Liked the talk from JC about his defense and working on 'angles' yesterday.

They also made mention to the fact Julius has been doing 'defensive slide' drills. I'm guessing the rest of them have as well.

Pretty incredible how incompetent the Parking Brake was...not even working/teaching fundamental stuff.

Sure. But now he's what, the 3rd highest paid player on the team? This stuff matters to NBA players (ask John Wall how he feels about Bradley Beal's extension). I'm hoping JC will correct things like defense. He's no longer a less than 1m a year player so the team will look for him to be a steady influence now.

He is already a steady influence. Now he is one of the leaders of the team, getting paid what he deserves.

I don't think he's a "leader" type personality. I think DLO/Jules are more of that alpha personality.

Lol I wasn't talking about his personality. He is one of the leaders of the team, getting paid like one 🙄

Yeah. The other comparable example was Chandler Parsons, and after he went from just under 1m to 15-16m, people started looking at him differently.

I think JC will continue being a steady and productive player who is a good teammate. Every team needs that.

Where's Dave20 been? His boy JC has been looking impressive so far in training camp. With some defense he looks ready to take that next step in become an effective 2-way guard.

Yep, and the fundamentals are the most important.

Without suicide drills how will our players ever learn the fundamentals of barfing into a trash bin?

Suicide drills were instrumental to the death of our team last year.

Jordan Clarkson embraces Luke Walton's challenge to become a good defender

Quote:
Clarkson has embraced the challenge Lakers coach Luke Walton has outlined for him to become “a very good defender.”

“I was just terrible on that end, taking wrong angles, wasn’t there on tags and wasn’t there on late closeouts,” Clarkson said. “It got to the point where it was bad. We were a bad defensive team as a whole last year. But I take it upon myself really to improve on that.”

The difference between JC being a legit starter on a championship team or a 6th man on a championship team will be his defense.

I look forward to seeing it progress.

OC Register, in the above linked article, wrote:
It might be too ambitious to expect the Lakers to improve significantly on defense after finishing 26th out of 30 NBA teams last season in points allowed (106.9). But Walton has spent the first two days of training camp focused on that area.

During that time, Walton called Clarkson “one of our best” defenders because of his aggressiveness and willingness to fight through screens. Clarkson also praised Walton for showing him film that showed him making some unspecified defensive mistakes during Tuesday’s practice session.

“He’s just been on me and helping me build confidence in myself,” Clarkson said. “He’s teaching me and staying on me about everything defensively.”

Excited to see if it translates to the games in the preseason. All reports are saying he's making progress on that end.

I love his accountability. No excuses; he just admits he was terrible. Can't even blame him for being terrible given his lack of real coaching.

Yeah, this is encouraging to hear. Let's do this, JC!

Yet there were some who were claiming he was decent. Even JC himself knew he had to step up on the defensive end. I'm truly looking forward to him owning it on both ends of the floor this year. I don't think he'll be our best defensive guard but I am eager to see the improvement.

If JC and dlo can become average level NBA defenders we would be on a great path since Ingram and deng will be plus defenders.
