alcohol content was .17.
These court records obtained only by Local 4 reveal back in April, Hardway was stopped and charged with “operating with high blood alcohol content.”
Hardaway is fighting the charges but until then, his driving privileges are limited. Records show he “can travel for business purpose only” and is required to use “Soberlink with testing twice a day,” in which a camera records if he’s sober.
Hardaway was a finalist for the Basketball Hall of Fame last year. |

Pistons assistant coach and former Heat/Warriors star Tim Hardaway was charged with drunken driving for an April incident.
John Wisely of the Detroit Free Press:
“Detroit Pistons assistant coach Tim Hardaway faces up to six months in jail after pleading no contest Thursday to violating Michigan’s so-called “super-drunk” driving law.”
“Hardaway refused a breath test, so officers obtained a search warrant to draw a blood sample. It showed Hardaway’s blood-alcohol content to be 0.17%, more than double the legal limit, and enough to trigger the super-drunk provision of the law, which includes tougher penalties.
“The man is 50 years old and never been in trouble in his life,” Ribitwer said. “It was an aberration, and he took responsibility for it.””
Expect the NBA to impose a suspension. If Hardaway finds a way to and from The Palace, he’ll serve it with the Pistons. |

Quote: | NBA suspends Pistons assistant Tim Hardaway three games
Pistons assistant coach Tim Hardaway pleaded no contest to Michigan’s “super-drunk-driving” law.
So, you knew this was coming…
NBA release:
Detroit Pistons’ assistant coach Tim Hardaway has been suspended for three games for pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated with an excessive blood alcohol level, in violation of the law of the State of Michigan, the NBA announced today.
Hardaway will be suspended for the first three games of the 2016-17 NBA regular season.
Players and coaches typically receive a two-game suspension for their first drunk-driving offense, and Hardaway has no other drunk-driving suspension on record. But P.J. Tucker got three games for a “super extreme DUI” in Arizona, and Hardaway violated a similar law. That appears to explain the third game here.
Take a step back, and it seems strange the NBA is basing its suspension policy on differing state laws. After all, the league still punishes players who are caught using marijuana in states where it’s legal. Would someone with the same blood-alcohol content as Hardaway who is pulled over in a state with a single DUI threshold receive a two- or three-game suspension?
Alas, this is how the league ruled on Hardaway, and he’ll likely serve all three games without fuss. |
