Quote:
Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident in Florida early Sunday morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach. Fernandez was 24 years old.

The Marlins announced that Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time," the team said in a statement.

What makes it sadder is that he's expecting his first child.

I had just visited ESPN and saw the news. Then I read the post about him expecting a child. Beyond sad. My condolences go out to family.

Arm health permitting, he was set to be one of the best pitchers in baseball for years. My sympathies to his family over their loss.

As a Dodger fan, this brings back terrible memories. We lost some former players back in the day from tragic boating accidents as well.

Damn. RIP. Watching Mattingly describe Jose as a joyful child was gut wrenching.

This is a horrible and devastating story - good guy, just starting a family.

The thing that makes it more crushing is the fact that it was so preventable. As a long time boater, the idea of driving a boat like that at full throttle in the dark of night is extremely unwise even out in open water - doing so close to shore like that was extremely foolish - compounded by the fact that it doesn't sound like drugs or alcohol lead to it.

While I now need a starter on my pay league in a close race, I will not drop Jose from my team.

We lost a hall of fame talent. The guy could really pitch, and hit as well. A very likable guy from all accounts. Really sad story.

This is a loss that can set back a franchise years......not many players with his potential come up thru an organization. The repercussions will be felt for years for the Marlins if they intend to hang onto players with which they can build a contender.

Really sorry to hear this news, by all accounts a great young man and an amazing pitcher.

Did he ever lose a home game in Miami? The guy was nails on the mound and overcame a lot to get to that point. RIP Jose....

Jose Fernandez was intoxicated, had cocaine in system night he died

Toxicology reports reveal late Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was intoxicated and had cocaine in his system the night of his death.

Fernandez, who died at age 24 after a late-night boat crash in Miami, had a blood alcohol concentration of .147 (nearly double the legal limit) and traces of cocaine in his blood at the time of his death according to the report released by police on Saturday.

Reports earlier this week suggested Fernandez and his two friends, Emilio Jesus Macias and Eduardo Rivera, had a “strong alcohol odor” after the crash. The trio died on Sept. 25 when Fernandez’s boat crashed into the Government Cut north jetty before dawn. It remains unknown who was piloting the boat at the time of the accident.

Fernandez was seen at American Social Bar & Kitchen before the crash, and a receipt for alcohol at the bar was found in the pocket of one of the men. Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna said that Fernandez invited him to join him on the boat that night, but he declined.

It remains unclear if any charges could be brought in the case as boating homicide while intoxicated and vessel homicide are under investigation. The crash is also being investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation.
