Growing Pains… This stretch of games over the next few weeks will be a tough challenge for the Lakers. At the very least, we know they will be up for it. Whether that equates into W’s is another story.

With D’Angelo Russell out, the Lakers shuffled their lineup against the visiting Spurs. The starters fell behind early, the Lakers scoring just 16 points in the first quarter. They throttled it up in the second quarter as the bench came to life and Luke dialed in an effective lineup with Deng at PF and Randle at C to close the half and erase a 13-point Spur lead.

The Mozgov and Calderon combo looked too slow-footed once again to start the half and the Laker D suffered. The Spurs made 11-straight shots at one point in the third quarter as they fell back by double digits again. They gave up 39 points in that third quarter with the Spurs making 13-16 shots at one point.

The Lakers chipped away at the lead, sinking back-to-back threes late in the fourth to cut the lead to 5. They would trim it to 4 in the final minute but get no closer, eventually falling 116-107.

“I was proud of the way we fought, but it wasn’t consistent enough,” Luke said. There will be plenty of growing pains as the team learns that consistency that comes with experience.

The Lakers need to find a way to scratch out a few wins over this next dozen games.

Randle -- -- “They just make you pay for every little mistake,” Randle said. Some of our better lineups, we had him at the C spot. That gave us a lot of mobility and speed. Unfortunately, that became a tough challenge against Aldridge and the Spurs length. You can see how key Randle is to this team with Russell out. He makes things happen, pushes the tempo with insane speed that sucked the D into the paint or had it on its heels as he got to the rim. He’s understanding his role offensively and learning how to make an impact. Defense, is still a work in progress. He had a couple lapses in attention that Luke has been critical of, but also had to deal with the length of the Spurs, which was tough. I thought he did well when he and Leonard matched up. Still, lots of progress this year on both ends. Luke mentioned he wanted Randle to be more consistent in doing his work early on defense, getting guys out of sweet spots closer to the hoop. You could really see how much of a problem Randle can become for opponents as his game matures. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-13 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 7 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He missed a turnaround in the lane. He attacked and missed an off-balance runner, not a good look. He sank a 16-footer for the Lakers first score. He setup Nick off the DHO for an And-1 three. He got caught in the air and threw it away in early offense. Not close on a runner after a Euro step. He attacked the paint and was blocked. He kicked to Deng for the corner three. He took a pass from Nance in the backcourt, stepped on the gas and took it for a layup (the D was on their heels badly with all that speed coming into the offensive zone). Great read jumping a passing lane, but he stepped out of bounds trying to save it. He set up Deng in early offense on the handoff for a three. He posted up Leonard and missed the short one, but Deng cleaned it up. He forced Leonard into a bad pass on the drive. He had 4 points on 2-7 shooting, 3 boards and 4 assists. Second Half: He attacked, spun and hit the one-hander in the lane. He pushed the rebound up with speed, forcing the perimeter defense to collapse before kicking it out to Nick for the wing three. He fell asleep on D on the other end and gave up a three. He sank an open 18-footer, open all day for him. He missed a three from the top of the arc. He ran over Manu on a dribble handoff. He attacked the paint and hit the short one. He attacked in early offense and couldn’t finish the layup. He dunked off the screen-roll out of the timeout. Same play, this time he handed it off to Clarkson for the three. He attacked Pau in transition, got all the way under the hoop and drew a foul with 1:23 left down 5, he made just one FT, however.

Mozgov -- He and Calderon were a bad duo defensively. Just not mobile enough and that got the Lakers in trouble to start the halves. He had the team worst -15 in just 14 minutes. He missed some easy ones tonight he usually makes, so he didn’t get anything back on the offensive end. Good job on the offensive glass, but that’s about it. We missed some of that chemistry he and Russell had been developing. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He fumbled a pass then missed the baseline jumper. He tapped out a missed shot to regain possession. Second Half: He missed a good look at a lefty jumphook he is usually automatic on. He traveled in the post. He choked a layup, uggh.

Young -- -- “We had to kick him out of practice yesterday because we didn’t want him infecting the rest of the guys,” Luke said of Nick’s sickness. He was sick on the court, dropping 22 points, making four threes in the process. Some nice drives as well as passes in this one. He missed his first FT since March. This is some of the better, more well-rounded ball he’s played in his career. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-12 shooting (4-7 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 block and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a corner three. He stepped on the sideline pushing off. He missed a three on iso after getting a switch. He sank an And-1 three off the Randle handoff, he made the FT. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made one. He swished a 16-footer straight away over Parker. Nice help D on Pau and I think he blocked his shot off the basket. He changed speeds on the dribble, blew past his man at the wing and scored the layup. He swished a wing three in transition. He attacked down the middle of the lane with speed and scored the layup. He had 14 points on 5-7 shooting, 3 boards and 1 block. Second Half: He missed a fading baseline jumper. He swished a quick three on the great push up court by Randle to suck the D into the paint. He curled into the paint and drew FTs on a reach, he made both. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He attacked a crowd, turnover, three the other way. He swished a much-needed three in transition. He attacked and kicked to Clarkson for a three. He missed a big three out of a timeout that could have cut it to one possession.

Deng -- -- One of his better games of the season, sinking a couple of threes and getting a couple more hoops. After coming up short on the first shot like he has been all season, he started to look more like himself. Great first half with 10 points. Unfortunately, he didn’t scratch in the second half. “First half felt great,” Deng said. If they can get him to play two halves of ball like that with consistency they’re in business. Will it happen? He had a pulse tonight. They did play him at lot at PF, which I’d like to see, but I don’t think that was the reason he was better. His shot just looked better as was his decision making. He led the team in minutes. Wonder if he’ll pick up another notch against the Bulls. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 3 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Short on a wing jumper to start the game. He swished a pull-up jumper in transition. He missed a wing pull-up. He sank a corner three off the Randle kickout. He sank a wing three in transition off the handoff from Randle. He missed a three, short, on a step-back attempt next time down. He crashed the glass and cleaned up the Randle miss with a putback. He had 10 points on 4-7 shooting and 5 boards. Second Half: He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He missed a wing three. He missed a layup out of a timeout.

Calderon -- -- With Russell day to day with the sore knee, Calderon got the start. Luke wanted to keep his elite bench lineup intact, which is why he didn’t start Clarkson or Lou instead. “That’s why we did it,” Luke said. Playing one of Calderon or Huertas has mostly been the kiss of death for the team. That was certainly the result while Calderon was out there. He was a -12. Russell has length on D that helps make up for a step or two. Calderon didn’t bring much on that end of the floor. He didn’t look like he had a lot of chemistry with the starters, which is hard to establish given his lack of playing time. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He missed a jumper off one foot. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He sank a wing three, getting knocked down with no call. He swished a wing jumper. He gave up an And-1 to Parker on a poor close out.

Clarkson -- -- “I feel like give us another run at them…we’re going to get after it,” Clarkson said. Feisty effort with both of our bench guards scoring 20 points. (How sweet is that, by the way?) Clarkson drained the three ball with consistency. He turned the corner on the dribble and got to the rim for scores. He still needs to be careful with the turnovers. I thought he had a bad, unforced one with 8 minutes left when we were starting to mount a rally. Once the team clears those up, it will make a massive difference in their defense. They had a turnover-less second quarter and 13 on the game, so hopefully they keep that up. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-15 shooting (3-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He probed the lane and kicked to Lou for the three. He got tapped on a runner. He attacked and threw it away for transition points the other way. He was blocked on a corner jumper. He missed a wing pull-up on iso. He dunked on the break off the Lou steal. Too tight on the D against Manu who just blew past him for a layup. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He deflected a pass to get a stop. On the other end he probed the lane, curled around the paint and found Nance for the layup. He biffed a rebound, knocking it out of bounds with no one around him. He attacked with speed and was hit on the pass off for FTs, he made both. Second Half: He missed a runner over a couple defenders. He turned the corner on the D and hit the runner going to his right. He missed a scoop on a drive. He changed directions on the dribble behind his back, then changed hands in air to finish the layup with his left. He drained a wing three off a swing pass. Down 8, unforced turnover on the dribble with 8 minutes left. He attacked off the screen and drew contact on the drive for FTs, he made one. He pushed up the break and hit the floater on the 3-on-1. He hit Randle on the screen-roll for the dunk. He sank a three off the handoff from Randle on the same sequence. He couldn’t finish a drive. He sank a three on a kickout from Young.

Williams -- -- I was dying waiting for us to sub out Calderon. Luke probably could have cut Jose’s minutes even shorter, especially when Lou is only going 27 minutes with Russell out. Lou had some nice passing work in the first half to setup his bigs for easy scores. He was uber-efficient with scoring, dropping 24 points on 13 shots. He sank threes, hit runners, slithered past defenders for layups and hit from the midrange. Just his usual steady work. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 9-13 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He swished a three on the kickout from JC. He sank a baseline pull-up jumper. He deflected a pass and instantly outlet to Clarkson for the dunk. He spun to lose his man, then crossed over the bigman badly and hit Black for the dunk. He drew two defenders and hit Black for the dunk. Quick attack in early offense and he scored the layup. He attacked out of a timeout and hit the runner down the lane. He missed a baseline floater. He drew FTs on a runner, he made both. He had 11 points on 4-5 shooting in 12 minutes. Second Half: He was stripped on a drive. He scored a layup turning the corner on the sideline. He coughed up the ball, but then stole it right back, attacked and scored a layup. He missed a corner three, we got it back to him a few seconds later and he hit the fade. Bad position D after his man threw the pass into the post and we gave up a layup. He drained a three on the other end to get it back. He crossed over Parker and scored a layup. He missed a runner expecting to get a whistle. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs with 54 seconds left down 6, he made both. He airballed a three.

Ingram -- -- Ingram struggled to score. Too many off-balance or rushed shots. He had some great first steps to get past defenders, but he couldn’t finish cleanly in the paint. (Loving those drives, he just isn’t quite sure what he’s going to do after he gets past his man.) His only make was when the D sagged off him and he dribbled into an open jumper in rhythm at the top of the key. Luke praised Brandon for staying down against Leonard defensively. Asked if BI could be a Kawhi type of defender, Luke said, “I don’t see why not, if he commits to it.” He said Ingram is a better defender in crunch time, getting low and battling hard. Two guys were a positive in the +/-. Ingram was one of them again. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-9 shooting (0-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Turnover, stepping out of bounds. He got contact to get some separation then airballed the baseline jumper. He missed a tough three trying to get it off before the end of the quarter. He attacked and missed a drive. He missed a three, not able to step into it. He drew an illegal screen call to get a stop. He attacked left, but brought the shot back to his right and was blocked. He ball-faked on the perimeter, attacked and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He played 15 minutes in the half. Second Half: He attacked from the corner, but didn’t use his length well in the paint and missed badly. He attacked to his right and couldn’t finish the layup he should have had. He sank a jumper from the top of the key when the D sagged off him. He missed a three against the shotclock.

Nance -- -- If we could get Nance or Randle to stretch the floor, teams are certainly giving them the space. Teammates just don’t seem to trust it. Quiet game from Nance, with just a layup and a couple FTs. You forget sometimes that he’s still a second-year player and needs to learn his opponent’s tendencies on D. We had Deng running quite a bit at PF in this one to space the floor and deal with the smaller lineups at times. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and no fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed an open FT jumper, got to hit those. He scored a layup on the drive and dish from JC. He couldn’t control a lob and missed. Second Half: He was fouled when he took a pass over the fronting D and tried to dunk, he made both FTs. He was stripped trying to attack.

Black -- -- “The Spurs are good playing off what you give them,” Black said. He wanted the team to defend the paint better, which has been a consistent problem. He got a couple of phantom fouls in this game trying to do just that. So much for home court advantage. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive) and 4 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He dunked off the drive, draw and dish from Lou. He drew FTs and made one. He dunked when Lou pulled two defenders to him off the dribble and found Black. Bogus foul call on a block on Parker. Second Half: Another bogus foul sending Pau to the line for more points. He got tapped on a putback attempt.

Walton -- -- The Spurs got off to a 7-0 start as the Lakers went scoreless the first 3 minutes. Luke called a timeout… Down 5 when Lou and Ingram came in for Deng and Calderon… Clarkson and Nance in, Lakers down 8… Black in for Randle, Lakers down 7 with 3:18 left… The Lakers trailed 26-16 after the first quarter… Lou scoring and setting up teammates for easy makes to start. The Lakers trailed by 9 still when the timeout came from Pop… They cut it to 5 on a couple more hoops on the 8-0 run and Pop called another timeout shortly later… Nick in for Clarkson, Lakers down 11… Randle in for Black, Deng in for Ingram down 9… He went with a Randle, Deng, Ingram, Young, Clarkson lineup… Luke was irate on what he thought was an over-the-back foul that was not called and turned into an And-1… Very active lineup, mobile lineup… They evened things up, helped by some clean ball in the second quarter (no turnovers)… The Lakers were tied 53-53. They had a 9-4 advantage in the turnover category… Both teams made little runs, but the Lakers trailed by 2 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Luke sat Calderon and Mozgov for Nance and Williams, Lakers down 7 with 5 minutes left… Luke called a timeout down 12 shortly later, Lakers not getting stops… Clarkson in for Young… The Spurs made 11 straight shots (Spurs 13-16 shooting at one point)… Full bench unit in now… The Lakers trailed 91-76, giving up 39 points in the third quarter… Deng in at PF… Lakers were in the bonus with 7:22 left… They cut it to 5, but gave up a couple of layups and Luke called a timeout… He brought in Young for Lou and Randle for Nance… Lakers struggling to get stops with Randle against Aldridge… Lou in for Ingram… Back-to-back stops and back-to-back threes by Young and Clarkson cut the lead to 5 with 1:39 left, forcing a timeout… Nance for Deng for a defensive stand… No Russell but 66 points between Nick, JC and Lou tonight…

Thanks DB!

I can take the L. I was entertained start to finish and even thought we had a chance to win midway through the 4th.

I haven't felt this good about a loss in a very long time.

I was shocked that Popovich decides to let the starters play against our second strings at the 8 minute mark in the 2nd quarter, shows you how good our bench are.

The team doesn't quit. Win or lose, they find a way to make 4th Q's interestingly competitive.

If russell has to sit more games then maybe Huertas should play, not Calderon

Lesson: Learning about the needed accountability to win at the highest level

In these critical time of growth, isn't this where Deng (and to a lesser extent - Mosgov) are supposed to be role models and mentors?

Careless TOs at critical times are rookie mistakes that they are learning must be likited

I'd slip JC into the PG slot; both Calderon and Huertas suck at D. At least JC can still learn. Ingram or Lou could bring down the rock for the second unit, no big deal.

Our bigs have to shoot the ball when open.

I liked randle taking them tonight, but Nance has to add this to his game.

Thanks, DB. I have a differing opinion with a few points of your terrific analysis, though. I think the reason our starters fell behind early wasn't due to bad D, but lack of offense. Calderon wasn't providing anything (until the second quarter), and the only one's making consistent shots were Nick, and Deng. Mozgov played good post defense against Aldridge, in the post. He just couldn't make an impact on the offensive end.

Like you said though, the Lakers fought till the end. We even had a slight lead at one point. But, basketball is a game of runs. Unfortunately, the Spurs had more runs, than the Lakers.

Thanks for the recap, and it jives with the first full-game viewing I've done this season.

I felt good about what the Lakers did,. I felt good about what they were trying to do. Our guys were competitive with a really good team, more so even than I'd expected so early in the season. Ahhh, progress.

GO LAKERS

Thanks, DB! I missed the game yesterday so I was confused to see the box score and see Calderon starting

Sounds like a pretty decent moral victory at the least.

Calderon and Huertsas need to be playing with a team that plays great Team D because they don't have the physical talent to recover from mistakes.

Since we are developing our young players, we will have to witness the many lessons they will commit when out of control resulting in unforced TOs.

Deng played better, but as the highest paid veteran on the court - should we expect more? If not, why is he on the roster

I would say it was bad offense in the first quarter and bad defense in the 3rd quarter, though the spurs did hit a number of tough shots.

Games like this make me realize how much I already take Randle for granted. I felt like he had a mediocre game, but he nearly had a triple double. He is definitely getting better at man defense, but he is still having issues with his help rotations, but hopefully those will become second nature with time.

Hopefully Deng can play like he did last night more often, it would make the team even better if he is knocking down his shots and being active

Missed this one, but it seems they had a decent/encouraging showing without DLO.
