Autistic nephew, 9, of ex-Knicks center Marcus Camby found dead on Texas property

The frantic search for the 9-year-old nephew of Marcus Camby ended in tragedy.

The body of the autistic nephew of the ex-Knicks center was found on Saturday morning, local police confirmed.

Police in Pearland, Tex., made the grim discovery in a lake on Camby's property near Houston after searching for Marcus McGhee since Thanksgiving. The non-verbal, autistic boy was first reported missing Thursday when he disappeared from the family's Thanksgiving celebration.

"The Pearland Police Department regrets to inform the community that Marcus McGhee has been found," the suburban Houston department posted via Facebook. "Today's search will be called off. We thank all of you for your efforts. The family is now in need of our prayers."

Lt. Onesimo Lopez told local media that there were no signs of foul play. The department said it would release additional details later.

McGhee has traveled to Texas from his home in Connecticut for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Camby family gathering numbered around 20 people, the Houston Chronicle reported. McGhee, who had been playing with other kids, was found to be missing around 4:15 p.m. and police arrived to join the family in the search a half hour later. The newspaper reported that a security camera picked up McGhee going out a side door.

The boy's body was found in the L-shaped lake behind Camby's home.

Camby, who grew up in Hartford and helped lead UMass to the Final Four in 1996, had two stints with the Knicks. He was traded to the Knicks in 1998 by the Raptors for Sean Marks and Charley Oakleyand played an integral role in the team’s most recent run to the NBA Finals in 1999. After four seasons on Broadway, Camby was involved in a five-player trade with the Denver Nuggets. He eventually returned to the Knicks via trade before the 2012-13 season.

Camby played 221 of his 973 career NBA games with the Knicks. He also spent time with the Trail Blazers, Clippers and Rockets during a 17-year pro career.

UMass' Final Four appearance was later vacated after Camby admitted accepting money, clothes and jewelry from an agent.

Very sad story. Did he wander off and drown in the lake?

The kid needed to be watched each moment. Easier said than done, sure. But lapses for any length of time can result in something like this. It's like watching someone elderly, always staying vigiliant to keep them from falling. Unrealistic to expect 24/7. Unfortunate story.

Former NBA player Marcus Camby sued over nephew's drowning

HOUSTON (AP) — Former NBA player Marcus Camby has been named defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit over the drowning of his 9-year-old autistic nephew in a pond on Camby's Houston-area property last Thanksgiving.

The federal lawsuit, filed Thursday by the boy's father, Marcus Kendall McGhee, alleges that Camby was aware of the limitations of his nephew, Marcus Carter McGhee, but failed to supervise the child and used no protective measures to keep him away from the pond.

The boy was found dead two days after he was reported missing. He'd traveled to Texas from his home in the Hartford, Connecticut, area for the holiday.

Camby's property includes several acres in Pearland, a Houston suburb.

Camby could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. He played 19 NBA seasons for six teams, including the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers. The 2012-13 season was his last.

He's probably being sued so the insurance company has to pick up the tab.
