|
|
As everyone knows, the Los Angeles Lakers will convey their 2017 NBA Draft pick to the Philadelphia 76ers if it falls outside of the top three selections as part of the Steve Nash trade. If the team's first round pick conveys next summer, the Lakers will have a high second round selection. If the Lakers pick does fall within the first three selections and is retained, the Lakers 2018 pick becomes unprotected for the 76ers, while the 2019 pick owed Orlando becomes becomes two unprotected second round picks - in 2017 and 2018.
So either way, the Lakers will have interest in the top of the first and second rounds of the 2017 NBA Draft. With that in mind, I thought I'd start off a 2017 Lakers draft discussion with this preseason draft big board from Cap Strategist:
Quote: | 2.Markelle Fultz
6’4″ 185 (6’10” Wingspan)
Age: 18 (5/29/1998)
NBA Position Range: Category 4 Lead Guard: Two-Way Skilled + Shooting Threat -> Category 1 Lead Guard: Generational Two-Way Scheme-Changer
Fultz is the embodiment of everything you want in a modern NBA lead guard, and he has a chance to be an all-time good one. He has an original, jitterbug like pace with the ball, changing speeds and directions effortlessly with tremendous shake, rendering him one of the trickier perimeter covers. He’s a threat at any moment to go in any direction with the ball, can pull up on a dime in an instant, and blow by you with deceptive athleticism. What makes him truly special is he can do all that while keeping his head up, locating his teammates with exceptional vision and anticipation. Fultz not only finds guys who are open, he sees them before they are. He’s a rare overall combination of positional size, length, above average athleticism, advanced handle and advanced vision. |

There will be some solid second rounders to scout with the expectation that the Lakers will exceed expectations |

I object to Giles being in tier 1 and Ntilikina in tier 2. I agree with him being relatively down on Tatum though. Haven't seen enough of Dennis Smith to have any opinion.
Fultz, Jackson, Ntilikina are my top 3 for now.
2nd rd targets for me (guys who i can see being long term role players): vezenkov, dillon brooks |

Would love to add a top 3 pick to Russell and Ingram. That would hopefully complete the Lakers trio. I'd like them to win a few more games this year, so hopefully there is a little lotto luck. _________________ "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. Giles is solely because of injury? Because he flashes as a bigger Chris Bosh based on the little I've seen him.
I'm also a big fan of Brooks. |

Do we have a second round pick? I doubt we get a first rounder. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

Yes, if the 2017 1st round pick conveys to Philly, then the Lakers keep their 2nd round pick. |

If we are that damn bad that we are in the top 3 odds, then I don't want to think about prospects just yet.
If we think we are in the 8-14 odds range and we beat the odds and end up in the top 3, then I guess I'm okay talking about it. Let's pretend that's what this conversation is about and say this--- there are some damn good prospects this year.
Fultz, Smith Jr, Giles, Jackson. I'd take anyone of those guys. There's also going to be someone (like every year) that shoots up the boards by January (see Towns, D'LO, etc). Opportunities for trades of a star before FA (Cousins, PG, etc).
However... you're going to get a lot of heat for starting a thread this early about being so bad. Personally, I say it's fair to assume either scenario above but just feels too early. |

Yeah I'm skeptical of Giles' knees, and big men with problematic knees are a red flag to me. |

Dennis Smith would be the final piece to this rebuild. He is the next Chris Paul.
Too bad his name doesn't really rhyme well with any tanking slogans though. "Debacle For Dennis" doesn't really have a great ring to it. |

Have to see Luke's rotations tonight before I comment more in this thread.
I'll provide all the input in the world if Lou is starting, cuz you know that's a stealth tank move from Luke. |

i haven't seen much of smith but isn't his calling card his athleticism and above the rim play? that doesn't sound remotely close to chris paul to me. the videos i've seen of him make him look more westbrook/rose than paul. |

I don't think we should count on keeping the pick. If we do somehow keep it, I wouldn't be opposed to trading it. _________________ LeBron, AD, & _________. Stay tuned.

I think he's got qualities of both. More athletic than a young Chris Paul, but probably a better passer than a young (or maybe even present day) Derrick Rose. |
