I hate to say it but he is incredibly lucky. A clot dislodging and ending up in the lungs is typically fatal (pulmonary embolism). At least if he takes care of himself he should be able to live a normal life.

Retire. Please retire. It is not worth it. He's got all those babies at home...it's just not worth the risk.

Not surprised, the Heat would be liable if he were to drop dead in the middle of the court. He just needs to retire and find a career after basketball to fill the void.

Really sorry to hear this for Chris. But I really could not see playing while he still on meds. The six months I was on blood thinner was some of the hardest months of my life and I'm not running around with other very large people on the basketball court.

That's a real bummer. I am bummed for him

Does he still get paid if he retires?

Guaranteed contract so he gets paid either way. They could buy him out but then they would get no cap relief so from a competitive standpoint the team would suffer in its rebuilding. I believe since it would be a medical retirement the Miami Heat get cap relief.

Bosh should retire. I know he loves playing but there's more to life than basketball. Besides, the Heat aren't worth the risk.

Props to the team doctors who don't give in to the pressure of clearing him to play.

Yep. Insurance would cover a medical retirement.

There are things more important than basketball in life.
Retire and go take care of yourself and your family, Bosh.

I hope that this news signals to Bosh both that pro sports for him is over, and that desire for future participation in most forms of real athletic activity equates to something akin to a death wish.

Pretty unique cap situation with Bosh.
Please correct me if I'm wrong Bard, DB or the other cap experts.
But if MIA waives Bosh (soonest possible time to do so is 2nd week of February) and another team besides the heat signs and plays bosh the rest of the season, Bosh's salary would count against Miami's cap.

If they waive him and nobody signs and plays him. I'm sure Miami has an insurance policy that will pay Bosh and it won't count against their cap.

From what I read, the medical retirement is best for Miami because of the cap situation. Any other options like a buyout or Bosh resuming his career for another team would be bad for their team. So yes it does benefit the Miami Heat if he goes out with a medical retirement. I guess with the team as its currently built Bosh wouldn't really benefit them much and they could go on the business of rebuilding faster if he were to medically retire.

I believe if he signs elsewhere and plays 20 games his salary is back on the Heat's cap.

I just saw on Instagram that Riley announced Bosh would not be back with the Heat. Then Bosh said he had only heard to through the media and didn't get a call or text from Riley. This has officially gotten ugly.

Bosh still wants to/thinks he can play. I wonder who'd be crazy enough to trade for him. Houston? Atlanta? Cleveland? San Antonio?

Does he have to play? It'd be funny if just did that and never set foot on the floor just to stick it to Riles.

Just saw the video of Bosh finding out that Pat Riley said Bosh's Heat career is over. I definitely feel bad for him. He does not seem ready to let his playing days be over.

The secondary audio of Bosh's latest video: "If you think you're going to turn my medical issue into cap space, think again."

They might just have to go the buyout route.

Riley's handling of the situation is disappointing on a human level ...

I get the pure business standpoint driving his stance, and nobody should ever misunderstand what a calculating mother-(bleep) Riles is, but I also think the cutthroat way he's handling Bosh's medical condition may affect the free agency prospects for the Heat for years to come. Buenvenidos a Miami ...

Meanwhile, remember when some people were prancing around here crowing re: how Miami was going to be just fine without LeBron, probably even better for his having left (you know, because he obviously makes teammates play worse)? Uh, 20 - 25 wins incoming ...

After seeing Riley do Wade dirty, Bosh owes the Heat nothing. With Riley putting out in the press that his career is over, I think he is talking to his agent about what to do next.
