No Debating the Improvement… It’s a work in progress, but you see progress and improvement – not just with the team game that Luke is instilling, but with our youth, as well.

Sure there are some foul issues and some rebounding issues, but the Lakers are playing to their strengths in the past two games and getting better.

The Lakers got off to the good start Luke wanted, winning the first quarter 32-23, but they still gave up 24 FTs to the Nuggets in the first half and were tied up heading into the third.

The fouls started to pile up more in the third, with loose ball fouls on the offensive end turning into instant FTs for the Nuggets at the other end of the court. The Lakers struggled to secure the boards, and the Nuggets started to get some separation. The second unit held their ground, and the score was even heading into the fourth.

Then Lou Williams caught fire, throttling the Nuggets with 15-straight points. Russell finished them off for good with two more threes on his way to a game-high 33 points.

“Everybody on this team is capable of having that night as far as dominating the game with their scoring, rebounding or whatever it is,” Russell said afterward. The two Laker starting guards were an effective one-two punch offensively tonight. When Russell was scoring, Williams was passing and vice versa. The duo helped propel the team to a high-scoring 124-115 win. A much different preseason this year for Russell in multiple ways.

“Tonight, he had it going with his shot,” Luke said of Russell. “Whenever he’s having that kind of night, I’m going to encourage him to stay that aggressive.”

Russell -- -- “I got a chip on my shoulder,” Russell said, referring to his on-and-off the court issues last year. I love when his critics and doubters are vocal. He hears all that and has that arrogance (like Kobe) that he’s going to do whatever it takes to prove them wrong. That’s what makes great ones. Hopefully, that fire burns strong all his career and he continues to get better. Russell was off to a strong start in this one with 16 first quarter points, attacking the Nuggets D in a variety of ways (floaters, midrange, threes, post-ups) on his way to 20 points in the first half. You realize how young he is, right? With all those tools already? He’s just going to get better. After the big scoring, he came in midway through the fourth and kept the Laker hot hands rolling by easing up on his own looks and finding teammates. Then he closed the deal with a couple of threes. Excellent job in that scoring PG mode that reminds you (a little) of Curry in the past couple with how we are using him. He dominated Mudiay for what it’s worth. The Stats: He scored 33 points on 13-19 shooting (4-7 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He threw a pass away on the break, getting caught in the air. He posted up and missed the turnaround. He hit a floater in the lane working off the split play. He attacked off a scramble and banked in a jumper over a big. Pressure backcourt D and he forced a turnover on inbounds out of a timeout. Way short on a wing three after losing his man, but next time down he drained the three in transition. He posted up Murray and drew FTs, he made both. He drained a three in transition when Clarkson found him. He swished a sideline pull-up jumper. He swished a step-back sideline jumper. He missed a three in early offense. He missed a corner three in early offense. He pulled up, pumped and missed the 18-footer trying to create with a low shotclock. He swished the jumper behind the screen, standing on the three line. He swished a pull-up wing jumper off the high screen. He had 20 points on 8-13 shooting. Second Half: He worked off the Zubac screen, saw his big was covered, attacked and drew the foul on the reach, he made one FT. Hockey assist on the two-man game with Randle that led to the Zubac dunk. He got a little space in the corner and hit the pull-up jumper. He swished the elbow jumper working off the high screen. He got his man on his hip, working off the screen and scooped in the layup. He missed a pull-up jumper. Bogus foul on a great reach from behind. He zipped a pass to Young off the screen for a three. He swished a three behind a screen when his man went under. He ran clock down, got a switch and swished the quick-fire three over him.

Randle -- -- A little foul prone ball again in this one, but he was scoring and moving the ball well. Really, with 16 points, and keeping the offense in flow…that’s some good work. Last year, that might have been a lot of iso and ball stopping early on. (He got much better at moving the ball, people forget, later in the season). The rebounding and foul trouble was something Luke mentioned after the game. Denver was not letting up on the boards. “We were undersized for different stretches of that game,” Luke said. “It’s a thing where you got five guys in there. You’ve got to have guards cracking back on bigs and bigs have to go up and get the ball.” A couple less fouls and few more boards and you’ve got more of that well-rounded game you want from him. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-13 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He dunked off the two-man game with Lou for the Lakers first score. He missed an open wing jumper. He faced up from the left sideline, attacked left across the lane and scored a layup. He attacked off the Russell steal and drew FTs, he missed both. He was smothered trying to finish strong. He posted up and banked in the turnaround over his man. He lost the ball on the perimeter it led to a dunk the other way. He missed a 15-footer after the offense stalled. He faced up his man, attacked left across the lane and banked over the defender. He had 8 points on 4-7 shooting. Second Half: He ate up the PG on a switch, forcing him to fall on the drive. He missed a jumper on the other end. He probed into the lane, turned and hit the lefty jumphook bank (good job getting to your sweet spot). Nice extra pass off the two-man game to Zubac for the dunk. He spun on the smaller man in the post and powered in a layup over the help D. Like a runaway bulldozer, he plowed past his man in transition to draw FTs, he made both. Next time down in transition, he hit a tough floater on a drive over a couple of players (bodies on the ground as Randle retreated back down court). He lost the handle on a finish off a slow-developing screen-roll.

Mozgov -- -- He started the first half and Zubac took the second half start. Early on, he had some strong finish attempts at the rim and got one big dunk in the process (looked fouled on the other). Not much impact on both ends, however, while out there. Good to see that pick and roll finally start to develop. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He telegraphed a bounce pass and it was easily picked off. Monster jam over his man off the pick and roll with Lou. Way short on a baseline jumper. He couldn’t finish a dunk, getting undercut with no call. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Williams -- -- Red hot in the fourth. He throttled the Nuggets, scoring 15 straight Laker points during a key stretch. He just caught fire and didn’t let up. Early on, however, he had some excellent passes to teammates. He set the table for Randle to finish on the two-man game and another monster dunk for Mozgov on the roll. He and Russell combined for 58 points…and Swaggy added 14, too. That probably won’t happen with consistency. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 8-15 shooting (4-7 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Nice pocket pass to Randle on the two-man game for the dunk. He missed a pumping fade in the lane, stumbling when the pass came. Good job standing in and taking a charge on transition D to get a stop. He hit Mozgov rolling down the middle of the lane for a monster jam. Next time down he buried a three in transition to force a timeout. He missed a deep three in early offense. He faked, saw an arm reaching, rose up and drew the foul from three, he made all three FTS. He ballwatched and got backdoored for a layup. He missed a baseline jumper. Second Half: He hit the floater on the baseline handoff. He sank an 18-footer straight away. He missed a fade on the wing. He missed a layup in transition. He missed an open wing three off the swing pass. He missed a corner three. He sank a deep three, going to his left. He pushed out the rebound with speed and scored a layup. He attacked right and hit a tough pull-up fade. He sank a catch-and-shoot three next time down. He drew FTs on a hesitation dribble in transition, he made both. He pushed the ball up and sank the pull-up three off the screen.

Young -- -- A lot of minutes. Nick started the game in this one as Deng rested again and Luke looked for a better starting unit. A decent two-way game from him. He had a couple of breakdowns defensively, but he had a spirited effort on that end. The offense was more in the flow and our guards were looking for shooters coming off the screens consistently tonight. “We’re playing as a team, we like each other and we’re trying to win,” Nick said. Hard to say what Nick’s spot is on this team, but Luke wants floor spacers. Ingram isn’t that at the moment, Deng can do it decently, but Nick may be the guy you put in to mix things up and jumpstart the offense when we’re struggling. We’ll see. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He took a handoff and swished a step-back wing three. He swiped a pass and ignited a break. He scooped up a bad pass on one end and missed the three on the other. He missed an open three off the swing pass. He missed a sideline three. Second Half: He sank a long wing jumper on iso. He drained a 17-footer coming off a screen. He attacked to his right, pulled up and hit the 15-footer. He drew FTs boxing out (his lane violation a few second earlier was ridiculously early), he made both FTs. He sank a catch-and-shoot wing three.

Clarkson -- – Steady game from Clarkson. He sank a couple of threes in a row in one stretch and both were a couple of steps behind the line. That shot is looking great from distance. Defensively, a good effort tonight. Not quite as disruptive in the passing lanes as the previous games, although he had some very good rotations and nearly a steal on one of those. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-7 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He hit Russell in transition for the three. He missed a step-back wing jumper at the buzzer. Nice lob pass to Black, who choked the finish. He up-faked, crossed over and scored a layup. Nice effort on a switch to deflect a pass. He pushed it up with 5 seconds left and drew a foul on a three with 3 seconds left, well done, he made two FTs. Second Half: He drained a wing three on his first touch. He sank another deep one on his next attempt. He was blocked on a three coming off a screen. He drew FTs elevating in traffic on the break for FTs, he made both. He hit Calderon for the three. He hit rim on the 60-foot heave at the buzzer. He attacked a crowd and couldn’t finish the tough one. Out of control on a drive, travel (should have taken the three as they sagged off him making the drive more difficult).

Ingram -- -- His length, effort and anticipation is one of those things that is making him a glue guy on the D end. As mentioned, it may take a while for his offense to come along, but he’s bringing something positive to floor every game because of what he does on the defensive end. Some struggles from the FT line, but a good effort attacking to get there. He wasn’t a great FT shooter in college, but should improve. Can’t wait until he gets that shot dropping and gets in on some of these runs offensively. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (2-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 3 blocks and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Great challenge at the rim to save a hoop. He blocked a perimeter jumper. He attacked strong to his right, got to the rim and was hacked for FTs, he missed both. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He smothered his man on iso D and forced a travel in the post. He scooped up a loose ball, pushed it out, was tied up, spun around and spun the layup in. He had the team high +5 in the first half. Second Half: He attacked to his left and was blocked. He faced up, attacked baseline and drew FTs on the finish, he made one. He curled into the paint off the horns play, got contact and drew more FTs, he made one again.

Nance -- -- He missed his open perimeter jumpers in this one. Between Randle and Nance, we need one of them to develop some consistent range on that jumper. Not quite the effective/disruptive game of the first two. We tried setting him up for a lob again in this game, but couldn’t finish that. The Nuggets were defending that much better this game as we had plays in motion with other players where we didn’t get the pass off. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a reverse after gathering a lob. He missed an 18-footer. He fumbled a pass in transition, then fouled. Second Half: He missed an open three. He drew FTs trying to finish strong on the screen-roll, he made both. He missed the open sideline three.

Zubac -- -- Luke hinted at big minutes in this game, but Zubac didn’t come off the bench until late in the first half. The opportunity came when Luke gave him the start in the second half for Mozgov. That was a brief stint and Zubac didn’t have too much of an impact. He was getting pushed around under the hoop a little against the Nugget bigs, but he started mixing it up better. His one score was off a nice Russell/Randle passing sequence for a dunk. He did have a couple of nice challenges, but I’d like to see some more consistent minutes. Luke wanted the W in this game to not let guys get in the habit of losing. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 boards, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He smothered a drive to force a miss. He dunked off the Russell/Randle two-man game. He missed the sky hook going to his right.

Calderon -- Quality game from Calderon. He has a steadying influence out there. You trust him with the ball to make good decisions and when those threes go up. I’ve mentioned this in the offseason, but the trade alone for the picks made this worth it. If the Lakers get consistent, quality play from him like this during the season…you’ve got to like the trade all the way around. He sank a couple of threes tonight and scored on a drive. I thought he looked good defensively and maybe off the bench this year that will happen with more frequency going up against the opponent bench. It’s also helps that we’ve got a lot of length and mobility behind him. He might be poised for a pretty good year with all that going for him. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-4 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: The D sagged off him in early offense and he swished the three. He missed a high arching three quickly off the inbounds. He drew a clear-out foul to get a stop. He probed off the screen and banked in the layup over the help D. Second Half: He set up Nance for FTs on the screen-roll. He drained a quick-fire three on the Clarkson kickout.

Black -- -- He couldn’t finish at the rim a couple of times that looked like he might have had highlight reel dunks. That limited his impact some. We struggled on the boards in this game and it shows in the rebounding numbers. Tarik led the team with 5 boards. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-4 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnover and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He was blocked from behind on a dunk off a great setup by Russell. He got a piece of the ball on a help D reach to force a turnover. He attacked off the dribble, couldn’t power in over a defender, got it back and drew FTs, he made one. He took a pass in the middle of the lane on a 5-on-4 advantage and hammered down the dunk. He choked a lob dunk he should have had. Second Half: He faced up and drew FTs on the drive left, he made both. He blocked a shot at the rim on one end, but was called for an offensive foul on the other to give it back. He hit Ingram on a cut for FTs.

Robinson -- -- He came in for some fourth quarter action with the game still in balance. Unlike previous games, he got to play with more of the core vs. the deep bench. He ended up leading the team with a +13, but I think a lot of that was due to Lou getting hot offensively. He joined the foul-prone ball with 5 fouls in limited time. We were small while he was out there and that came to play with some of that. The Stats: He scored 1 point on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 steals and 5 boards in 9 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He got backed down by a big and had to foul. He tied up a guard on the sideline trap with Russell. He drew FTs on a loose ball, he made one.

Walton -- -- Luke made the first quarter a point of emphasis as they’ve gotten off to slow starts. They’ve allowed an average of 31.5 first quarter points in the first two games. Tonight, he went with Young as the starting SF with Deng still resting… Quick timeout by Luke as we started fouling early on with the Lakers trailing by 3… The Lakers had an 11-8 lead when the Nuggets called a timeout a few minutes later… They stretched it out a 19-11 lead, forcing another timeout… The Lakers were up 19-13 with 4:17 left when Nance, Clarkson and Ingram came in for Young, Randle and Lou… Black in for Mozgov shortly later… Russell out for Calderon with 1:14. Russell had 16 points in the quarter… The Lakers won the first quarter 32-23… He started the same Black, Nance, Ingram, Clarkson, Calderon unit… Lakers were up 12 when Ingram sat for Young… That was followed by Mozgov and Randle returning… Lou in for Clarkson… The lead was cut to 6 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Russell in for Calderon out of that timeout… A 17-7 Nugget run and the Lakers led by just 1… Randle, Mozgov, Williams and Young out for the Zubac, Nance, Ingram, Clarkson, Russell youngster lineup… The Lakers lost the second quarter 30-21… It was tied up 53-53 at the half… Zubac started the second half for Mozgov… He brought in Nance and Ingram for Young and Randle midway through the quarter, Lakers up 1… Black and Clarkson in for Zubac and Lou… Lakers down 1 when Calderon came in for Russell… The Nuggets got some separation, but the Lakers reeled them back in… It was tied 85-85 heading into the fourth… Black, Nance, Ingram, Clarkson, Calderon to start the quarter… Luke quickly sat Nance for Young, sliding Ingram to PF… Down 4, he brought in Williams, Randle and Robinson for Clarkson, Black and Ingram… Russell back in for Calderon with 5+ minutes left, Lakers down 2… Lou caught fire, scoring 15 straight Laker points as part of a 12-0 Laker run that gave them a 10-point lead with over 3 minutes left…

Thanks DB!

You think Ingram will eventually get going offensively? I have a feeling he's gonna be aggressive once the season starts.

Excellent write up once again DB

Eventually, but it took him a while in the summer league, as well. The game will slow down for him, the confidence will pick up. Even if he struggles all year offensively, I wouldn't worry. The kid is so young and that combination of length and mobility will be hard to defend.

Agreed. If he plays elite defense with minimum offense the great D alone will make us significantly better.

Agreed about Calderon. Just the vet we need to stabilize our young guys. Liked his effort on D too. Along w/ the picks in the trade, can't ask for much more realistically.

Thanks DB! - SO many Laker players capable of stepping up!

I liked what I saw from Williams tonight, DLO just torched them, Randle is starting to look like he really is learning, which is a big plus, and we all know what Clarkson is capable of doing.

Looking forward to the next game!!

Thanks, DB. Great analysis.

These Lakers have a lot of firepower. Defence will be the key to winning, though.

Ingram will be fine, he just need to get up to NBA speed. I love his defense though and he's being smart. Not trying to force it or trying to do too much. He knows it's coming.

Thanks DB! Awesome as usual!

People were saying Luke was not going to do as well as he did in Golden State due to the lack of shooters on the Lakers but with DLo, Lou, Clarkson, Swaggy and Calderon it was like another version of GS last night. Lets see if we can keep it consistent that way.

I know what Randle's stat line was but it did not seem like he was making that big of an impact these last two games. He has a lot of difficulty on the defensive end against players that are taller than him and fouls them at an alarming rate. Lack of boxing out and rebounding by Randle contributed to a lot of Nugget second chances. I was not impressed.

If Nick Young keeps playing Defense, I think he should start. Then move Randle to the bench. If this team plays consistently, then with this rotation suggestion below, then we'll compete for a chip this season. Keeping Randle starting too is okay though but I'm looking at the defense and spacing balance on both lineups.

Russell
Lou
Young
Deng
Mosgov

Calderon
Clarkson
Ingram
Randle
Nance

Let Black get some minutes too, especially if Mosgov is in foul trouble
