What are your feelings on retiring Pau's jersey?
This is a no-brainer! The Spaniard deserves it.

Nope to both. Which makes me sad. Wonder who came closer to get their jersey in the rafters?

Fisher has more chips. But Odom was a HUGE part of our playoff runs '08-'11.

He didn't play for the Lakers long enough to have his jersey retired by them. That's insane. In fact I doubt any team will retire his jersey. He's played on too many of them. He was a good player that bounced around.

Would the Celtics retire Garnett's number? Or Ray Allen? Absolutely not. Lakers don't need to lower their standards either.

If you are only going to value a couple titles, then retire Horry and Byron too.

I figure the Grizzlies and Lakers are the two franchises that outta retire Pau's jerseys. 7 years with one. 6 with the other. That's his basketball prime right there.

6 years is enough time to leave a mark. Especially if it resulted in championships. I won't forget him outplaying Dwight for the first. Or taking it to the Celtics in the second. And if the refs hadn't let BOS get away with murder on him the first time (and a healthy Bynum), we might have had another 3 peat. Oh well, made the rematch all the sweeter. Last laugh, (bleep)!

Pau's arrival marked a return to greatness for the Lakers. As many have stated here, the buzz was palpable. A nice piece by Mo Mo:

I hope there's a place in the front office where key role players are recognized. Plaques on a wall or something for the Scotts, Coopers, Odoms, Horrys, Foxs, Fishers, even Nick the Quicks.

Possibly if either gets in the Hall of Fame. Which won't happen.

No, and I just got done in a different thread suggesting how much I love the guy. But our rafters are not for run of the mill hall of famers. It's the best of the best. Worthy deserved it and Scott did not. Pau was a great player for us, and definitely a HoFer but no, not quite up there

If we do, I would support it anyway bc he's a great human being and player and it's more a 51% no 49% yes sort of thing for me.

But look as this garbled paste from Wiki - he's not in this group, cmon. Closest is Worthy but Worthy was huge for us repeatedly, and Pau was pretty great for a couple years in the clutch. Let's keep this for the best of the best IMO.

In my opinion, from that list, you either need to omit Goodrich and Wilkes and claim Gasol is unworthy, or you need to let Pau in if he makes the HoF - which I'd argue he will.

Pau should and probably will be in HOF.

But the Lakers rafters are something else. I think he blew it when he left.
I'd rather have Fish-s shirt hanging there.

He's got two a's in his name and nickname was Silk. Hence, greatness. No rafter Pau my buddy. End of discussion!

Yes.

Without him, the Lakers have 14 championships instead of 16.

I know. Who could ever forgive Pau for yelling "pay me" during a game at the owner sitting courtside, ultimately forcing a trade? That kind of player should never have his jersey retired.

Love D-Fish but no one should ever entertain the idea of his jersey hanging in the ceiling. Was he ever even the 3rd best player on our title teams?

No Pau. No 2 rings. People need to think back to how well Dwight gelled with Kobe and appreciate the Spaniard even more.

Exactly how I feel.

For instance, I love Jamaal Wilkes but I don't think his number should have been put on the wall. Same with Goodrich in my opinion.

That is not even a question. In fact, Marc has had a better tenure in Memphis than Pau. Gasol was not even considered an elite player in Memphis. Honestly, the only person in the media who compared Pau to Dirk was Charles Barkley before the 2007 first round. His comparison was laughed at by the TNT panel and he was the butt of every joke when Pau was continually outplayed by Dirk, despite his team having the lead heading into the fourth quarter. Dirk was so much better that it was laughable. Pau's contemporaries were Jermaine O'Neal and Zach Randolph... not Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Dirk Nowitzki. It was not until Pau joined Kobe Bryant that he was elevated into a conversation with the other three (when they were past their prime.)

That is what made players like Magic and Kobe special. They made Worthy and Gasol into Hall of Famers. (Bird too .)

Here's a question:

Does Memphis retire Pau's jersey?

He played 6.5 seasons w/ Memphis and 6.5 seasons w/ LAL

Anyway, no one should get there before Kobe.

Pau's can come after Kobe's. But i also wouldn't be upset if Pau's jersey is not retired at all. A great player, but not a clean Laker career for sure.
